Gary Hooper

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache

This one does looks like it has substance, Celtic have confirmed what I was told on Wed and Fri. It's a decent bet that Adkins has the players number and knows exactly where he stands. I would think we wouldn't be persuing this if we hadn't had a nod from the player, obviously subject to negotiations.

We played the same game with AOC, no doubt knowing he would be sold, but ensuring we get the best deal for the club in the process. Arsenal really wanted him to stumped up the cash, let's hope we do the same.

I agree with the previous opinion on Lennons press comments though - you can't say our valuation doesn't meet theirs at the same time as saying he isn't for sale. It's one or the other, if somebody has a valuation he is for sale.

I hope so, the most encouraging thing about this potential deal isn't the discussion about the deal itself, but about Celtics potential targets, replacements for Hooper, spending big despite being broke... it all points to the deal being quite likely.

I read somewhere that Lennon said that he would turn down 6 million for Hooper

Probably in the hope we'll bid £7m, or go away. I'm not sure Celtic can afford to turn £6m down, so even if Lennon would, the board / owners might have different ideas.

Celtic fan on a Forum of theirs:

did not sound good there hearing lennon on radio says he was not going to play him today and that everyplayer has his price

Another fan said that Lennon mentioned "that Hooper knows what is happening and that we would need time to replace him".

Amazingly it sounds like this has some serious legs.

Didn't expect this to come to fruition in January at all! Thought it was more of a hopeful bit of interest if anything, but it looks like Celtic have seriously played their hand and named a price.

"Why the **** would he go to Southampton? Seriously? Absolute joke, they should **** off and stop making fools of themselves."

Wow they think highly of the SPL ahaha.

Apparently Hooper is worth 12 million and would never leave them for a tiny club like us. Seriously? I concede Celtic are (or at least were a big club,) but they need to accept the Spl is ****e and the chance of Premier league football could tempt many of their players.

Lennon:

"When we have players like Ki Sung-yueng, Beram Kayal, Emilio Izaguirre, Hooper and James Forrest, they are not going to go cheap, that's for sure.

"They will have to pay proper money."

"I don't need to speak to the board, they know my position," added Lennon.

"Everyone has their price. We are not a selling club but everyone has their price.

"The problem is if we get a knockout price, will we have time to replace someone like Gary Hooper? Trust me, they are hard to find.

"I have spoken to Gary, I am keeping him up to date.

"I think he is very happy here. I think Celtic and Gary suit each other, he is a Celtic type of player, strong, great finisher, great feet and his goal record speaks for itself."

I have said that since the summer, but what about being serious about promotion, do we need some signings to achieve this ?

It's difficult to say we need signings like this, because we're top of the table and managed to win convincingly today without our top goal scorer. But it would be a massive boost, it would improve our chances and just as importantly, it would mean one more position is filled by a player capable of playing in the Prem. If we do get promotion this season, we start next with the core of the squad that got us there, rather than needing to rebuild.

But we're doing well at the moment, so it's hard to feel too desperate about it.

The best time to strengthen is when you're top. If you can improve your side when you're top then you're really onto something and psychologically, it says a lot to our rivals.

Put it this way, when you're 1-0 up you want to score a second goal right? You don't want to consolidate and settle for 1-0 cos there's always that chance of being caught.

Just a thought - but has Hooper already played enough times for Celtic this year to qualify for a champions medal if they win the league this year - even if he joins us in January?

Are you suggesting we might be able to put the SPL Trophy in the St Mary's trophy cabinet if they win it?

Reckon it is worth paying silly money, just so I can read this thread again...

http://www.talkceltic.net/forum/showthread.php?t=117132&page=11

think this is funny

Why would he move back to the championship and play against the likes of Watford, Barnsley etc. when he just played against Udinese and Athletico Madrid?

Even if Celtic accepted the bid Hooper wouldn't move IMO: he wants an England call up and can only do that by scoring at a respectable level (Europa league) which he has.

as they are playing some top teams week in week out!

In the last few weeks they have played some of the giants of world football...

Peterhead in front of 5,000

Dunfermline in front of 10,000

St Johnstone in front of 6,000

Dundee in front of 11,000

Inverness in front of 6,000

Motherwell in front of 10,000

They get very good home crowds, too many derbies about religion and a season of crap away games.

Unless you are scottish there is no appeal or interest in that league (and not much from most of Scotland!)

He obviously went to Celtic to win medals and might not want to leave without having got at least one medal. If he is guaranteed a medal anyway then he is more likely to come in January - IMHO - otherwise he might be tempted to wait until the summer.

'NOTE to Southanpton fans the quality of Championship football has been pish this season, 25 games played and the top team has only won 14 games and out of a possible 75 points has only gained 47...'

I guess old firm fans aren't used to a league where any team can beat anyone in the league on the day......its called competition..

£10million would not be a good deal, sorry. We'd be utter mugs to pay that much.

None of us knows what our transfer budget is, but I'd be really concerned if we spent that much on one player when we have quite a list of first-teamers who may well be quite a way short of Premier League standard.

However, if part of this big picture (who the hell knows?) is selling Rickie to Newcastle for big money, that could change things a bit. Just a thought.

IF he hands in a transfer request then of course that will completely change matters. Lennon will be able to play the 'he wanted to go, so we had to let him, we only want people committed to the cause etc etc' and he saves face.

Wonder if Jos has had a word?

I am genuinely stunned, when this was first mentioned I though 'yeah yeah, media hype' to have its confirmed by Adkins today was astonishing, when we announced we weren't interested in Sharp et al it didn't really occur to me that was because we were looking at options significantly above that level

Norwich are 9th in the Premier League in mid January with many players that were in League One two years ago in their starting line-up. The jump really isn't that great if the team is managed well and recruited well.

True, and Surman has become quite an "engine room" for them over the past couple of months, but the distance between August and November and between January and April seems to be a lot bigger in the Premier. Plenty of recently-promoted teams have fallen away badly after a bright start. That's when their weaknesses have been well and truly spotted and exploited.

I'm trying not to be too hard on our squad but I certainly think it would be a bridge too far for a fair number of them.

I hope I'm wrong but I wouldn't want us to underestimate how much we'll need to spend, which was the point of my comment.

If it takes 10 million it would be worth it for Hooper , Puncheon part ex at £1million makes it a net £9million. I would call that good deal and increase our chances of winning the title by ten fold.

Sorry but I disagree - £10M would be way too much for a striker thats not played in a top flight league (SPL is not top flight IMO) and is still untried against the best.

A £10M player should be a tried and tested player.

£6M + Puncheon would be as far as I'd go.

The plan of actually spending very little.

Saints' spent more in the summer and so far in January than the majority of Championship clubs.

Cork, Hooiveld, De Ridder and Fox did not come cheap, nor did new contracts for a large number of players or the £15k p/w for Tadanari Lee. The outlay on them is significant for a Championship club and also shown to be successful, as the club is top of the league in mid January.

50 goals in 95 games for S****horpe, 38 in 65 for Celtic. That's an awesome record.

Unless we're using the publicity of these bids to hurry along another transfer I reckon there is a chance we can land him. The club will know if he wants to come or not so wouldn't bother bidding if he'd prefer to stay in Scotland.
