Mowgli Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 The vast majority of people on this forum live in la la land. Why can people not be realistic and look at the facts? Yes we're in a far better position than we all expected to be at this time but look at the bigger picture. Our away form is poor. Defeats at Bristol City, Doncaster, Leicester and Cardiff. Draws at Derby, Barnsley, Reading & P*mpey. Based on this form and looking at the remaining away fixtures do people really think we'll be in the top 2 at the end of the season? We've got to go to Leeds, Boro, WHU, Blackpool, Brighton & Birmingham. From those 6 fixtures we'll be lucky to get 6 points. Then there's away games at the likes of Hull, Forest, Palace and Watford. Given they we've been unable to beat teams in the bottom 3 I really don't see us getting more than 10 points from all of our remaining away fixtures in 2012. I await the onslaught from people who disagree with this, but if you look at the facts it's very hard to see how the second half of our season can be anywhere near as good as the first. Not disagreeing with you but it is the coaches and the players who must be reaslistic and keep their feet on the ground. We are fans FFS so its just as acceptable to be in lala land as being a miserable bastard. There is an irony in your post when you say the vast majority are in lala land and then say we doing better than we all expected. Supporting Saints is all about winning the big games and losing to those we think are merely routine!
chestersaint Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 It's getting a bit heated in here eh. I agree with some points in the original OP. A blind man would understand that our away form has been really poor so far. Only our outrageous home form is keeping us ahead of the pack. It may be a blip but that superb form looks to be waining so the natural question is; where does that leave us? A couple of signings in January and who knows, our away form could pick up. ChesterSaint is making the assumption that our away form will remain poor and our home form continue to drop and subsequently we will slide out of the reckoning. It is a reasonable assumption to be fair. However, nothing is set in stone and I believe we will ride this blip and with the return of Chappers, a couple of astute signings, a hopefull return to form of Lallana, and an improving De Ridder, we have what it takes to maintain a challenge. Just for the record, those posters calling each other ****s and cocks etc because they don't agree with other, need to get a grip. You wouldn't speak like that to each other in the pub so how is it acceptable whilst behind a keyboard? And to question someone's 'worth' as a saints fan based on their beliefs for the rest of the season is as sane as Anne Frank having a drum kit. CanadaSaint Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 Not sure why you have to keep referring to me. I have posted numerous times that I posted in that thread out of frustration when it looked like only a miraculous run would get us to promotion (which is then what we had.) You then decided to say that I wanted the club to fail. I don't think that subsequent posts (including my argument with Alpine yesterday) has backed up your view in any way. A better man would apologise. Yet again you fail to read - or comprehend - what's in front of you. It seems to happen when you start typing - in anger or frustration or indignation - before you've thought (or read) things through, which was constant and is now thankfully only occasional. As you very well know, I'm far from the only person to take issue with that trait on here. Try reading the second-last sentence again and then we'll see if your misdirected "better man" comment applies for your own screw-ups. I suspect it doesn't. I think that unfortunately the jolt of realism brought about by the December results naturally causes people to lash out in frustration. We can't all have the same opinions and it is good that people see things from a different aspect. I have always said things as they see them (from the days o the failure to re-appoint Hoddle debacle), and understand how difficult it is for some fans to accept reality. We are definitely at a crossroads in the season that is for sure and only time will tell if my prediction of lower mid table obscurity is a more accurate prediction than those saying we will finish top 2. I have pinned my colours to the mast based on our fairly modest ambitions over the summer transfer window. Some people have done the smae. but not many. A lot of fans have re-adjusted their predictions in the light of the good start and no doubt will do again as our form dips. I am not surprised as most people do not like making bold predictions, particularly if they are not what people want to hear.

colehillsaint Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 I get frustrated with this debate. Take a business as an anology. I run a fleet of 12 trucks. Do I; a) change every truck at the same time once every 10 years, mucking up all my other arrangements in the process. b) never change any because they all went OK today, and suddenly wonder why I own a load of ancient unreliable scrap. c) make a plan and change a couple every year to keep a good fleet of trucks. We should make 2 or 3 of signings every window. We should do this if we are top of the league. We should do this if we are bottom of the league. It keeps the team fresh, and helps everyone at all levels by not changing too many variables at once, because a football team is like a golf swing in that way. I hope that NA and NC understand this, but you have to give them the benefit of the doubt because we are top of the bloody league.

Dalek2003 Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 If we end this season just outside the playoffs, or losing in the playoffs, the complacent few will still say what a great season it's been - how they never expected to spend half the season in the top two, never expected to finish so high, how great it will be to have another season in the Championship, etc, etc. Being a critical friend is far more supportive of the club than lamely praising everything they do, as if losing matches is just as good as winning. The critics want to see more done to ensure this great club gets back to the top half of the top league and to do that these days you must have a team of truly quality players but the first step has to be to get out of this second tier division we are in. This season we have a great chance, but a chance that can yet be thrown away by results such those over the last 5 weeks. The need for quality into the side could not be clearer, and Adkins has said that himself. HE can only pick the players he has on the books so bringing in better is the way to ensure the good first half is not thrown away. Five signings, please. Oh, and offload some of those who are never going to be premier league standard. So, whose responsibility is the signing of new players then ? PokingFun Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 The OP is spot on. We've had the easy leg of our away fixtures. The next two months look horrific. We've done very well to start 2012 top of the league, but if we dont strengthen NOW (not the end of January) we are going to plummet down the table and out the other side of the playoff places. But surely the converse is true then ..... we have loads of easy games to come at home as we have smashed most of the ones in the top half and have only the bottom half ones to play ...... Today shows that other teams will continue to drop points as well. Our away form is basically top eight and home form remains top of the table and some! As I've said many times before, away wins are very hard to achieve regularly. You're doing well if you can win a third and draw a third of those games and we will do that I'm sure. We remain in a fantastic position and all of our competitors will have their problems too. We had similar comments last season and were in a far less envious position and came through. People should have more faith.

It was disgraceful behaviour and left me asking myself if I really wanted to follow a club whose supporters bullied fellow fans because of where they live. strange

alpine_saint Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 It's getting a bit heated in here eh. I shouldnt find that funny, but its hillarious. Good post.

suewhistle Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 Dweeb, I am so going to ram this post down your throat come May if it goes tits up..... No problems, as I'm sure plenty of people will do the same to you if we go up automatically, although they may use another orifice. I wouldn't be surprised also if it wasn't a more popular event on here too. We do need to strengthen and freshen up, but it must be easier to sell the club to new players based on still being a couple of points clear as we enter 2012, and being watched by crowds of 30k. The promise of promotion bonuses and future premiership wages might help too.
Dr Who? Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 I do not think that anyone wants to win the N Power Championship this year. My tip and a team that seem to be doing a Norwich is Reading. They have won 6 or their last 7. All the teams at the top are so inconsistent at the moment, so I am going for Reading for Champions. Before anyone says anything I know that Norwich did not win the league, but went on a great run to get second. As we do not seem to have anyone that wants to run away with the league, it is there for any team who wants to put a run together in the top 8-10. We will get second. Dr Who? Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 if we fall short, think we might come runners up to boro mate... I do not think Boro have the firepower and I cannot see them going up. Reading play some really good attacking football with 2 wingers and after a shaky start are scoring goals from all over the park. They only scraped through today, but they keep going until the end. We will come second, with West Ham or a team like Barnsley will go up in the play offs.
