spyinthesky Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 After feeling very disappointed and a bit annoyed (I guess because my aspirations for the season have increased unreasonably in recent weeks) at the Brighton result, I was impressed by the measured and positive approach taken by Dean Hammond in his post match interview with Radio Solent In an age when the majority of footballers are relatively in articulate, he was obviously disappointed with the result but believed that the strong work ethic and team spirit allied to a talented and focussed squad would overcome the recent dip in results and continue progress towards the Premiership. This was all put across in a clear and concise fashion. Of course he may have really wanted to say something along the lines of ..'we are all gutted to lose, cheating opposition players, crap ref, worried about recent results, need more players etc' .... which I guess would echo the thoughts of the majority of posters on here. However the message he gave was..'there is no panic, we are all together, we have now played all the teams in the League and have not seen anything to unduly worry us, we are all determined to do our best for Southampton Football Club and achieve promotion. I just hope that his optimism is not misplaced.

adrian lord Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 I must admit, all this cliche-ridden ManagementSpeak is getting a bit sickly. No point at all in listening to any post match interviews, it is all so predictable.

Stubby Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 Dean was more articulate, measured and intelligent than most. Are you suggesting he's had more coaching than the others? Maybe he just is more articulate, measured and intelligent. Good grief.

Of course I do, and I stand by every word. Watch us take so long over sorting out the team's shortcomings this month that it is too late to impact the decline of the second part of this season. If we do any strenghtening at all..
Barry the Badger Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 Do we have to go through this argument EVERY transfer window. You are talking about multi-million pound business deals. It would be lovely to think they could be easily wrapped up on our terms ready for January 1st, but like most things you have to wait for a good deal if you aren't going to just chuck money at it. Yes, we do, because every window leaves a "what if" feeling behind. In the summer-autumn we failed to secure the striker we were looking for. derry Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 I don't want to hear players and management telling us what they are going to do and how good a squad we have. What I want to see is the manager not picking unbalanced sides lacking pace and players not doing on the pitch what they are spinning. FFS Kelvin forget the quotes and stop knocking the ball out to the opposition. Maybe a few goals from Schneiderlin, Cork and Hammond wouldn't go amiss. You're not as bloody good as you complacently are telling us the overpowering workrate has gone trying to score another 25 pass goal. A bloody shot on target from 25yds would be an event in itself so get at it there's plenty to work on without the spin.
ant Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 Maybe he just is more articulate, measured and intelligent. That's about the long and the short of it. Why not employ a measured approach? Have we blown our chance to win the league? Not by a long chalk. Yes, in reality we have blown a chance to take a big lead into the new year, but what a platform we still have to build upon for the remainder of the season. Some on here are already prepping the ejector seats FFS. Last season we weren't anywhere near the top come the start of January yet still managed automatic promotion; very different circumstances but indicative of why it's far too early to be doom-mongering. The slump needs to be addressed on and off the field, but who's to say it won't be?

In the summer-autumn we failed to secure the striker we were looking for. Here's one for you. "What if" we spunked all our money and more on players we couldn't really afford and then didn't get the promotion? Oh wait, we've been there before and we all know the answer. If it was as easy as you make out, every bloody club would be doing it!

It's quite evident and has been to anyone that has been away this season that the squad lacks quality in depth. If you had only watched us at home then you'd think everything was wonderful. Our away performance have by and large been pretty absymal. One win since the second away game of the season tells you thr story. Not many teams in this division are worse on the road. Dig Dig Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 You would have thought that Apline and the like would learn thier lesson by now. Wasn't he peddling out the same messages this time last year? I've not be disappointed in any transfer window since the new regime. We've always strengthened, all be it a little more gradually than some of our fans base can understand and appreciate. You don't take a team from near the bottom of League 1 to the top of the Championship in a little over a year by accident. It's down to the management and the players knowing what they are doing. I can't believe that you're know sticking the boot in to Hammond for daring not to let the bad run of form get him or the team down. Well actually I can believe it as it's happened time and time again.
VectisSaint Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 You base your reasoning on something that hasn't happened yet? Do you feel that is reasonable? It is no good trying to reason with Alpine. He makes similar statements every time there is something going on. Then when it doesn't trasnpire he finds something else to moan about, and quietly forgets everything he said before. The best thing is to just ignore him, unfortunately it is not enough to put him on ignore because people keep quoting his "ravings" which is just what he wants, normal troll behaviour. Sadly he occassionally talks a lot of sense, but he seemed to lose that ability over the Xmas holidays and reverted to type.

It was quite comical earlier in the season when during his "transformation" he was telling others off for being too negative! He always goes off the rails after a defeat. His reaction after the palace cup game was ridiculous. This run of bad form though has completely scrambled his brains!

I appreciate that we lack quality in depth to an extent, I've been watching the same team as you, I would LOVE for us to make some quality signings. What annoys me though is the foot stamping that goes on demanding that we buy RIGHT NOW without any understanding of what this involves, or any thought put towards the financial implications.
