Brighton Build Up Thread

Looking for a cracking start to 2012. Brighton will be without a number of players through suspension. Schneiderlin misses out due to collecting 5 yellows.

Personally I would like to see us play:

Davis

Richardson

Fox

Fonte (If Fit) / Martin

Hooiveld

Guly

Hammond

Cork

Lallana

Lambert

Connolly

Subs - Bart, De Ridder, Harding, Butterfield / Martin, Holmes

Edited by St Chalet
Can't play Guly twice, once is probably more than enough

Brighton are in a very, very bad way. They will struggle to put out a team to play us, it will likley to contain a number of development/youth players as they don't have the squad.

I wouldn't drop De Ridder, he's been excellent over xmas IMO - he gives us that spark. The only change up front for me would be Guly for Connolly.

TBF though, with the problems brighton have and their lack of any players, if we cannot win there I will start to get worried.

I wouldn't change the team, other than Morgan being suspended. It's tempting to drop Lallana who hasn't done it since his injury, but we don't really have another option for the left side. Dickson, Holmes... :|

I'd go Fox,Harding down the left so ****ed off with Lallana am I. Needs really, really to get it together, if he's injured, get it mended,if he wants to leave, leave but he just needs to stop f*cking about.

Lallana must be carrying an injury to be playing as he is. Guly needs to be dropped, especially away from home. Holmes seems to be fit (if only briefly). I'd go with:

Davis

Richardson-Fonte-Hooiveld-Fox

De Ridder-Cork-Hammond-Holmes

Lambert-Connolly

Bart, Butterfield, Martin, Harding, Guly

This would give us options: Richardson at RM if De Ridder tires, Fox at LM if Holmes tires, Guly up front if Connolly tires.

But I don't expect Nigel will start with Holmes.

A particularly important match for both us and Brighton now, both having been beaten this weekend. We were terrible on Friday and clearly the team were still suffering from late Boing Day hangovers.

If the team aren't still suffering from New Year's eve celebrations we should do it by a single goal, but in truth I'm not confident.

Brighton will, as usual, throw every foul imaginable at us to unsettle the players (like Bristol but more so) and if you thought Brizzle got off lightly with their manhandling and wrestling don't be surprised for a repeat performance on Monday.

Just how much do the team realize that the second part of the season will be harder than the first half and is going to be a real scrap for points, or are they over-confidently assuming they will be promoted because they are quality? if the latter, we're all going to be in for a shock. I hope not.

So lads. A test of character. Mindset!

We can do it! Enjoy the battle!

If Fonte isn't fit then we only have 2 fit CB's and one of them isn't a footballer

I assume you're getting at Martin. He isn't our most cultured CB in a long way and his distribution isn't great, but it's a bit harsh to say he isn't a footballer. First and foremost he defends and defends pretty well when ever i've watched him. Not many fans worry when he's named in the team and I think that speaks volumes in it's self.

I would put Harding in, as much as i think Fox is the better player, i agree that Lallana works alot better with Lallana, who hasn't been firing since early October.

I'm not sure that that's the way to solve the problem, don't like to think of us pandering to the wishes of any given player.

Personally I'd give AL the first half at Brighton to show where he's at just now and then sub him with one of the youngsters

if there's not much to build on.

Dropping Fox because Lallana isn't playing well is one of the daftest suggestions on here. Lallana is a talent and in my opinion is trying hard to get back on form but has got it wrong. Instead of more running with the ball, taking more and more touches he needs to put in a bit of one touch team play and pass and move more thereby getting into better forward positions where his close control will naturally come into play. At the moment he is a peripheral figure playing in front of the defences he needs to be in behind.

He's definitely trying too hard at the moment, he doesn't seem as sure about himself on the ball.. Looking back at the start of the season in the games against Ipswich and Brum etc, he did things first time. Took a shot on the volley, passed first time.....now he wants to take an extra touch all the time, and 9/10 that just kills the situation dead because defenders read that.

Also to be honest I think alot of teams have come up with game plans against him, which is simply to surround him whenever he gets the ball so he cannot release it quickly. That was his strength early on, being able to receive and release the ball within a split second and it opened up so many avenues for us. (but then he also needs the movement from midfield, so that he has someone to quickly release too - which isn't happening as much as it did when Chaplow was in the team)

Just ignore. Don't waste your 3 posts a day on him. Windows has never had much nice to say about Lallana. However Adam has not played to his usual standard in the last few games which is puzzling!
Adam knows he isn't firing on all cylinders he would be the first to tell you and gets annoyed with himself.

Richardson Fonte or Martin Jos Fox

De Ridder Hammond Cork Lallana

Guly (will score) Lambert

Subs Bart, Harding, Martin (if not playing for injured Fonte) Holmes and Connolly (off bench and will score)

I accept that. He is an honest hard working lad from a good family. I suppose he is just as puzzled as the rest of us. I have no doubt he will come back stronger. A goal against Brighton will do him the world of good. I would not be happy seeing him dropped to the bench. He has too much to offer.

I really would like to know who you are!

That only leads to the self doubt leading to the present situation of dwelling too long in possession in the wrong place. He needs to play slick give and go passing in midfield, forget about holding the ball only just inside the opponents half, get into the last third and let his ability on the ball take care of itself where opponents can't afford to tackle him. He also needs to try and not get sucked into a mid position when we are attacking down the right, he would have a lot more opportunities loitering on the corner of the penalty area and arriving late unmarked and if necessary if the ball is cleared to our right reset to the corner of the box. It also sets him up for bending a shot inside the far post which he is so good at.
