Saints 0 Bristol City 1 - Post Match Reactions

That would be f**king mental. We are top after 24 games, even if the original plan was to do the build-up more gradually, it should be changed in the light of our over-achievement.

In that case, let us see what happens in January. NC and NA MUST know now that we need to act decisively in the transfer window. A failure to do so this time will reveal more than anything either a. lack of ambition or b. an inability of the clubs finances to achieve our goal.

Could it be that the owners comittment is less than we would hope ?

Sorry to add to the depression but the slide is starting and will accelerate as the season draws to an end. We have enough points to finish 17th or just above.

I think the cracks are beginning to show - but even if I am of the opinion that we are going to blow it - I also know that we are much better than 17th.

My worry is that we are in a great position - but it will be very, very difficult to do the same next season. Ergo - blow it this year, next year will be much harder.

'We don't get too high when we win, we don't get too low when we lose'.

Annoyed we lost, but really - what was the likelihood we would go the full season unbeaten at home? - And we all would have taken this start to the season back in August!

Hopefully this will be our new Walsall - a long run of wins will start now!

Oh yeah, there's the transfer window too. Reckon we might be quite attractive to players looking to move......

WIFM.

As you predicted etc.

I could understand if there was some sort of tone of regret or disappointment to any of your posts. But every single time the emphasis is solely on the fact that "you predicted it" "my prediction of 17th will be closest" etc.etc.

You're making it very clear which outcome is preferable to you.

Actually it bloody hurts, but I never have and never will pretend all in the garden is rosy.

Our bad run started against Bristol City hopefully it finishes against them, I had a horrible turning point of the season feeling when Chaplow went off after a few minutes against Bristol last month.

Maybe we'll be better for having the wobble now before the transfer window so that strenghtening can be made. I must admit in early November I didn't want new signings to risk upsetting the team spirit but now I think at least a new striker is required.

But what a great 2011 I doubt as Saints fans that we will ever see such a good set of results in a calender year again, we need to make sure that we do it over a Season not 2 half seasons.

I think this loss may be a blessing in disguise. Had we won, the club may have been slightly apathetic in the transfer window, and may have soldiered on without any signings. We all know Cortese is a shrewd businessman and would not stick his hand in the Liebherrs pockets if he didn't have to. With this and the previous few lukewarm results he may deem it necessary to do so now.

Don't nomally post much, but am sat on boat on way home after game and thought I'd make a rare post.

Thought we were poor, but credit to brizzle as closed us down well and passed it around well too. We were def not at our best but the potential is still there. Was a frustrating game and the ref gave us no protection and I thought was absolutely dire! Sstill dosent excuse us tho.

Suppose the run had to end at some point and had a feeling it would be today! Oh well we can't win them all and be thankful for a cracking year!

The vast majority of people on this forum live in la la land. Why can people not be realistic and look at the facts? Yes we're in a far better position than we all expected to be at this time but look at the bigger picture. Our away form is poor. Defeats at Bristol City, Doncaster, Leicester and Cardiff. Draws at Derby, Barnsley, Reading & P*mpey. Based on this form and looking at the remaining away fixtures do people really think we'll be in the top 2 at the end of the season? We've got to go to Leeds, Boro, WHU, Blackpool, Brighton & Birmingham. From those 6 fixtures we'll be lucky to get 6 points. Then there's away games at the likes of Hull, Forest, Palace and Watford. Given they we've been unable to beat teams in the bottom 3 I really don't see us getting more than 10 points from all of our remaining away fixtures in 2012.

Well, that one took a long time to raise its head. The sad, bankrupt side-swipe of someone with no argument to make.

Ive got an argument to make, you dont go to games and you only speak up when there's something to moan about. You see the team about twice a year when they're on tv and you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. You base your vies on listening to ****ing solent FFS. It's laughable that you have the nerve to argue with people who watch us week in week out.

Had a feeling it might go like that. Really shocked we didn't change the team (besides the enforced change). Can that be an end to the 'don't change a winning team' nonsense???

Adkins has spoken several times about freshening it up with quick successive games and I think he got this one badly wrong. Thought Hammond, Harding and Connolly would come in to start, and wish they had.

.

Perhaps, with the benefit of hindsight, but I also expected a couple of fresher players to come in tonight.

Our bad run started against Bristol City hopefully it finishes against them, I had a horrible turning point of the season feeling when Chaplow went off after a few minutes against Bristol last month.

I do think we are overplaying the loss of Chaplow to be honest. Yes, he was in great form at the time, but we had started the season in excellent form with him on the bench.

Time to ban this "Itchen" poster I feel

Quote from another thread:-

"Obviously, our failure to score in the first 45 minutes means that we can't possibly score in the second 45 minutes.

Whereas City's failure to score in the first 45 minutes means that they will certainly score in the second 45 minutes."

Got the Lotto numbers?

Now parked up and waiting for the traffic to disperse. Shame the home run is over but I stayed to clap the guys at the end, it's still been a magnificent year. Tonight was fairly even but Bristol City took their chance. Steve and Morgan were our best players on the night, Guly and Adam were poor tonight. Fraser the better of the full backs, Martin was fairly solid.Quite simply, the window has come at just the right time.

That was a truly dreadful performance. Bristol City deserved that from where I was sat, and that's not how I wanted to see us lose our record at home.

From the first minute we were hassled and muscled off the ball and we couldn't get near them. They were passing all around us. I was constantly hoping for a spell from us, but it never came and Bristol city continued to retain and use the ball well (albeit with little chances created until the last 15mins).

Lallana was a liability today, and you won't hear that said too often. He took too long on the ball, tried to take an extra touch in tight areas and continuously lost the ball and gave it away in really dangerous positions. I was surprised he wasn't pulled off at HT to be honest. Defensively, oddly, we weren't really troubled, but the real issue today came from the middle of the park. As good as the pair of them were on Saturday, they were utterly awful today. Cork just had no strength at all, couldn't keep hold of the ball in any position and morgan kept giving it away. When the engine room was as poor as it was it's no real surprise we didn't get up any real head of steam.

I thought SDR was easily our most dangerous player, the one player that had a spark about him and it looked like something may happen when he ran at their full back - too often though his crosses were poor and didn't cause enough trouble for the position he got himself into.

Don't get me wrong, where we are in the league is amazing, and the first half of the season was unforgettable. Our record at home will live long in the memory too and I doubt it'll ever be matched again to be honest.....but the fact is that this month's results have been utterly, utterly awful. 5 points from 15....let's be honest, I'd be gutted with that return down at the bottom. It's **** poor.

Let's just hope it's just a dodgy month because if we have another one like this we will disappear out of the automatic race without a trace. I just don't want to see all our hard work in the first half undone by such a poor spell....we really need to get together and start stringing some wins together again. It's been a long time since we've had any one the bounce!

Onwards and upwards I guess, new year....let's hope it's as fruitful as 2011!

Just back, and trying to look at it objectively (very difficult). I dont think we played that badly, but I think Brissle played very well and were well up for it. They might have surprised us by coming to play football instead of parking the bus. I think you have to give them some credit.

Also trying to keep it in perspective - thanks NA and Saints for giving us a year like 2011! ...I think they all deserve our thanks rather than a good old knee jerk "were doomed" One home defeat in a year - yes please!

As someone else said it might heighten our resolve to get in a couple of new faces.

Whether you go to games or not - it's not unrealistic to expect the team at the top to take points off of the team at the bottom. We failed to do so at thier place recently, we failed to do so tonight at home (with great incentives too). 6 points dropped as far as I am concerned.

main point - we've had a fantastic year.:)

but

A few players struggled tonight, and anyone defending Guly's touch and decison-making should be quite lonely - don't give me the old 'he makes space, his running off the ball etc' drivel.

He's meant to be playing with Lambert but we are just about playing one up front, Guly's out of sorts and got away with it for his two great finishes the other day.

But 90mins without those finishes = a very poor game.

Ref awful, but didn't cost us the game, Kelv unlucky with the goal, two great saves, third was too much to hope for.

A couple of decent signings, a partner for Rickie, and the bus can get moving again - it just needs a set of plugs.

Onwards and upwards.

Waiting at the station now, waste of 30 quid.

Gil was poor Lambert and lallana did nothing and my biggest gripe is our predictability. We must be the easiest team to scout in the league... All we do is run forward and get a wing back to cross in far post and hope Lambert wins it. No other game plan whatever the formation or personnel... Its too predictable! Annoyed also because team look tired and weary.

De ridder was OK, and Davis couldn't have done a lot to be fair.

Need to get our form back soon or were going to drop one too many points.

Gutted it Bristol again, gutted it's David James. We can lose, but this side should be scoring every home game. Still, the result will be a boost to Darlek and his weird ilk.

I hope the fans learn as much as the players. With short term success there's been an unpleasant arrogance amongst some, expecting us to beat many teams comfortably. Bristol City aren't that bad, went to West Ham and drew, won at Leicester, and now beat us twice. EVERY team needs to be respected and played with no complacency from players, management or fans.

Gutted to mess up possibly the only chance to go a year unbeaten at home, especially with such a limp display. We won't stay top long the way we've played, it's amazing we've stayed top after so many slip ups. If we'd near maintained form we'd be miles clear now. Still, fantastic 2011 for the players and that deserves more focus than a poor result tonight.

Plenty of players needing a rest so hopefully a couple of players can be brought in, and many can sit out the coventry game. Brighton will be extremely tough and I don't fancy coming on here much if we lose that one too. Regardless, I have a feeling we'll end the season very well, and if there has to be a blip (and there always was going to be), it's best to do it mid-season with plenty of time to bounce back.

You are implying that I am pleased that Saints are stumbling and others have implied that I will be pleased if we finish mid table. You could not be further from the truth. Just because I have an opinion that is not very popular and a scenario that is less so, it does not mean to say I like it.

You must be a bit stupid that if you think that people like giving opinions that paint unpopular scenarios. What should they do ? Keep quiet about them, just because they are not wnat people want to hear ? Double Plus Good ! As George Orwell said !

The good start either gave a good excuse or papered over the cracks. Now those cracks are for all to see we will get the chance to see what cards NC holds in his hand.

I have said before, that the modest investment in summer transfer window was a disappointment and will stop us from being promoted. I expect little in January and that in itself should be revealing as far as the future ambitions of the club is concerned.

Bristol City played decent football at times and completely worked us out. We learnt nothing from our defeat there a month ago.

We passed when we should have shot and shot when we should have passed.

Can't be bothered to go into much more detail.

Guly was poor (again) and Lallana was useless.

Thought Schneiderlin was once more our best player, with De Ridder working hard and Lambert being constantly fouled (the ref seemed to be blind at times).

Can't seem to put my finger on what has changed over the last month.

Roll on Monday...?

For someone living so far away and probably not even listening to the game, it seems very crude to have such a forthright opinion of the implications of today's performance.

For the record, it was a smash and grab, we played ok and were kept put by a mixture of last-ditch defending and superb goalkeeping (along with their F*cking frustration tactics), and were done by their pace. These things happen to the best of teams. Get the f*ck over it and put the razor down.

Wasn't our night. A disappointing end to the calendar year but lets get some perspective.

We were slow out the blocks, Bristol City were bang up for this and won every first, second and third ball! They dominated midfield and the pace of Adomah and Maynard caused problems all evening.

I wouldn't say we were particularly poor, but we never got going and too many of our key men had off days (Lallana and Guly particularly). But, full credit to City, they stopped us from playing and if I'm being brutally honest, they deserved the win.

After the Palace game I was convinced our mini-slump was over but this will be a real test of the character of the squad and, more importantly, our promotion credentials.

Keep the faith, but lets draw the proverbial blue line under this one and move on.

Yes, it's hard to take, but the home run has been amazing, and if we only lose once every 20-25 home games, then we really have very little to complain about.

City got their game plan spot on. They crowded us out in numbers when we got anywhere near their goal, and apart from De Ridder down the flank and the occasional moment from Guly, we couldn't work anything. They hit us on the break 3 or 4 times, and only Kelvin stopped them from scoring earlier ... and he pulled off a double save before the goal too! Lambert got repeatedly hassled and harried by their centre half, and the ref gave them far too much leeway to be honest. Only when he got physically assaulted did we get anything. But apart from a couple of poor moments, can't really blame the officials too much.

Despite the negatives, De Ridder had the absolute beating of their fullback and with a little more luck, or a better cut back, we could have easily scored a couple. Once again I felt we were guilty of dwelling on the ball and not pulling the trigger... always trying to work it ever closer. First half, SDR went down the wing, cut it back to Lallana (I think) and the crowd were begging for him to just hit it. But instead it's a couple of touches, then looking for a pass, and it all just breaks down.

All credit to City. They came for a point, and hoped to catch us on the break... and it worked.

All that said and done... James is still a fishy c**t, obviously.

The loss of chaplow is key. We don't have any drive or energy in the middle of the park anymore. We're very rigid and flat....no real dynamic midfield play is happening at the moment and it's all too predictable. Chaplow made excellent runs which opened up space and allowed other players to get into pockets.

We don't have anyone like that now, which is why it's all side ways pass, out wide, cross in....in front of the back 4 etc. I didn't ever see Chappers become as important to us as he has, but losing him has had more of an impact on us than losing Lallana ever did. Massive loss.

Feking bad. Guly needs to learn how to bring a ball under control. Almost every pass to him bounced off two yards.

I think it is season over. We've lost at home to a really sh!te side. We'll be lucky if we avoid relegation. Oh well. League one was actually quite fun. At least we used to win.

Absolutely dire. The team was not up for the game at all.

Cant win promotion with games like this in the season record. Hope we dont all look back on this game as the one where promotion went away.

Absolutely essential to bounce back on Monday with a win, and to back this up with some pretty prompt transfer activity.

Complete shiite about us not being up for it.

Bristol City were very good. kept possession in our half and did a number on us. They defended very well and James made two fantastic saves. The ref gave us **** all in their half and on another day their skipper would have been sent off for persistent fouling. We've played worse and won this season and we played ok tonight, just not as well as they did. Best performance by anyone at SMS this year.

Some players not at it individually - Lallana was terrible and deserved to get subbed, Guly was poor as well. De Ridder was our best attacker by a mile and only really shanked one cross the whole game. Morgan started well then disappeared

They did the same job on us at Ashton Gate. We were beaten by a hard working side which is extremely infuriating,as we were not out skilled. As another poster alluded

NA may now have to re -assess his transfer plans,if we are going to stay in the top 2. My m.o.m would be Jos,which shows what an awful display we put on as an attacking force.[ I think David James had 2 saves to make all night]. The referee was totally unacceptable, but even he cannot be totally blamed for such a poor performance.

Well pleased with the year in general, but 4 of the last 6 performances have not been good enough for a team that is top of the league.
