S-Clarke Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 and our 13th Home game this season (friday 13th is supposed to be unlucky). Why did we change it anyway from the Saturday/ was a police request, they didn't want us playing on new years eve as they didn't think they'd have the resource to cope with everything. dronskisaint Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Absolutely dire. The team was not up for the game at all. Cant win promotion with games like this in the season record. Hope we dont all look back on this game as the one where promotion went away. Absolutely essential to bounce back on Monday with a win, and to back this up with some pretty prompt transfer activity. Were you f*cking there wrist slasher? Then shut the f*ck up - the run had to end sometime and we are top of the league at the turn of the year. Bristol City played far better than their league position suggests and the ball didn't run for us tonight - end of discussion...because it soesn't suit your doom-laden agenda to see that this can happen it doesn't mean that you have the right to sit on your fat a*se up a mountain and make a judgement. I was there, I'm disappointed but I watched my team play their guts out and they deserve to be where they are. Please just jump off a mountain and give us all a break from your turgid, gloom ridden trashing! I feel better now
Badger Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 The loss of chaplow is key. We don't have any drive or energy in the middle of the park anymore. We're very rigid and flat....no real dynamic midfield play is happening at the moment and it's all too predictable. Chaplow made excellent runs which opened up space and allowed other players to get into pockets. We don't have anyone like that now, which is why it's all side ways pass, out wide, cross in....in front of the back 4 etc. I didn't ever see Chappers become as important to us as he has, but losing him has had more of an impact on us than losing Lallana ever did. Massive loss. I posted this earlier : I do think we are overplaying the loss of Chaplow to be honest. Yes, he was in great form at the time, but we had started the season in excellent form with him on the bench. Yes, I'd like to see RC back, but I'd also like to see the "return" of others - Lallana for prime example - to their form of earlier in the season. positivepete Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Don't nomally post much, but am sat on boat on way home after game and thought I'd make a rare post. Thought we were poor, but credit to brizzle as closed us down well and passed it around well too. We were def not at our best but the potential is still there. Was a frustrating game and the ref gave us no protection and I thought was absolutely dire! Sstill dosent excuse us tho. Suppose the run had to end at some point and had a feeling it would be today! Oh well we can't win them all and be thankful for a cracking year! Just back from the game. For those of you that were not there, sometimes you have to give credit to the opposition. Brizzle played well, and credit to them for that. The ball did not run for us tonight, it happens. We are not suddenly a bad team

Yeah fair point. Connolly is another one. He's not the sort of player that can come of the bench IMO, he needs to be playing and starting games to get his sharpness back. He was one of the main reasons we started so well.

Fitzhugh Fella Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Listened to the game on player and we did not deserve to lose. We were unlucky and got caught on the break. I do agree that we need to strengthen the side, we need better options from the bench. I think it's a little early to write of our promotion hopes. Just goes to show you should not base your opinion on a radio commentary - they were the better side and deserved to win. We were average and they were better, end of. Bailey Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 NA is on a different planet some times! We were cr@p tonight. Only positives were talking about potential signings. Harsh. Adkins speaks a lot of sense and once again, he's right. On another night, we'd have snuck at least a draw out of that. Granted, we weren't playing to the best of our abilities by any stretch of the imagination, but we did get into some good positions at times. Unfortunately, we failed to find our killer instinct in front of goal. It wasn't to be, but this doesn't make us a bad team all of a sudden. Not at home anyway. I'm really mad now and have the right to be so ... Patrik, we really did not deserve anything tonight! I said before the game that I had a bad feeling about this match. Bristol city got it tactically spot on and deserved win. de riddler was our most threatening player but his crossing not great.

We were average and they were better, end of. I'm getting quite tired of this line to be fair - too many people are having their opinions lambasted purely because 'they were not there'. Unfortunately people have to base their opinions on the information sources that are available to them at the time. For some that might be first hand at the game, others might see a stream on the net, some on TV, others might hear commentary on the radio, others (like me) might purely rely on the match thread on an internet forum. Even if we were all at the game, you can bet that opinions would differ on certain aspects - that's just the way it is. My point is, we offer honest forthright opinions based on the information at hand at the time - but unfortunatley that information might be second or even third hand. The forum would be a pretty poor place if opinion was restricted to those who were there. I really do wish the 'I was at the game' lambasters would appreciate this. Weston Saint Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 It would be unfair to say we were poor. Bristol City worked us out, controlled the midfield by packing it, got their body in front of everything. They out thought us, out fought us and deserved what they got. Lallana was very poor. Worst game for seasons! I have been a supporter of Guly but he was so poor I would give him -1 Lambert did the best he could but was up against a very poor referee. Bloody hell was he one sided. CWD Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 It didn't click tonight for sure, but I think people are going a bit OTT about how poor we actually were. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say that the other team played very well. BC were fit, strong, quick to close us down and completely stopped us playing our game. Adomah is the best player I've seen against us this season, he was all over the place and was impossible to mark. We were average all over the park, but mostly because BC always had two men on Lambert, Lallana and Guly. Rickie was marked out of the game, Lallana offered nothing tonight and it was so frustrating when Fox had it on the left and had nobody to give the ball to because AL had gone walkabout, but I actually thought Guly played well. We need players in Jan who'll offer us a plan C or D! Positive: De Ridder was billiant.
Kingsland Red Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Just back. We lost an open and very balanced game of football, which will happen a few more times this season, and probably when we dont expect it, like Rochdale or Brentford last season. Brizzle kept possession very well throughout the game, but we created enough chances to get something out of the game. Brizzle seemed to have done their research on our patterns of play in the final third and David James thrives on the abuse. Credit where it's due, although how did they lose to Coventry? Stu Man Do Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Ref - dire, how can you miss blatant 2 handed shoves on RL? Whats the point of booking a player for time wasting in the 90th minute after a whole half of time wasting!? AL- Not amazing but hardly helped by having Fox behind him refusing to get forward of the half way line. Can't help but feel that although Fox is probably the better player is he the BEST player for this team? The whole ethos of the team has been pass and move in the last year and yet Fox tends to take a touch and bang it up the line or cross field which was totally worked out by their right back. Overall we didnt seem up for it and Brizzle had the perfect game plan. Defend it in numbers for 70 odd mins and then give it a real good go. Adomah looked a bit tricky but rather greedy and Maynard IMO didnt look worth the reported 3-4 million. No better than what we have.

skintsaint Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Just got in from my annual game...and annual loss. Really should stop going to St Marys! Bristol figured us out and packed the midfield and held a high line as we have no pace up front to get in behind. De Ridder on the few occasions got in but inconsistant with the final ball. Need a pacey striker up front thats for sure. City werent even that good which was the worst part but their game plan worked for them. sotonianproud Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 (edited) Ref was poor (not that I am blaming him), first half he seemed to want to allow play and stop nothing, second half, he stopped everything in their half and completely ignored any players climbing on Lambert's back. Also, what was with the James ball, from where I was (Northam) it looked like he handled outside the area, ref went to look and Schneiderlin kicked it from his hands, so the ref gave a free kick to Bristol outside the area, is that not contradicting? Stepgar Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Right my turn. I sat in Itchen North. Forget about league position this is MATCH REACTION post. Firstly i thought thet Brizzle fans were excellent, never stopped singing and were really creating noise tonight, credit to them. The team put out tonight really surpised me. I thought that there could and probably should have been more changes to keep things fresh , we didnt. Concidering we have game on Monday. Brizzle came out on us and didnt let up at all. they closed down, they hassled, they hussled us. and when they regained the ball, they pased it around, in my opinion with ease and we let them. We never matched their work rate from start to finish. I thought that they wouldnd be able to keep it all game, but they did and credit to them for it. This isnt the first time this has happened. Our players couldnt string passes together and therefore deserve low scores for their performance. Our defence is propbably theonly positive that I can take out of the game. KD excellent saves shame the rebound went to their player. But they made that happen because of the above. Their midfeild won them the game today wirthout a doubt and if they could score more they would be nowhere near the bottom. Lambert - I really felt for him. No protecrion what so ever from the ref I cant remember such in inept performance from a ref. credit goes to RL for not getting wound up enough to get himself booked or ven worse sent off. James - a couple of very good saves kept them in it - again! Guly - If I had had a Sniper rifle -nuff said. Subs - Way too late and why bring off AL and put on Connolly. Surely it would have made more sence ton put Holmes on as a direct replacement. Connoly i get but not for AL. And when we do bring Holmes he goes to Left Back!! Surely Harding would have been the better option!! Any way like I said at the beginningthis is not about where we are in the league this is about being outplayed and reffed tonight. Five positves NA. Not sure.

The truth of the matter is you post thousands of replies and comments on here is Saints play badly or get a bad result - if all is well you might post once or twice and that's it. What can I surmise from this? You love it when Saints balls it up. It makes your day. Misery has many friends but it's not mine. I know the bubble will burst some when and I know we will make mistakes as a club and make many decisions I don't agree with but you know what? This is my club and there are many, many supporters of other teams out there that will take the **** out of us, tell us how **** we are and myriad other things...we do not need our own supporters joining in. Support your club through thick and thin, good and bad. At the moment it is fleetingly enjoyable - I suggest you revel in it. Last post of the night and for a while....happy new year. Oh we really need to adapt and have more than 1 formation, i still like the 451 formation, played right its 424 while attacking but Adkins does not like change or do his homework. Chap in the Chapel Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Disappointing result but let's have some perspective on it. We haven't made a habit of losing at home recently and Bristol City did well, with pace and presence in the right areas and a good gameplan based around outnumbering us in midfield. They will finish a lot higher than 20th. The transfer window is coming at a good time as we can add the reinforcements that we need and perhaps take some of the pressure off Lallana, who is seriously off form, and Guly, who is yo-yoing between

Best defender BC had!!! Well done to De Ridder. Bristol had us sussed out, If you were not a Saints fan it was impressively clinical how they went about things. No more free headers at the back post for Lambert, they sent a guy with him to cut off that source. Referees just don't like giving free kicks when the CB and CF are jostling for the ball, even when it means a half push on Ricky about the point of contact. Either the refs are ball watching or they just accept it as part and parcel for the game. Live with it, because I have seen it so often it's not going to change now. The Schneiderlin must play league seems to have gone quiet and we can just return to having the two fittest CM's on the field, because they all go crook on you at some point. When Fox first came to the club I was very impressed with his crossing, where has that gone? His dead balls were predictable, that if the defnce never got to them you were playing the scerio out in your mind before it had finished. And as for Kelvin, a good save is only when you neutralise the danger. We are just in a slump at the presentand will have to wait to come out the other side. We have too many players off form and others who cannot impact the game at present. I expect us to struggle away from home for a further while until we find some form from some source. Forget Maynard, it's Adomah that makes Bristol so dangerous.
Chez Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 very decent game, especially in the first half, but perhaps not enough clear openings for us that our play deserved. For those that went to Bristol, they would have seen a huge improvement performance wise, we got hold of Adomah much better (Morgan especially) and we pressed them much higher up the pitch, where at Ashton Gate we just watched them run rings round us. I thought we deserved much better. Bristol had three great chances, but that was it, we dominated but just couldn't quite carve them open. I actually thought we played better than against Palace, the difference was that we couldn't find a head from the countless crosses we put. For me the only negative, result aside, was Lallana, who just looks miles from his sharpest best and should have been subbed ages before. The difference between this and several earlier wins was that bit of magic finishing. If Fox (Volley first half), or Lambert (volley second half) or Guly (volley second half) had gone in I would imagine everyone would have been more than satisfied with the display. Davis 7 two tremendous saves, one in either half, great sweeping and decent distribution. He spilled two shots that both ended up in the back of the net. I thought he should have done better with both (he made an amazing second save for the goal I must add) and in the end that was the difference between the sides. Tricky conditions, perhaps they swerved, but in the end he will be disappointed. Richardson 7 another very solid display, we just needed another of his super crosses to find a man Martin 7 very nervy start. He lost Maynard a few times during the game, although recovering well, but then again Maynard's movement was very good. Improved as the game went on. Jos 8 solid display again, very composed on the ball Fox 7 got forward a lot on the first half and actually passed it short a lot to Lallana - which he hasn't done all season. Should have dine better with the volley chance in the first half. Thought he could have got tighter to the wide man early on, but wasn't exposed by Adomah who played down the middle this time rather than out wide. Morgan 8 quieter on the ball, but his work marshalling Adomah off it was outstanding. If you haven't noticed it, the guy is quick. Shame he was booked and then made a few too many fouls as he had to be subbed. Cork had faded badly so it would have been good to take him off instead Cork 6 brilliant battling first half, but disappeared completely in the second de Ridder 9 brilliant display, ran their fullback ragged, just couldn't find a man in the second half. Lallana 4 looks unfit to me, wanted too much time and often got caught because of it, we carried him in the second half. Holmes should have come on after 60 minutes and I can't stand Holmes. Boy do we need him to get fit as without him we just lack that touch of class to unlock sides. Lambert 8 his first touch gets better every time I see him. Got hammered by their CBs so many times, but still came away with the ball time after time. Need him to get on the end of one of those crosses, but he was in the box a lot so I guess it was just one of those nights Guly 7 some terrible first touches, some subsequent great recovery tackles, some poor passes, some great hold up play. If you don't like him you'll find enough examples of why tonight, but the same applies to those that do like him. Overall I thought he did quite well. Perhaps should have scored near the end? Connelly, not on long but one lovely bit of link up play, but on a separate occasion he played one of the worst passes all night when he could have sent Steve free Holmes great first touch and another wonderful first time pass/touch that set Steve free. Hammond no time to make an impression
saints-cris Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 Just got back, chilled out a little bit now after being incredibly annoyed after the game. First of all, I would like to say how bad the ref was. I mean that, he really was abysmal. However, don't let that get in the way of the result as we were pretty poor throughout. What I was most surprised about was that we just never got going at all. In a lot of other games this year we might not start that well, but eventually we get or foot on the ball and start to control things - Today that just did not happen at all. Brizzle got things right, they crowded midfield, Elliott was great for them as was Adomah - He'll be off somewhere else I am sure. They defended well, allbeit with a lot of protection from the ref. Most annoying thing was that Pearson who got their goal, was about the least effective player on the pitch ! I did kind of feel things were oging their way tonight, but we never really looked like scoring to be honest. Need a bit of a change up, we looked predicatable and like we had lost our spark. Fair play to De Ridder though, he absoloutely mullered their left back, just wish he could've got got someone on the end of one of his crosses. Win at Brighton and I'll be over tonight. Shame the run came to an end tonight, but what an amazing year at home, we'll never see this again I'm sure. Well done lads.
Chez Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 They could of had Lloyd James in goal tonight and we wouldn't of scored.I would like to have seen him save Lambert's volley. Bloody brilliant save that.
stanstubbs Posted 31 December, 2011 Share Posted 31 December, 2011 sick and tired of people who can't wait to bash saints , yeah we lost and played **** but we have got 47 points after 24 games, i think that's more than most people hoped for. we need to move the ball quicker like we did earlier in the season get a couple of quality players in to strengthen the squad and we should be fine, remember where we were 14 months ago
