Brighton 3 Saints 0 Post match chat!

SOTONS EAST SIDE

Recommended Posts

Two or three players on the bus with real credibility in the Prem are needed IMHO. Whether they are out there and ready to drop for the rest of the season I don't know. One or two from the NPC or below that are ready to prove a point but most of all we need proven quality from up above.

does anyone know if Ben Reeves is actually a striker? according to his profile on the OS he was a central midfielder but has been converted to left back. I dont recall him being prolific for academy or development team so why on earth is he being played up front? I know we are light up front but surely we are better off playing a natural centre forward.

Right I only have the radio to go by but my take is we played well in the first half but just like against bristol city we didn't put our chances away. We should have been a couple in front by half time which might have made all the difference. At least two players blasted over when it should have been easier to score (Guly and Cork)

The difference between 1st and 2nd half (other tham Lambert being sent off) was Harding/Lallana were probably the two most spoken names on the radio 1st half after Harding went off for Fox Lallana was barely mentioned again. Might be a coincidcence but I can't help feeling Adam is happier playing with Harding.

Seems to me that we should of tried for a 0-0 after Lambert went off by closing up shop but we didn't and got punished by the extra man.

Well and truly in a wobble now. Just got to try and stay in around the top four while our form is wobbbling. Then a couple of quaility players and a few back from injury and we can put in another good run. I mean did anyone expect us to stay top all season?

He played attacking midfield/just behind Forte in the 2 League Cup games & looked pretty useful - a bit lightweight but plenty of skill & confidence.

Just watched the replay of Lallana goal on Saints Player, def' crossed the line!

Don't know how you can say so so definitely from the clip on the Nigel interview, for Nigel to say so himself he must have a better clip than that. don't forget that the ball (diameter about 9 inches) has to be entirely over the line whereas all we can see from that clip is the ball go towards the goal, hit the defender's foot and come back out. Some of the stills on the gallery would tend to show that there's no way that the entirety of the ball can be over the line but there again there's nothing really conclusive.

Haven't had the guts to read anything in here post defeat so apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.

On a night of few positives I'd like to point out one that was made apparent during the Fulham-Arsenal game. Djourou was on a yellow, struggling with some sort of groin injury and his team was generally under a lot of pressure - Wenger takes off Walcott instead and rather predictably Djourou goes on to get his second yellow, Arsenal concedes two and Wenger blames the ref for losing them the game. I really appreciate that Adkins was able to take immediate action when Harding was in a somewhat similar situation and get him off the pitch. No need to just stand and wait for an accident to happen!

I take that as a positive and lord knows they are hard enough to find at the moment :)

Our away support the usual quiet, half hearted effort from middle aged blokes, women and kids. I know that offends, but its the truth and its frustrating.

i have to agree with you.heres a clip from just before ko.

Why so ? Don't understand what you and Sour Mash find so frustrating about the fan profile. I guess you could call me "middle aged" being 58 now but do you think that just because you are younger that it makes you a better fan than someone who is middle aged ? I count myself lucky that I've got this far in life, I have several friends from my school days who have alrady passed away at very young ages in some cases. When you twentysomethings and teens get older and wiser you will see what I mean but, in the meantime, please don't live under the misapprehension that you have a monopoly on life. It really isn't that bad being middle aged you know. I can still sing and shout as well as anyone, I'm still fit (40 odd sit ups most days) and being 58 doesn't stop me getting a boner every morning at 7am. So cheer up. :D

he didn't play up front at Brighton so your point it mute.

Two examples? Guly - sacrifricing width in midfield by playing him central was a disaster.
don't agree with this at all. He had a decent game and we totally controlled the game through midfield, so for me the formation worked a treat. We came unstuck when we went down to ten, but that is not the point you are making.

Be Cool. Look at Utd, City, Chelsea - weird results. Forget about random Arse. All will be well. Trust me.

Right now, we're top of the table, somewhere we've not been for ages. Despite losing!

Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

(Should I wish to fail to be 'promoted' to the dog's den PL?!?!?!)

Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Just seen the highlights on Saints Player, with particular focus on the Lambert incident.

Happened real fast, Adam El-Abd went down like Lambert threw acid in his face.

Onwards and upwards. We won't play cheating shytes like Brighton every week. Gus Poyet has not yet been cloned, as far as I'm aware.

Just watched all angles covered on Saints player and these are my thoughts on it...

Brighton players are the worst bunch of whiny, theatrical, cheating tossers ever to grace the world of football.

Harding was unlucky to get booked cos he won the ball and wasn't showing any studs that I could see. Reaction of the Brighton fans would have you believe he just decapitated their player.

Lallana shot was clearly a foot over the line.

Guly's open goal miss was a little more excusable than a lot of people on here made out as the ball was just behind him and he couldn't stop and hook his foot round it.

Lambert sending off was comical. There's no way that was violent conduct and I am confident we will win the appeal.

I stopped watching after that - didn't see the point of watching the inevitable horror show to come.

I agree, it's as if the linesmen had it in for us. The scoreline was very flattering for Brighton and the game could easily have been 3-3. The interviews with Hammond and Adkins are great - both sounding firmly focused on bouncing back and winning the division, sounds like they've got the bit between their teeth and are confident they can do it. Come on you Saints!

we played well until the red card. If we play like the first half for the rest of the season we will be fine. This defeat hurt because it felt like we have been robbed, but the ****e displays at Bristol and Donny were actually much more worrying.

And we scored how many? The final score was 3- what? Sure it worked a real treat. NOT!

The point I am making is that Adkins seems too rigid in his team selections and tactics and if he's not careful he is going to stifle the creativity of certain individuals like Lallana and/or squeeze any semblance of belief out of the team if we keep losing. We WILL keep losing if opponents continue to figure out how to combat the game plan that Adkins seems intent on sticking with regardless, home or away. We do not play with enough width - with Lallana on the left, he is most effective when there is a counterbalance player on the right. Squash the play into the centre of the park and Lallana is trapped/stifled/crowded.

Having said that, my biggest issue with the team is the lack of pace between midfield and attack. We need a playmaker CM to play alongside Cork and a decent pacey striker as priorities.

Things that struck me from 3 mins on BBC i-player -

1. Lallana's shot was at least a foot over the line

2. Typical crap D'Urso decision on the sending off

3. Kelvin seriously at fault for the first goal

4. Looking at the open goals we missed, ''couldn't score in a brothel' springs to mind

But we did play some decent football & all is not lost.....

The highlights also seem to confirm my opionon (admitedly from listening to the radio) that until we went down to ten men there was only one team in it ......and it wasn't Brighton. We've got to put our chances away though. The last two matches we haven't scored when we were on top and it's bitten us on the arse.

I've been looking at the extended highlights and couldn't help but notice the striking similarity between Morgan's effort on Friday which James turned over and Sparrow's effort for Brighton's second goal. Same distance, both shots extremely well placed and extremely well struck, difference is James gets to ours and Kelvin doesn't get to theirs.
