Updated : Tadanari Lee Set to Sign

Its the endless grind of the season which is so taxing rather than the length of the close season imo. They dont get to do many of the things you and I take for granted during the year. When the club is playing two games a week they are training at least six days out seven, on and off coaches and hotel rooms - even training Christmas day. No part of their week is guaranteed time off, they can be called in at any time and cant ever take weekends aways. My performance would drop off after a fews weeks on that schedule.

Fair point. I guess my post had a sprinkling of Devil's Advocate about it.

Apologies if this point has been made.

Colinjb makes the point in his article about Lee coming that for the club to announce the talks in advance of it being absolutely uncertain is highly unusual, if not unheard of, for this regime.

This sounds like to me that either the club are acutely aware of the panic in the fan base following the Brighton result, or perhaps even share it.

Maybe because he told me over coffee and what with the japanese press reports the club knew the cat was out of the bag :smug:

Have you considered that as the player is now training with the club and likely staying at a local hotel it is easier for them to just announce it in the way they did than attempt to cover it up? Journalists will see him when they film training each week and the public could see him around town or at the hotel.

I don't think NA or NC are the types to react to perceived panic or indeed to panic after a few poorer results. Neither of them would have got to where they are if they panicked after the month we have just had and the position we are in. I think that the statement on the OS is there because information was in the public domain so they felt the need to clarify the club's position and intentions. It might be part of the negotiation tactics or a way to demonstrate to the authorities that we are serious about getting a work permit. I agree it's unusual to hear this type of information onthe OS, but then it's unusual for us to sign players from the J-League and so there might need to be some alteration to our usual MO.

Pretty sure they did it when Dean Hammond was in talks with us.

But he is better than Sharp, Maynard or Juketiwicz?

Only time will tell but I would have rather had someone that had at least played in English football before

We all know how long some foreign players take to 'bed in' to the English game and style of play

I am still hoping we get Lee AND Sharp or Jut!! Think to be safe, we need two strikers

Can't see it. Adkins said 1 or 2 signings. May just be a figure of speech, but wouldn't expect 2 strikers. 'Better than Sharp or Maynard' is really unfair. That's judging him based on targets we might have just invented ourselves. Can anyone confirm we can afford Maynard and Sharp?

Surely the only thing that matters is whether he improves our striking options, and I'm sure he will.

No doubt he'll be written off after 1 or 2 games like Guly though.

I think Lee will be a breath of fresh air, I also think Sharp could be that Ormerod style poacher we miss! Just hoping really

Good point Battersea - but i disagree this guy is 27 and I believe will be pulling on a shirt up front as soon as the deal / work permit is completed. Lee will be I think a main player for us this season - he is not coming here to develop , in his interviews in Korean he wants to come here a light up the league - He will cost the club @1.7m in transfer fee and he is without doubt here to be off from the start - Another interview Lee said that representatives were at the Asian Cup final from the club so I think the research has been done -

Blimey! I hope he hurry's up, I've seen 25, 26, and now 27, he'll be 35 by the time he plays!

My take on this is that Lee looks to be potentially an excellent signing for the medium term. It is an opportunity to sign an international striker from a reasonably high-ranking country, and Nige and the scouts have surely done their research into how he plays and feel confident that he will fit in with our style. I'm sure they've also done their research into his attitude and even without English language, he will be willing to learn and probably has the ability to do so quickly. However, just like with Stief, Adkins is not going to hurry him into the first team unless he really does take things by storm. There will be a bedding in period, both culturally and from a footballing point of view. This is not a signing for now; I think a few goals from the bench in the first few months could be the most we can expect. So he is NOT a signing to cover Lambert's ban and Guly's injury, and it is not even a signing to try and 'rubber-stamp' our promotion credentials. It is a calculated gamble on an international striker available on a free transfer.

It does not fulfil our immediate need for a proven striker at this level who is currently on a good run of form and high in confidence, who can fit straight into our team, possibly knows one or two faces around the dressing room, can cover Rickie's absence, and can give us 10 goals between now and the end of the season to help fire us to promotion. And seeing as I don't see too many Premiership strikers queuing up to join us, that leaves only a select few names that fit the bill, namely the likes of Sharp, Maynard, Jutkiewicz and Rodrigues. OK these names have been trotted out for months now but the simple fact is, we have a very specific need for a striker who is on-form at this level and can slip straight in and continue their run of form for us, and there are only very few players who fit this particular bill.

Excellent post. This COULD be a good signing but Lambert's ban and Guly's injury means the situation is totally different and it now looks very bizarre if it is our only striker signing this or next week. If we can't afford Sharp or Maynard, we ought to be asking for a Premier League loan this week. It is a lot of pressure for Lee to expect him to begin banging goals in straight away and leading the line 10000 odd miles from the J League he has just left.

Someone gets it. This is exactly what we need. If this is our only striker then I think we will be throwing our chances of automatic promotion away because we simply do not have the depth to cope with injuries to key players.

Don't think I have done that at all. Entirely possible that we will sign another striker in this window as well as Lee that will see us steady the ship a bit after the poor form of the last month. Also entirely possible that we will just sign this striker and still get promoted. I think most posters see this signing as a gamble though (a gamble worth taking to be honest.) It would sit easier with me personally if the solution for our forward line was not confined just to a player from a totally different footballing environment.

He may need time to adjust and we can't afford to give him that time if he is our only striker in this window.

Why is it people are slating those that are cautious about the possible arrival of Tadanari Lee?

I don't think anyone has really written him off before a ball has been kicked, people are merely highlighting that it's a risky move as ideally we need someone who can come in and have an instant impact.

Granted, Lee may be that man, but surely someone in the ilk of Maynard or Sharp who are proven at this level are more likely to hit the ground running? But again, there are no guarantees with that either, that's football.

Lets just wait and see how this one pans out. It could be a masterstroke a la Hooiveld, or similarly it could be a waste of everyone's time.

In Nigel we trust!

Indeed it could be. Delldays just likes to say things to get a reaction. Obviously every transfer has a risk and this does look like a good buy on the face of it. The problem would only be if this is our only bit of business up front in January.

Look at Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez. One was brought for a horrifically inflated price because he was a premier league, English player doing well. The other was a lad who was doing well abroad and was brought to the premier league for relative pittance. Who would you have expected more from?

With foreign players, you just do not know and tbh, with how little we are splashing out on him, it's no major loss. Unless of course he is our only incoming striker, but I very highly doubt that.

Some here are pointing out his low number of caps, 9 at the age of 26, as an indication that he may not be all that good, but as we all know, international selection is not necessarily a sign of a player's ability. Mentioning no names cough Matt le Tiss cough.

I think the issue with the small number if caps is not about how good we think he is. Any number of full international caps for a reasonable mid-ranking national team like Japan is impressive for a championship team. The issue is rather how likely we are to get a work permit for him given he doesn't appear to meet the 75% rule.

getting a work permit seems to hinge on Governing Body Endorsement,it's the FA you have to persuade of your case first and then the Home Office or whatever. The 75% rule is one of the criteria set by the FA for their endorsement,it's not a Home Office standard.

Aside from Leicester and West Ham, I doubt you'd find any other team in our division about to spend £1.8m on a player this transfer window.

People are understandably a bit cautious as this could be our only striker signing this window. But even if it is, Lambert, Connolly, Guly, and Tadanari is a decent stable of strikers to choose from. Plus Guly, and it sounds like Tadanari too, can play in other roles. I've discounted Barnard as he has hardly featured due to injury thus far.

We have to trust Adkins with this one. Cork, De Ridder, Hooiveld, and Fox have all been decent signings in my opinion, so lets hope this guy is one too. I think this takes our spending since promotion up to about £5.5m - £6m?

He's clearly a good player - but settling in and communicating with his team mates is going to take longer and be a much bigger challenge than for players from europe.

Yes.

He's a strange choice to bring in in January in order to address immediate team shortcomings. He may come straight in, do well and pull our promotion campaign back on track, but my gut feeling is that due to familiarisation time, they view him as one for next season, whichever league we are in. Sharp, Maynard and Jutkiewicz could have a more immediate impact.

Which poses the question as to whether NC and NA are looking for another striker still, or see promotion this season as nice to have with our main thrust being next season. If the latter is the case, they are making a mistake.

I'm pretty sure Lee has a year left on his contract. It expires 31.01.2013?

well I really don't know then, I was told and have seen written that he is out of contract and is seeking a new club

He's represented by a German agency BBC fussball something or other. They have been trying to flog him around Europe for a while now, last summer it was Hertha Berlin, several French clubs got a circular about him (heard about it,not seen it though) and one of the selling points twas that he's free of all contract.

However I don't think all the information you read on transfermarkt is necessarily kosher if that's where you got the contract date from.

I've been working for 25 years and the most I get off in one chunk is 2 weeks. I'm sure someone as fit as a young(ish) professional footballer can cope with the toils of playing football without a 6 week break. IMHO of course.

This has come as a shock to me - you always seem to be on here. Do you mean that you have been employed for 25 years. ;)

Given that we have reached agreement with the player and his club there is no reason for not announcing the move - it may also put a little pressure on whoever has to approve the work permit. It, of course and as you rightly say, has absolutely nothing to do with the Brighton result, and any suggestion it does is just Alpine's megalomania getting the better of him.

They are three of a small number who are available, affordable and in form in the npc. I think the point is that many other options represent a bigger gamble when what we really need is someone to make an immediate impact between now and the summer to propel us to promotion.

I doubt that has any bearing on things what so ever.

Then again if you read the latest Nippon Gambare gumph he expects to have his permit soon (dates vary from tomorrow until 12th January) then he's going back to Japan to sort some things out and should turn up to play for us by the end of the month.

On saintslist we have a new Japansese correspondent, Atsushi Sasaki or something like that,he implies in his latest missive that he doubts whether Delastrade's stuff is factually correct. So if you're reading in Atsushi why not sign up here, get some real English lessons from us all and some real bolleaux to dis.

It's just stupid to me that there will genuinely be people out there who say we're not ambitious enough or will be disappointed if we don't get one of those three, purely because we were linked with them each of them - once. I would be horrified to be quite honest if the club hadn't looked beyond those three, just as a lot of people on here haven't done. Luckily, I don't think that is the case, the club hasn't just set its sights on those three and not let go.

Paul Jewell is playing a very risky game by continually saying he wants Sharp and coming out and saying how negotiations have gone or what he has or hasn't done. If he doesn't get Sharp he'll look even more of an arse than he does already.

To reiterate, Jutkiewicz, Sharp, Maynard and Rodriguez aren't the only four attainable strikers in the world capable of playing for us. Can we please try and open our minds a bit and not focus solely on them. It doesn't help anyone in the end.

No I said that in my opinion our squad depth was not sufficient enough to stay in our current position. History has shown how weak we are without certain key players and with little backup for Rickie for example we will struggle IMO. This is the best chance we have of promotion and I would hate to see us miss out due to lack of cover or a striker with good npc experience who can hit the ground running.
