SuperMikey Posted 2 January, 2012 Share Posted 2 January, 2012 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-16003723 Pretty rubbish list tbh, although one fantastic band are on there in the form of Dry The River. Proper songwriters, unlike most of the dross that's in the charts now. Great harmonies as well. Saw them at Glastonbury last year and they were excellent, told my Dad to go and see them the next day and he did - without ever having heard of them - and he broke out in goosebumps during the first song! Anyone on the list that you recognise and can recommend?
Ludwig Posted 3 January, 2012 Share Posted 3 January, 2012 A$AP Rocky and Frank Ocean both dropped pretty solid mixtapes last year. Frank Ocean is pretty exceptional and is probably just behind The Weeknd in terms of releasing mixtapes with great crossover potential (from 2011, at least). He also appeared on a couple of tracks from 'Watch The Throne' and has written for Beyonce and some other people, but it's his solo output that excites me. Quite interesting to see that the BBC have picked up on these two, in addition to Azealia Banks (who I'm less convinced by, tbf), somewhat neglecting British talent in comparison to previous years lists. My tip 'for the win' and probably the most likely to succeed are Niki & the Dove - saw them on a terrible NME radar tour earlier this year, they were the first act on but the only act worth watching - they remind me a lot of The Knife, which is definitely a good thing, but more potential mainstream appeal, which is why I can see them winning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPGVTta_lHY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFJQlHJ5EVQ

SuperMikey Posted 11 January, 2012 Author Share Posted 11 January, 2012 Nobody seems to give a f*ck, but Michael Kiwanuka won. Supremely talented bloke, not sure if he'll have the mainstream success of past winners like Jessie J but nice to see some proper talent recognised!
