We did try, but it was always going to be rebuffed. We need to spend silly silly money to bring him here, as that's all Celtic will listen to. He's very important to them and the player himself is very happy at Celtic.

We'd have to overpay for him which I don't think we'll do.

The article suggests he's not for sale but could be bought for £4.5million in the summer. Why not test their resolve with a bid of that size now?

It would still be rejected. Under no situations, unless we bid around 8-10m, will they sell in January.

That's the problem we have at the mo, with us these days we never ever overpay for a player. We only ever pay or bid what we feel that player is worth, if the club want more we turn away.

In January that will be hard as players are so important to the clubs rest of the season ambitions, so their prices will be inflated. We are trying but if we want this major signing we may need to pay over the odds just once.....not sure NC is the type of guy to do that though! Which is sensible...but sometimes you just need to throw the dice and gamble.

Young, prolific and Celtic are skint he could be just what we are looking for. Of course Celtic fans would go spare if their star striker left a massive club like Celtic for some obscure little Championship side but I'm sure they'd recover.

Won't happen in my view as a)Celtic reluctant to sell, and b)other Prem clubs have previously been linked.

I still think there could be a striker from Europe lined up. No knowledge, just a hunch.

Hooper's relationship with Adkins' must be a factor here, albeit a possibly redundant one as it would take daft money to force Celtic's hand.

Posted
I've never heard of him and honest enough to say so.

Jos has commented on twitter every time he scored, so they obviously get on well. Adkins and Jos as influences in our favour with the player, but celtic seem impenetrable on agreeing a fee.

Is Hooper any good. I've never seen him play.

Since when has a requirement to see a player in action, prevented anyone on this site providing an opinion on how good he is? Alpine provides his opinion on a whole team, regularly, despite rarely seeing them play...

Gary Hooper would be a fantastic signing. He's potentially up a level from Sharp, too.

Like has been said above though, Celtic would only accept silly money. He's their main man.

Quality player though.

This would obviously be a real coup for the club, but I can't see us getting him. Not in January anyhow. Seems more likely that this bid was made to assert both to the player and Celtic that our interest is serious and it might make GH think twice about signing a new contract at the end of the season.

If we are willing to spend a substantial amount this window, as this bid would suggest, then I really think we should go for Rhodes. I hope we were one of the 20 PL and NPC clubs who were there to watch him stick 5 past Wycombe the other day.

He's alright, might be good but the SPL is no level to prove it. Problem is, it'd be an insane fee.

Delighted if he's 3m or so. But bet they want 5+

Being mentioned for an England call-up. The reports says Adkins will go back in the Summer (if we are promoted) but would be wasting his time at less that £4.5Million.

How do know what Hooper is worth.

We got £12m for OXO and he played in League 1

If SFC do not pay what you consider insane fees I doubt they will progress

Mentioned by Celtic fans yes.

I would be surprised if that happens with the level he's playing at. IMO to really impress to england call up stages you should be scoring Larsson amounts in Scotland. Hooper should move (to us) and score in top flight in his wants england caps.

Hooper knows his chances are probably limited playing SPL football, which is why he is likely to move to a Prem club in August. It's easy to criticise but I don't see any of the other players we are being linked to being mentioned for an England call-up and they have all got a big fat zero, when it comes to Prem experience.

This just goes to prove that all this talk about signing Sharp, Rhodes etc. is lower than the caliber of players, who Nicola and Nigel actually think are worth going after.

We're looking at future England internationals, not Leauge 1 strikers. We've signed Jack Cork and is just about to close the deal on a future Japanese international in Tadanari Lee.

good point, but don't confuse players that plat in league 1 for players that are of league 1 standard. Just because we are top of the league shouldn't mean we shouldn't buy players from teams below us in the football pyramid.

Current Japanese international I thought?

Yes but I would rather go for the likes of sharp than the likes of hooper if we are much more likely to secure sharp. We shall see at the end of the window!

Good spot. Looks like a virtually full strength team they've got out as well?

6 changes from the side that beat Dunfermline last week apparently. Don't forget Hooper was subbed quite early on in the 2nd half of that game, might have a knock.

They would be silly to sell him at this stage of the season. Thats why I dont see the point in the January window.

They might not have a choice though - they aren't exactly flush for cash.

Statement of intent though.

Nice.

shows we are looking properly at what we need to 1) Get out of nPc and 2) Stay in the Premiership

Statement of intent....depends on whether we offered them our usual 30 bob or not really doesn't it.

Bet it was nowhere near 4 million, not even 3 million, 30 bob ladies that's all I'm offering...nah put it back in the van Jimmy we ain't got a begging licence..reminds me of the market traders in Portobello Rd.

Just been told that Neil Lennon has told the media (after Celtic's match today) that they have rejected our approach for Hooper.

Not surprising they've rejected - lets see if we go back with a larger offer. I'd like to think we will.

If what you say is true why do we bother making an offer? dont we research our transfers properly?

Does it? He's never played in the Premier League and has never won promotion from the Championship.
