Saints in the PL

Not that I would take too much store by what Redknapp says this interview with Robert Peston http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16357044 does make interesting reading. If what he says is true and I suspect it is what chance does any team have of

breaking into the top 6 (assuming we do go up at some point) without spending as much as the Man Us and Man Citys of this

world. Wonder if Nicola took this into account when saying that CL is the club's goal

tbf I know it is a long shot from where we currently sit, but looking at ex youth players and ex players who have gone on and played in the champions league (Bale, Bridge, Walcott, Chambo, Crouch) What if we kept these types of players over the next 5 years instead of selling them like we have done in the past. Who says we would have to spend £100+ to get into the top 6?

right..you really think we will shell out £100m+ in transfer fees do you..?

Didn't someone post recently that Markus bequeathed a c.£300m Premier League investment 'war chest' to Southampton FC? I can't remember who posted that or if indeed I imagined it.

top 6 is not CL is it....

we would still lose the odd star even if in the premier league

don't think we are...not too sure why that is relevant in spending £100m.....I don't think stoke are skint but they day they finish at least 4th is the day we all support pompey

If Cortese says the clubs ambition is to be in the Champions League, and we are owned by a family who's estate is worth Billions...

Who the f*** are we to question them ambitions? Just because we are not throwing money down the drain at every opportunity, doesn't mean we don't have the money to get us there.

well, we shall see......I just don't think we will do it..or why not just buy the league this season....it won't cost a great deal really considering the money recouped for just finishing 20th in the prem next season..?

That, it seems to me, is the overall plan... Easier said than done mind.

Look at Leicester. Then look at us. Then do so again. Then again. Then again.

By then it should have sunk in that you cannot just buy anything in football. You have to build it.

but we are not leicester..we do not have sven, we do not have pearson..we have adkins...would you not trust adkins to buy better players..?

so, how are we going to get top 4 in the prem when we are not going to throw cash around...? it simply will not happen...spurs have broken into it..ONCE and they have a massively expensive squad, spend massive money and have a massive wage bill and are funded heavily buy a man with very deep pockets in doing so....they have got 4th...ONCE

I knew someone would comment on that! The original post mentioned breaking into the top 6! I just mentioned that ex players have gone on to play in the champions league, it would have taken longer to mention ex players who have finished in the top six or even played in Europa league.

If you think we will hold onto all out young players when we get to the Premier League then you are suffering from delusion. As soon as one of the big 6 wants one of our stars then they will be off. Our potential is a top 8 club if we invest heavily but moving into the top 4 or even 6 would be very difficult. Just look how hard Spurs have found it despite having an advantage of being in London and investing very heavily.

What you on about? It's entirely possible to do it without spending hundred of millions. All you need is a good academy and a decent manager, the rest just slots into place. An apart from all that, didn't they once day man would never climb Everest?

I think there's a good chance that in the next 10 years a club other than the current top 6 will get into the champion's league.

well, lets see out ambition the transfer window....being top when the window opens suggests that we will be very VERY fortunate to have a better chance of going up.....just need to cement that....

It's possible. Everton did it. Once. Didn't and doesn't make them a Champion's League club.

Southampton won't be and we shouldn't be even thinking about it. An utterly pointless and potentially corrosive ambition, and I seriously doubt the club are in any way even considering it.

I personally have no interest in Saints being a CL level club. None. But everyone on here is free have their own dreams and aspirations, but don't turn them into expectations.

I agree getting into the Premier League this season would be a real achievement but I wouldn't want to go up and struggle like we did for all those years at the Dell. CL? Not really necessary and possibly a little over ambitious but comfortable and in the Europa and a shout at the occasional domestic cup would be most suitable IMO. We need to spend now though to cement our promo prospects as this oppo may not come round again for some time so let's see just what this window brings

The CL claim was made whilst Markus was alive. Is the aim still the same since his death? Personally I always thought it was ********, but as has been said Everton did it, so no reason why a side from outside the normal top 6 could not do it given the right circumstances - mostly that several of the top 6 have their own troubles all at the same time.

We're such a long way from even getting promotion, so its hardly worth talking about.

the prem top 3 could change drastically if financial fair play rules come into play, we are potentially in a fantastic position.

An excellent point well made. Even so, I think there are too many pessimists on this forum who just cannot visualise what might be possible with the right management and resources. They probably are happy sitting in their mediocre little worlds not daring to dream of better things. Believe!

Imho, there will be no Champions league in ten years time, not in it's current form anyway. There will be a break away European league,, to which the money bags clubs will join, this will leave a more competetive PL, but not as rich. Again, imo, we will sit pretty in said league, with a very competetive squad.

people have been saying this for years.........there will never be a break away league in the mid to near future what so ever

Yes because Chelsea and Man City have done it all on a shoe string. If you want to progress you have to spend ..look at Spurs and how much they have spent to get to where they are now.

Its all irrelevant anyway as we are miles away from promotion and the last 7 games have shown we do not have a squad capable of getting us there.

Unless Cortese gets in the players required I cannot see us getting into Prem let alone CL.

We bought the best in League One, we cannot go and get cheap options in CCC so this month is crucial and will show the chairmans and the clubs real ambitions and financial status.

I quite agree. IMO it is worth getting in some proven NPC quality in at least a couple of signings this window.

Newcastle are 7th, have been higher than that, sold their best player (apparently) and were in the Championship not so long ago. Just saying

So we now know Jakob Friis-Hansen actually joined Saints.

http://www.bold.dk/nyt/Friis-Hansen-stoppet-i-Southampton

Looking back to the original article his comments remain interesting...

"The club is owned by the Liebherr family. They are incredibly rich and are aware that it will cost money. On short terms the goal is Premier League, but on the longer term they also want to play in the Champions League and be part of the top clubs in England. With their fortune backing them up they are about the fifth richest club in England, so it is realistic and there is a willingness to expand the academy, the facilities and the stadium if necessary."

It's great to have dreams, but also to stay realistic & enjoy the moment, been a great time to be an sfc fan over the last 3 years, it's great being top of the league at the moment, if we end up the season in the top 6 it's still been a great season, just enjoy the ride, to me champions league is way beyond our dreams for the forseeable future, if you seek unrealistic aims you will never be happy

SFC are like any other company, they can with the right leadership, ambition, investment etc. and an element of luck grow and expand into a world leader. There are many ifs and buts in this. Hate to say this but, look at Spurs, they are riding high in the PL and not one of the big 3, it is possible. But money, the right man/woman at the helm, ambition and a dollop of luck could see any club see success.
