Updated : Tadanari Lee Set to Sign

Matthew Le Tissier

Recommended Posts

He was about 5ft 2, Kawasaki or something like that, only Skates would sign a keeper who was probably no bigger than yer average tyro league keeper.

Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi.

The home defeat by Leyton Orient in the cup where he conceeded four really was a shining beacon.

A lot of work has been done in changing the lack of physicality of asian players. In particular the use of Yuki Abe by Leicester indicates to me that we wouldn't need to worry as much about him needing to adjust.

Get a sense of humour!

Actually I expect he'll find a song like that more bearable than his experiences with the Korean squad before opting to play for Japan :

Taken from Wikipedia:

If you follow the link in the article its quite revealing about the "issues" between Japan & Korea.

I was thinking the same thing. Dont the japanese and koreans hold each other in the same esteem as the spanish and portuguese? or us and the french?? or for that matter, saints and pompey??

Some would tell you that the Japanese are just a bunch of Korean migrants at the outset, I guess then that Japan-Korea is roughly the same as Australia-England, nah make that New Zealand -England then.

Did that finish 11 v 11 ?

How the hell did the Chinese GK remain on the pitch after that assault on the striker (c2minutes in) ? It might be argued that the last defender was behind the GK at the time, but leaving aside the 'professional foul' it brought the concept of 'foot raised' to a new level. Reminded me of Schumaker (was it?) in Germany v France WC semifinal 1982.

Stayed 11 v 11 - amazingly, only four Chinese players got booked (and two Japanese). Yeh that challenge had shades of the Battiston collision, though I think in that case Schumacher walked scot-free and was awarded a goal kick!

Speaking of Asian players, a South Korean has just scored the winner for Sunderland against City!

It's been a very odd Christmas for the teams at the top across all the leagues.

Man Utd, Man City dropping points. Us, Whu, Boro dropping points, Charlton dropping points

That guy needed a red card and a court appearance to face a charge of GBH! That was absolutely lethal.

I'm amazed that the moderators haven't policed this thread better. There's some seriously offensive stuff floating around.

To an extent we are dammed if we do, damned if we don't. If we delete everything that could potentially offend someone on the forum there would be nothing left, if we leave some things on that we consider borderline are accused of being too leaniant. Please always do report any posts you find seriously offensive. I'll trawl the thread again now based on the issues people have raised.

We should focus this thread on the footballing abilities of Mr Lee and leave any slang / offensive terms and cultural stereotypes alone from here on in please.

If I remember correctly that was the GK that Arry when out to the far east to watch when he was Director of Football at the Skates. I don't think he made a save in the whole game as his team won by a big score.

Next thing they sign him and it ends up with the then manager (cannot remember his name) getting the push shortly afterwards and Arry taking over as Manager and promptly getting rid of the GK.

Older Koreans certainly do not like Japanese too much according to people I spoke with in S. Korea having spent 6 weeks there some years back. Stems from Japanese invasions of years ago when the Japs slaughtered many Koreans and attrocities took place. There are commemorative buildings in Seoul if my memory serves me.

Anyway, looks like this guy is the real deal. Hopefully it will work out well for both parties.

tweet4EmailPrintTOKYO, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Japan striker Tadanari Lee could soon joining English club Southampton after agreeing terms with the Championship (second division) leaders, local media reported on Monday.

The Saints have made a formal offer for the 26-year-old, Sanfrecce Hiroshima’s technical committee chief Hidekazu Orita has been informed, according to the Nikkan Sports newspaper.

Lee famously volleyed a superb winning goal for Japan in last year’s Asian Cup final against Australia in Doha to give the Blue Samurai a record fourth continental title.

Southampton must secure a work permit for Lee, born to Korean parents and scorer of 15 goals in 32 games for J.League side Hiroshima last year, to take him to England’s south coast.

looks like he has agreed terms.

We have made the gossip column on the bbc site as well with above report, sounds promising! still would take an experienced striker like sharp as well, a central midfielder like Brian Stock ( yes yes I know, but he is fit as a fiddle and has been desperate to join us for two years - horses mouth) and a pacy winger!! Well I can hope!!

All sounds very promising, as does Mr Lee. His goal scoring record is pretty decent too

Japanese players are all technically good and well disciplined - That fits into our club ethos nicely.

Also players like Kagawa and Honda a sought after players, and Lee Plays in the same national side as these guys.

I reckon this could be a master=stroke if it comes off

Also shows what I had thought was bleedin obvious - (in fact i did mention it) in that we are looking far and wide for players now that can step up to the PL. The overpriced "nPc" quality British players had provoked a lot of discussions, but there is a big world of football out there and a lot of quality Technical Ability in the players.

Think if this comes of it means MLG's gonna have a lot of work cut out scouting a lot of other Leagues. How about a nice tough Chinese CB? An big Ecuadorian CF (oh)

As opposed to international experience!!

As we well know, International experience is all well and good but it does sometimes take foreign players time to adapt to playing in the Championship (and indeed English football - take Guly as an example). Whilst Lee might be great in the long run, I agree that someone like Sharp who already has experience of scoring goals in the Champ would be nice to have as well.

We have LB for that, what we need is a name player, and whilst not up there with Greaves and Pele, he is a 'named' player, who scores goals, and will give Saints a bit of the Asian market to get our teeth into. But it's all about opinions, I've never had this erection for Sharpe like some on here, we could do better, and in this guy, I believe we have....if it happens of course!

LB has never scored a league goal in the Championship! and is out for 2 months. T.Lee could well be a better player than Sharp - I don't disagree with that but if T.Lee struggles to make an impact immediately then we need another option who can. If we can't spend again for Sharp then maybe Lukas on loan as well.

I thought the japanese players in the world cup looked technically solid and stuck to the game plan with millitary discipline. I'd welcome this player and see how it goes.

Isnt this a case of a foreigner taking a job and English bloke could do?

Barnard is perpetually injured. I am more concerned with getting players who will help us win games rather than sell shirts in Asia. I am not saying I'm against the signing of Lee, but it is a risk, and we don't really have the luxury of giving him to time to settle. He looks half decent in his league, but I would love to sign a proven goal scorer like Sharp as well.

It's a gamble, a massive gamble. Yes he looks good but so did Veron, Crespo Delgado, De Pedro etc etc. Being decent in one country doesn't always equal you'll be good somewhere else. This could be a great signing, it could be a disaster. IMO if we are serious about promotion then we need a proven championship goal scorer. I hope this isn't our only striker signing in January.

risky signing, not really a Japanese regular and scores about 1 in 3 games in the J League which top scorer for the past two years is Josh Kennedy who was crap in Europe. Will wait and see but personally I'm not expecting too much. I hope to be wrong of course.
