Anyone else noticed? Only takes a few bad results and he starts dissing the tactics. Does it in his usual 'Uncle Dave knows best' mode of course. My God, he makes me sick!

Yes, because no-one is allowed to say something negative about Saints, even if we are currently playing toothless w*nk.

He makes some good points and is in a better position than any of us to make those points. It's what a co-commentators job is.

I would have thought a co-commentators job was to put some positive advice forward. Does he ever suggest tactical alternatives apart from the usual crass comments like, 'What Saints have to do now is not concede a goal!'

Posted
Bloody hell it's a radio commentary. Get over it. He probably s a few good points TBF our tactics haven't been great in the last few games.

Home to Brizzle we were bad. But we beat Palace comfortably and we were on top against Brighton and weren't awarded a perfectly good goal when we went down to 10 men. Not all bad surely?

The BBC conspiracy against Southampton Football Club strikes again.

God help us from the media coverage some of the utter divs on this forum seem to want.

"And in sport, Super dooper super Saints played brilliantly and did nothing wrong in a triumphant two nil defeat at Selhurst Park. Everyone did everything right so well done to the lads and the manager and the chairman, who were all super dooper and brilliant and everything and we must have been cheated out of it or something."

The bad points are always more important than the good ones apparently

Anyone can suggest that so and so should be playing in so and so position in hindsight but I'm pretty sure that our Dave wouldn't know any better than Nigel what to tell them do after that. Have you heard him once today saying how well Nigel Adkins has done so far this season? No, of course you haven't!

God we've got some dic kheads on here.. wtf is the ' uncle dave knows best' ****e ? Dave is one the least arrogant people you could meet and when he does criticise saints, i think he is doing so reluctantly

It's his job to use his years of experience in football to give his honest opinion which he does and always speaks sense imo.

Why on earth should Dave Merrington be expected to preface every single comment with some compliments about Adkins? There's a bloody match going on. And Merrington has been very positive about the team and the manager all season. If you want constant non stop unfettered praise on every broadcast then you seriously need to grow up a bit.

Yes, actually, he has said a few positive things in the pre-match build up. During the game he has given his opinion on how he would have handled this game and who he would have played where. In other words, he commentated.

Perhaps the problem is you, you're clearly only hearing what you want to hear.

Posted
He's talking s**t - width would make no difference.

Yes it would, it would prevent them getting down the flanks and would enable us to get in behind them. Too narrow, all through middle with us at mo.

Posted
Why not? What is your opinion based on?

Its all opinion - but if you think a combination of Doble, Lallana and JWP as the most advanced players would make a difference in the middle, I'd suggest you're having a giraffe.

Just look at Donny. With SDR and Lallana on the wings, we got plenty of crosses in there but Guly and Schneiderlin were toothless. You want width, you need a Lambert upfront or runners ghosting in from midfield. We don't today.

Just IMO of course.

Posted

Agree lack of width of problem has been a problem in the past; but that's when we've had players available who thrive on crosses etc. We don't today.

This is the first time I have heard radio commentary for years and now I finally understand Alpine and the remainder of the suicide squad.

Merrington is like my Dad, much as I love him, I wish he'd shut the f up sometimes when watching football. My Dad used to keep going on and on and on about sides passing sideways. When they corssed it in and scored or played it long and scored, he'd then start going on and on "there you go, Get it forward and they score" . Merrington keeps going on and on about width, now Adkins has changed it, he's going on and on and on about how much better it is. I thought Ray Wilkins was the most annoying co commentor, but Dave's giving him a run for his money today.

All about opinions though.

So right. List for me all the wingers tearing up the Premiership?? And yet it's a travesty we have Holmes on the bench...

And I am a big fan of Lee Holmes but we are not a team that plays it wide and crosses it into the box - truth is we're BETTER than that old game...

Totally agree. If anything, our best form of the season coincided with quite a narrow formation with AL and Guly cutting in - not a simple 4-4-2.

Yes lets have a go at the guy who left his wife when she was seriously to keep us up and brought us le tissier shearer the wallaces and loads more. He bleeds red and white.

..and he's been in the game man and boy for´over 40 years..is it just his Lancashire dialect you can't handle ?

If you think that Geordie accent is "Lancashire dialect" you've been in Sweden too long.

To be fair, so do I and I would make a terrible radio summariser. I don't think anyone has anything against him as a bloke, one of the critics even likened him to his dad!

I've nothing against Dave and I'm well aware of his part in the history of our club. I just dont think he's a very good expert on the radio. It's nothing to do with who people play for or how much they love the club, one of the best about is Steve Claridge IMO, and he's a Skate. What gets on my wick is him banging on and on about width and the shape, and then the other bloke parroting his words and seemingly encouraging him to constantly repeat them. They also annoy me when they waffle on over and over about players being left out, it was Forte and Holmes today, the other day it was Barnard. I manage to get to most matches, so dont have to liten to them that much, but if I had to listen every week, I think I'd go mental...........

He knows more than you and you make me sick:lol:

I've no problems with Merrington as a commentator. He calls it as he sees it and as he has had years of experience as a player, a coach and has even managed Saints, he knows a damned sight more than most of those critical of him. There are enough diverse opinions after a match about whether a player had a good game or not and sometimes somebody can say a perfomance was man of the match and another will say that player had a mare. Such is the nature of the game. Do these castigators of Dave say that he always gets it wrong, or are they afraid to admit that mostly he at least might have valid points? Or is it just because they don't like his delivery or accent? I hate John Motson's delivery, the way that every sentence his intonation rises to make it sound like a question, but I don't question his expertise.

I do know Dave after a few run ins from his time running the youth set up - he used to coach during the game from 10 to 15 metres inside the pitch and was not averse to blocking off opposition players (really) and he lives in Romsey. You have to respect the man but some of what he says is spot on and some is well wide of the mark. However he is much better than the other idiot (another BBC presenter that does not research the background before the game - did you know we were in for Kris Commons) but when he mentioned he had a chat with Adam Leitch of the Echo I was in hysterics. What a combination of total ignorance.

For me this is the problem - it sounds like two old men who sit behind me (not literally). When things are not going well it's all doom and gloom, feeding off one another's despair and despondency.

Then when we get back into the game, it's all gung-ho and the world is wonderful - the manager goes from tactically inept to tactical genius in a space of minutes.

Really, you might as well read the match thread on here.

The Radio Solent team are generally very good value and i like listening to them. Suprises me that some get so wound up about them tbh.

It's better than the days of Will Cope and Jimmy Case.
