No it isn't representative. Big difference is the influence of the barely educated, rude know it all posters. In the physical world they congregate together and grunt. On here they over extend themselves and try and fail to participate in reasoned debate.

Us normal ones sit back and read, most normal guys have given up posting and just read.

That will do for starters.

Most of the Saints fans I know are completely unaware of this site when I mention it in passing, so in that sense, you could argue that it's not representative.

Statistically, its membership is probably representative. However, most members and registered users post very little, so i would say that the posts are probably NOT representative.

Therefore:

Just looked through some of the threads. Alpine Saint seems to contribute some 50% of all posts on some threads. Could we have a maximum allowed number of posts?

Posted
It would probably be more representative if you could filter out people with more than, say, 10,000 posts.

Quite. Anyone with this number of posts on an internet forum clearly doesn't have much else in their lives, therefore rendering their opinions obsolete. These people post the most, meaning threads are heavily polluted with their tripe.

So to answer the OP, no.

I have a large number of posts and I have a very busy life, been there and done that so to speak all over the world..

I happen to enjoy engaging with this site (most of the time) and having a laugh with people who share a common interest.

I have also met one to two good people from this place..

if that counts to not having much in my life

18 posts per day though... I don't know. Maybe you're right, didn't mean to upset you (as you're not a bad poster on here as it goes).

I guess it just baffles me how anyone can have this many posts on a forum and still have a life. Fair play if you manage it, I'm not sure that many can.

The long and short of it is that statistically when Saints were last in the Prem a survey identified that we had the oldest fan base. There are also statistics which prove that Internet access decreases significantly with age, so there is a huge older majority out there with a wealth of football-supporting experience who are hugely under-represented on online Forums generally and this one in particular.

So if you want the impressions of younger web-savvy Saints supporting people, here we are - the problem is that there's a much higher likelihood that they're knee-jerk, attention-seeking, poorly spelling, no context or frame of reference, inexperienced mongtards. But not everyone is, you're just more likely to find them here than by picking a random St Mary's attendee.

Please define normal.

I don't think this forum is representative of Saints fans in general. Those of us who post on here are, probably, more opinionated than the average fan. The average fan may well have an opinion but would not be so vociferous of it as we are.

18 posts per day...? well, I have done what..? 3 on here..?

3 or 4 on a match thread...

3 or 4 on a transfer thread

3 or 4 in the lounge...?

can do that in half an hour....hardly not having a life

anyway, on that note, I'm off away (having a life again) on operations...maybe post again in a few weeks

I don't think this place is representative at all. Of our group of 8, who are STHs and attend a decent number of away games every season, I think I'm the only one who uses this site. I've met a lot of good people who use this site, but then it has seemed to be the same with groups of fans I've met - a fairly small % of that group post on here.

For me it's just a bit of addiction, I love reading up on Saints (and football in general), and if you look hard enough you can get into some very sensible and well informed debates. And then there's the transfer window threads, but I find it entertaining anyway.

It's in no way representative, some on here don't even go to games, some live abroad and it's a magnet for weirdos.

Most Saints fans I know have never even heard of this site, I can only think of 1 who even looks on here occasionally.

I cant believe that youre a real fan and not know about this forum?

My parents and their neighbours (all ST holders) hardly ever use the internet. Many of the older generation get all their Saints info from the Echo.

Ahh ok maybe i over estimate the usage of the internet? Just assume most peeps use it daily

Most of my mates who go just go to footie for a laugh and a few beers, the internet is mainly used for music, facebook and pornography.

Plenty of them out there that have no clue about this site.

If so, what does it say about our fanbase?

If not, why not?

No, vast majority of supporters wouldn't even know it exists. Views on here tend to be much more extreme than the average Saints supporter, and sadly nowadays there is very little evidence of anyone with insider knowledge and so the forum has become largely a waste of time for those of us who are really only on here to keep in touch with what is going on.

Do you know if that survey was carried out whilst at the Dell or at SMS? My impression was that the Dell was dominated (because of capacity) by older long standing season ticket holders. SMS gave more people a chance to go.

I find that people that post on here / use forums are alot more clued up then those that don't with what's happening at the club etc.

When I talk to people at work / SMS / friends who don't use this site (and that generally means they don't use any saints forums) they don't have a clue about transfers / any incidents / current goings on that that you only find out about on here really, can make convo quite boring and never understand how they can't be more interested.

Luker and I'm sure Oldknow both undertook surveys whilst we were at SMS and the results were that we had a "relatively" older season ticket fanbase than other clubs. Obviously things may change but that was a true 3/4 years back.

Although the Dells capacity definitely restricted "newcomers" I think they also accepted that the cost of tickets was also

putting many off. Of course that therefore might have changed with the offers we have had recently.

And as aintforever says above, many of our fanbase still get their info from the Echo, hence why I'm always pushing for a mutually beneficial relationship between them and the Club.

Quite! I go with 7 other lads, none of whom use this site. They can't quite believe things like when I tell them yesterday that Doble and Lallana were starting upfront and it happens.

This. A friend at work often sends me links to the echo, things I've known about for weeks because they've been on here. I've just taken to pretending I didn't already know it because it makes for more interesting conversation. The Tadanari Lee thing was a perfect example, he sent me that when it was on the official site.

No it isn't....

basic maths last home gate 30,600

regular posters on here 200 ? (generous)

so thats about 0.6% of the last home gate let alone the actual fan base which i would hazard a guess at about 50 K ( those who attend over a course of aseason and don't go to every game )

This site probably represents 0.25% of the actual fan base......not a lot then !!

pap, meet Glasgow.

Uncharacteristically terse for you, sir. What happened? Did your bookcase fall over? Are you trapped under it now, only able to make snide remarks with one hand? :D

I've had that experience myself, even with people who know a lot more about football than I do (almost everyone). That said, much of what is on this site could be termed "educated speculation", so perhaps its better that they haven't heard about our 17th placed finish this year :D

Well funnily enough you can hear most of the same things said in the crowd at SMS (if you don't mind a bit of eves dropping) as you see posted on here. Waiting at the bus stop after the Bristol city game some old guy was proclaiming our season was over and we played the worst he'd seen all season. I speak to saints fans outside of this place that say lots of the same things as on here (both good and bad) who have no knowledge of this place at all.

People are just more noticable here especially if they keep banging the same drum on the same subject (like ticket tax for example) you just can't ignore them the way you can the guy abusing Guly at SMS.

Some actual figures, rather than made-up ones:

3005 users on here are deemed as "active", i.e. have logged in within the last month.

Of that 3005, 1276 have actually posted.

I think one of the problems is that people consider SaintsWeb to be like a supporters group, or collection of fans, when it is effectively just a communication medium and portal.

In general terms (not getting all statistical on you), the larger the group of fans, the more representative it will be, BUT that is the group of fans and NOT the loudest opinions made by that group, because as has been said, some people are significantly louder than others and they do tend to be the more annoying/less informed individuals. Most fans I know with a semblance of common sense and respect for others opinions are more likely to walk away from a thread once it degenerates into the usual crap, and so the quality debate is diluted.

Seeing as this place is full of negative Mongs, I'd suggest not as the vast majority know and appreciate how good it's been lately.

its a bit like the northam or the milton end at the dell then

Thanks for that. Interesting. Normally success, especially playing in the premiership attracts more kids and casuals - so hopefully this season we've started a move towards more younger, future hard core supporters.
