Or Fonte with Guly. You need to have a forceful character to make it in an English dressing room and Japanese players tend on the quiet side. Guess Adkins has to figure out ways, without the natural benefit of language, to draw the lad out of his shell without embarrassing him.
A couple of nights out at 90 degrees should do the trick.

Haven't been too many Japanese players in England to compare him to.

Any stattos know how his goal stats compare to others in the J-League?

Surely the club wouldn't put it on the OS unless it was effectively a done-deal? The work permit, from my limited knowledge of them, shouldn't be too much of a problem if he's a Japanese international, right?
Wouldn't be so sure TBH, this is Saints remember!! Can't remember us ever having a smooth passage when it comes to work permits. They even f*cked us about over Jaidi, IIRC.

So "Japanese International Star"; "Scored winner against Australia in Asia Cup Final" so waht's missing from the perfect CV

No effing Premier League team is interested....

So how has this amazing talent slipped through the net?

Another Adkins hunch who will soon join Rochdale on loan?

For a dead bloke you sure are f*cking miserable aren't you?

For the record, clubs in the top flights of Germany and France have tried to sign him, or are you such a bloody hermit that you aren't aware of life outside of the Premier League - or perhaps the New Forest?

Well, its hardly transfer news, is it ?

Its a heads-up that some talking is going on. I'd be surprised and worried if it werent.

It's not news of a confirmed signing, it's news of a likely one though. It's still news.

If the 10 o clock news announced that there is was a very high chance of a hurricane hitting Austria tonight, would you sit there moaning that it wasn't actually news, just a heads up?

As he is training with the club and probably staying at a local hotel until his work permit is resolved, it would be hard to keep it under wraps. So probably just easier to release a statement like they have.

Interesting interview GWC. Thanks for that. Sounds like he could be a bit hit and miss at times but clearly got the talent. Hope he fits in very well with us and seems to have all the attributes to do so. Also with Adkins' constant positivity, you can't really ever see him hitting a 'slump'!

This got me thinking about other Japanese players that have come over here and played for English teams.

The main one I can recall was Junichi Inamoto, I remember he was a huge star in the 2002 World Cup so Arsenal bought him off the back of that. There was plenty of hype around him but I think he completely flopped. Then he went to Fulham where he also made little to no impact. Not sure where he went after that but suffice to say he didn't quite live up to the expectations.

Another one was Kawaguchi, the goalkeeper for Pompey, who likewise didn't particularly make an impact there.

More recently Nakamura was a big player for Celtic for several years but then, that's the Scottish league so i'm not sure how much you can rely on that.

I think maybe we should reserve our judgement on this guy until we've seen him play a few times...

He went to West Brom and wasn't really given a chance, I remember because a load of Japanese journalists turned up at SMS for our game against them and were turned away because they didn't have accreditation. There will be a huge amount of interest in Lee now it's been confirmed by the club, no question.

add the striker Akinori Nishizawa to that list he played against us for Bolton in the worthless cup years ago at the reebok, we lost on penalties. He was an absolute legend on Champ manager but never made a league appearence for bolton and disapeared after that

I suppose he must mean that Lee scored the winning goal in the equivalent of the European Nations Cup, and Japan are rated 19th in FIFA ratings..

can't be that bad -especially if he is their star player...

He may came on in the 110th minute to score the goal and made another substitute appearance in that tournament

I'm looking forward to having a Japanese player. Hope he's successful and becomes a favourite, would gain saints a lot of fans too.

Although I'd prefer it to be Honda.

Many, many European clubs after him from memory. For a good long while too. PSG were favourites not too long ago, we may have to settle for Lee!

In fairness to Nakamura he did play alright for Reggina in the lower end of Serie A before joining Celtic.

If Saints get promoted his salary rises from 15k p/w to 23k p/w according to this...

Well I don't expect making up crap to fill papers and blogs is exclusive to the UK.

If he really has been going around telling everybody full details of his contract NC will have it in his well filled waste bin even before Lee gets to sign on the dotted line.

Lee Lee Wherever you may be

You eat whales in your own country

But it could be worse, you could be skate

F**king your mum and your inbred mate

Yes it's a rip off of that Man Utd Park song. Yes it's an old stereotype about the Japanese eating whales, but it's as good as I can come up with.

Or a slight variation:

Lee Lee wherever you maybe

Buying used panties from a vending machine

Could be worse

Could be a skate

F**king your sister on your council estate

And yes its a stereotype about Japanese being pervs and the eclectic range of vending machines you'll find in Shinjuku and Shibuya

Great interview with the commentator bloke. It sounds like he is a very 'Adkins' type of player. A bit of guile, sees a picture, and good technique. The downside of all that positive is the inconsistency, otherwise he'd be going to a much better club. As long as we with enough options to cover injuries and loss of form, having a lot of these players is no problem as when they are flying they can't be stopped in this division.

My only concern is our pressing need for a massive contribution now - in the last half of the season. We saw with Guly last season, and De Ridder this season, that it takes players from foreign leagues a little while to settle down and be in a position to tangibly contribute. And if it does take Lee a while, I sincerely hope fans do not get on his back as they panic about us going up.

That said, I obviously hope he hits the ground running!

Agree - he's also joining us because he fully expects us to be in the Prem next season. If that shouldn't happen, it might affect him.
