Tadanari Lee gives exclusive interview in the Daily Echo

Exclusive By Sean Carroll

Interestingly, some follow-up tweets seem to suggest that it was indeed an Exclusive interview, and that Sean Carroll is a journalist based in Tokyo, who writes for 'Daily Yomiuri' and 'Weekly Soccer Magazine', who did the interview exclusively for the Echo. In which case, I must apologise for my comment and certainly Jordan Sibley should apologise too for his tweet.

@seankyaroru: #southampton fans shouldn't miss Tuesday's Southern Daily Echo, which features my exclusive interview with new #saints signing Tadanari Lee

I can vouch for the fact that the echo did get the interview in this case and it is not "from a press conference" , Sibley clearly thinks he knows it all.

To be fair, I'm sure he does quite a lot - dealing with media enquiries, accreditation requests, website stuff, then there's the player interviews and other things... i don't know how it's structured these days but I used to know a few people in the SFC media dept when I did photography there and they were busy people.

Phrases to learn.

Ganbare (pronounced gan ba ray) = Persevere (or as we would say "Come on")

Omedetou (pronounced o may day toe) = Congratulations, well done.

Subarashii (soo ba ra she) = wonderful, splendid

Sugoi (soo goy) = Amazing (same sort of thing as wonderful but with more surprise)

Dame (da may) = no good, rubbish

When he gets back to this country I imagine, just as soon as he's sorted the non-football red-tape stuff... I have no idea what that would involve but I imagine it isn't a simple 'sign here' job.

If you'd got a work permit last week for a job on the other side of the world, wouldn't you want to sort things out at home -- packing up, leaving parties, farewell to family etc -- before flying out to start it? I think it's great that he's arriving here permanently as soon as Saturday. Then the signing itself will be very quick. I think all the contract stuff is basically sorted.

i think we should get a big flag with a welcome message on in Japanese , see if JustMike can get everyone to chip in for it again , i'm sure the club will be happy for us to display it when he comes out onto the pitch

something like this will do

歓迎リーは、バスに乗るとゴールを決める

It's not like we haven't been rumoured to have been making bids on Rodriguez, Maynard and Sharp since August, is it ? Hardly a surprise that the gaps in the squad correlate with the gaps in our OCD squad numbering system (which I love, btw) - the biggest surprise so far this season is that Jos took 26 and we didn't sign a number 5. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see Lee take 19 (though more recently he's been 9 for Japan) and as Oxlade-Chamberlain left 11 vacant, Falque is likely to get that.

Seeing as he is a permanent signing I hope Lee gets no.11

Chamberlain was 26 not 11.

It does seem like 11 and 5 are being saved. Doesnt mean we will sign anyone but possibly hints we are trying to get a couple of big signings who would want the more popular numbers... I see 88 is also vacant at Saints.

@jordansibley: For "Tadanari Lee gives exclusive interview to the Daily Echo" read "Lee holds press conference in Japan - we lift quotes via local journo"

haha funny shi.t. Same old Echo plagiarizing, can't believe they were cheeky enough to claim to have done a exclusive interview.

When I saw the story in the Echo online that they had supposedly done a interview with him I was thinking wtf surely the club ain't allowed that, thought somehow they had got in there before the club could tell him not to speak to them....obviously not though just usual Echo copying and pasting.

The echo got a freelance journo to get the exclusive and Jordan Sibley (whoever he is...) has made a tit of himself.

Ok shoulda read through the rest of the thread before posting.

The club will be piszed off if the Echo did get to interview him like that without their permission by doing it through someone else.

The echo are still *****s though.

The Echo is much better than similar papers in similar cities trust me.

For those who read Japanese, articles suggest that the earliest Lee will be leaving Japan is the 21st - one of the articles goes onto say that he might be in contention for Leicester but that seems unlikely if he's leaving things so late.

Why should the Club be pizsed off???

Thousands of supporters don't surf the net or get to read the Official Site and for them the Echo is their primary source of information about Saints.

Why shouldn't the Club work with the Echo to spread the word to these people? I'm sure both sides have been wronged in the past, but why put a petty feud in front of a working relationship that could be mutually beneficial?

Regardless of whether the Club should be working with the Echo (and vice versa), the tweet from Sibley was infantile and just so unnecessary.

I do believe that something with Tadanari has upset NA & it could be the time its taking to get him over and training with the squad.

Glad that's just your belief, as NA has stated how excited he is with this signing, and there are pictures out there, that show TL training at Staplewood.

Sorry don't ask me why the feud is ongoing but it is and as such the club will be piszed off because they've obviously done this interview on the sly without their permission and will see it as a 1 up over NC/the club. If they had asked the club if they could do the interview I have no doubt the answer would have been no.

I support the club over the Echo and couldn't really care less if the echo are banned from SMS etc or for people who only read the paper. They are banned for a reason and with the stories they write (in particular trying to put down NC in the past) I'm not surprised they are still banned. If I was NC I certainly wouldn't want to work with them after the rubbish they've published in the past (remember 1 charity story in particular).

Is it me or is any one else wondering if something is going on and this deal may not happen???

I refer you to this well made point...

how long would it take you to sort all your affairs in order to be able to move to the other side of the world? its a very big move for the bloke and his family/partner.

Uprooting from Japan to the UK is a little different from putting you things in a removal van and moving from London to Southampton. I'd imagine he has a huge amount of things to sort out on top of just getting the paperwork done.

have you ever heard of the concept of freedom of press? if the paper uses its own initatiative and does an interview that is up to them, they do not have to go to the club and beg for permission each time.

if the only outlet for saints news was the official site it was would be the most biased borefest going. having the media to check and challenge any decisions is healthy.

Freedom of Press? Don't make me laugh.

Firstly (and in my own personal experience with the Echo from many years ago), the facts that get presented to the reporter don't always end up appearing in the Newspaper - especially if they can sensationalise it in some way to sell more papers. Secondly, have you heard of the concept of a contract or even copyright? There are many instances in this world where you cannot just go around talking to and quoting people without express permission. I have no idea whether either of those are in play here, but you are very naive if you think the press can just go where they want and talk to who they want whenever they want.
