Luke Shaw featured in today's Independent

Luke is featured in today's Independent as football's hottest prodigy. Still 16 he is a left-back noted for his pace and strength, for those unfamiliar and apparently Arsenal (who have a close relationship with Saints according to the article) are already

taking a big interest (that bit sounds very familiar). Saints hope to tie him down with a pro contract in July according to Sam Wallace just before the new Elite Player Performance Plan comes into force.

"He has not quite made the same impact in the first team as Walcott did at a similar age but the competition for his signature will be intense when finally Southampton signal that they are prepared to listen to offers. Arsenal, who have a close relationship with the club, are very interested in Shaw."

"When" rather than "if"?

Arsenal have good relations with Saints have they? But is it in the best interests of the players they sign from us? What has Chamberlain done since he left Southampton? And have Arsenal really been the best for Theo? Not according to Arsenal supporters, in today's blog in The Guardian on the best and worst of 2011:

"And so to the worst performers. In many cases readers' appraisals seem to have been all the harsher because of the high expectations invested in players: so, for example, Arsenal's worst player so far this season has apparently been Theo Walcott, while Liverpool's has been Jordan Henderson. Neither judgment seems fair: both players have delivered fine performances, not as regularly as hoped but certainly more than some of their team-mates (has Walcott really been less useful this season than Andrey Arshavin, for example?)."

Indeed, the independant obviously doesn't know about Corteses vision of champions league football with our academy graduates. Maybe they need a TSW login to show just how massive we are.

On another note, the lad seems to be a great prospect. I see the Elite Player Performance Plan is being brought in soon and another way to shaft smaller clubs and make signing good young players cheaper for the big boys.

I'd offer Arsenal first refusal on Luke Shaw in exchange for Alex OC coming back on loan in January. Regardless of whether we played hardball with them over Alex's transfer, they won't cut their nose off to spite their face.

If and when Luke Shaw is ready for a move perhaps we'll be in the Premiership and therefore a) in a position to get a better price and b) offer him a reason to stay.

Luke may be a good prospect but history is littered with prospects that didn't make it through injury or application - Jamie White for example). We should use whatever leverage we have to ensure we get promotion this season.

Arsenal are probably the club we have the least favourable relationship with. They make it out as though we are a feeder club.

Absolutely.......add to that the fact they turned down our request to sign Lansbury on loan because we played hardball over Alex and they got all upset with NC I would think the chances of them doing business with us in the near future is pretty slight.

I assume Shaw is in the same situation as Walcott was in so far as he can refuse to sign for us in July and therefore force NC's hand.

The Independent article isn't very well researched, Luke signed a 3 year professional contract in December 2010...
