Howard Scores for Everton - Saints Question

Seaford Saint

Recommended Posts

I am in my mid 50's and I am sure I remember a time when a few goalkeepers acored direct.

I am sure it happened at the Dell (a goalkeeper scored direct) and I vaguely remember that it might have happened more than once possibly in consecutive games. If it did happen at the Dell who were the keepers

Can anyone enlighten me?

Don't you all realise that this sort of thing never happened before the premier league

Well certainly that's what Sky would have you believe anyway

I've only seen this occur live once with Mark Crossley for Sheff Weds against us in last minute in a 3-3 draw at Hillsborough, although Anti Neimi went close hitting the bar against Fulham at Loftus Road, before Michael Svennson scored when we drew 2-2.

So was I and the ball was sticking on an unplayable pitch i.e. hardly bouncing or not bouncing at all and so Forsyth waited for it to land only to find that it hit the only solid part of the pitch and bounce over his head

Exactly as I remember it too. Impressed that there are two of us of our age with such mental powers of recall. ;)

Also remember getting totally soaked. You don't get piches like that any more! (except perhaps at Wycombe, Exeter, Yeovil ....)

Peter Shilton for Leicester in a 5-1 win?

I was on my way out at 1-4 and heard the crowd groan. Asked Dad who scored for Leicester and he said Shilton - I thought he was having me on until we got to the car and it was a lead item on Sports Report.

I seem to recall that Pat Jennings also scored around the same time.

I was nice & dry that day, a family friend took me down using his pal's ST and I was proper posh up in the West Stand having been a choco box regular!

Jeez there's a lot of old farts on this forum

probably because going to football on your own was the first sign of juvenile emancipation in our day. I'm sure I was going on my own from about 10 onwards, number 14 bus to Stag Gates, walk down with a couple of other lads, through the boys gate for a handful of shrapnel and then you were free to swear all you liked

without getting moaned at by your mum and grounded by your dad.Poor little sods have to go with their folks nowadays.

Special buses went from outside The Gateway as soon as they filled up. Many a time we missed it, despite being in The Archers. Got off this one in Swaythling and our neighbour got off with us and asked if we had seen it.

I was devastated. Luckily ITV had a camera on the roof of the West stand and showed it on Monday's Day By Day.

I knew I had seen a goalkeeper do this, and same as you recalled that some one else did this at that time

Remember it well as do others. I am certain that Forsyth shouted 'mine' as he watched it come down and then....like it says above!

it was a dreadful day, and like a few others, I missed Shilton's goal. My dad and I were so soaked, we did something we never did before - or after. We left before the end and heard a cheer halfway up Milton Road, assuming Saints had pulled one back only to discover the gory details later.

Campbell Forsyth said the ball bounced on the only piece of solid ground - the painted line of the 18-yard box.

It wouldn't happen today with the much lighter marking material used, but I remember when pitches had rock-solid markings thanks to succesive layers and layers of white paint.

I recall the Jennings/Shilton goals (although not live, only on TV), Shilts was in my second season supporting Saints.

There is actually an article on goalscoring keepers in Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_goalscoring_goalkeepers

I am still not convinced that Jonny Vegas actually scored or was even a keeper, he is too much of a lardy (even more than me)!!

We need a Saints keeper on the list (besides Shilts and Brucey).

BBC news report of the goal today said it 'made history'. Then mentioned the other ones. D'oh.

I think in fact Howard's goal might well be unique. I may be wrong but my memory of the others - Jennings; Stepney; Shilton etc was that they all came from kicks from hand. I think Howard's goal was the first where a goalkeeper played the ball from the ground and scored. If true it would also make it the longest goal ever scored by someone kicking a ball from the ground.

Robinson for Spurs, Matthews for Weymouth off the top of my head have both scored from the ground.

I saw Lee Turner score an identical goal for Margate against either Folkestone or Bashley at Hartsdown Park in 1999. Defender laid it to him and he just hammered it.

I was there, still mentally scarred ...

I was there .... but have always been mental!!

Somebody mentioned Pat Jennings scoring as well in the same season. Pretty sure it was against Man U at Old Trafford. I wonder what Fergie would have made of that!!

It was against Alex Stepney who scored a few times himself a few years later as Man U's peno taker!! I wonder what happened if he missed any?

Yep, like loads of other posters I was there the day Shilton scored, it's not the sort of thing you ever forget, I remember exactly where I was standing --under the old halftime scoreboard penned in the Archers corner, always a brilliant view but that was something you wouldn't want to see, nightmare stuff, and soaked to the skin as well. What else would make thousands of people stand for two hours in pouring rain?
