shurlock Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Still rate Rodriguez higher than Sharp and Maynard. Not as clinical in the box as Sharp or as pacy as Maynard; but more dominant in the air and got the best touch and brain of the three. LJ is quite similar to Rodriguez in that he's decent in the air but hasn't got the same skill or all-round game. As such, I can't see the two being brought in together. Its a nonsense idea that because a player turned us down once, their motivation is dodgy. Players have short memories and will do their best wherever they are, even if its just to put themselves in the shop window for the next move; and if you believe some the stories, the likes of Sharp and Rodriguez seem to have stayed put, at least temporarily, for nonfinancial reasons. If anything, as a result, I've got a bit more time for them. Can't see us gambling on a foreign striker right now given its such an important position and we have very little cover there. Whoever comes in will have to hit the ground running. January's also possibly the worst time to gamble because there isn't the luxury of preseason and time to bed players in etc. A winger is another matter - they're pathologically inconsistent whether they're British or foreign. Saying that, I wouldn't say no to someone like Chris Burke who's probably the most dependable wide man I've seen in the NPC. LJ, Vokes??? Maybe but there are limits to how far soppy-boll*cks sentimentality will get you...
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Personally I'd love to see us sign Sordell. Young, pacey and can finish. Check out his goal here, at 2 minutes
ericb Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Personally i'd love to see us put a cheeky bid in for Nathaniel Clyne, for me he's probably the best right back outside the premiership and would give us an incredible defence. Very much doubt Palace would sell him though so it's pure pie in the sky.
sussexsaint Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 I hate transfer windows. I hate them a lot less than I used to! - Used to be all about trying to retain the players we had, and when they inevitably went desparately trying to scrabble around for 2 cheap alternatives from Sweeden - failing and proclaiming somone coming back from injury was 'as good as a new signing'

Dalek2003 Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 I wouldn't be surprised if we did not get anyone whom we know much about, kinda getting use to loads of wild expectations on here and ending up back in reality land. We will not pay the wage demands of any player in this country who is regarded as half decent, this is not a moan btw, I just don't think Cortese will pay inflated prices or salaries for mediocrity, he and NA will probably look abroad for it. Absolutely spot on. It was obvious by July and i have said it countless times since. LOL at all the people once again coming up with predictions of big name signings ! trousers Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 (edited) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/republic-of-ireland/8894971/Robbie-Keane-believes-winter-break-from-LA-Galaxy-will-help-him-and-Republic-of-Ireland-next-year.html Robbie Keane has ruled out following David Beckham’s example in seeking a winter loan move from LA Galaxy after insisting an extended break offers him the best preparation for the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2012 campaign. 11:00PM GMT 16 Nov 2011 Ireland captain Keane, who has flown back to California ahead of Sunday’s MLS Cup final against Houston Dynamo, rejected a request from the Galaxy to miss Tuesday’s play-off second-leg against Estonia in Dublin in order to return early for the season finale this weekend. But the 31 year-old says he has no intention of pressuring the Galaxy to release him for a short-term move to Europe during the three-month closed season, despite seeing Beckham secure two loan moves to AC Milan from LA in recent years. Beckham suffered an Achilles tendon injury while playing for Milan during the 2009-10 campaign which forced him to miss England’s 2010 World Cup campaign and Keane, a survivor of Ireland’s last appearance at a major tournament at the 2002 World Cup, insists he will not risk burn-out by seeking a loan move prior to the resumption of the MLS season next March. Keane said: “I won’t be looking to come back to Europe on loan, no way. It’s not something I want to do. “I will have a couple of months off during the close season and use that time to rest and recharge my batteries and I think it could work in my favour building up to the Euros. Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Is this an interrogation? I don't know, somebody who is likely to be able to cut it at a low premier league standard, who currently plays abroad. k? Don't worry, I get this everytime I have the temerity to say that the Jut is not good enough. We need to be looking at better players. I tell you Jut reminds me of, Darius Henderson. Scores for **** teams, but a very, very average player. We need to going for players with talent, ie Rhodes or Maynard.

You could well be correct and the type of players you are talking about would appear to fit into our system and add to the effectiveness. It's not difficult to imagine that Lukas J could easily cause our passing game to come to a sticky end and upset the whole balance of the forwards, but I do feel he will give us other options. What we showed against Crystal Palace was the ability to get the ball out wide and get quality crosses in. In that environment Lukas J will be a real handful. Many believe we already have that type of player in Ricky, but Ricky never has been that player and I believe would be even better along side Lukas in those conditions. Lukas J is relatively cheap, available and good enough with the meagre service given to him by Coventry. I don't envisage him being a regular unless he sets the heather alight, but he will give us options to turn games around that we don't have at the present. Just imagine throwing him on in the last 20 alongside Lambert and Guly, who I would be sure of being able to pick the pieces up from that battering ram. Then look back on our recent sticky patch of games and Lukas J could well supply something different in there. I believe you are correct in that our main target should be someone in the Maynard role, but i would go all out for Lukas J as well. Anyway I am fully confident that Saints know what they are doing and we will get what is required, whether that's Lukas J or whatever.

derry Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Maynard would be daft if he went anywhere until his contract is up. He would make a killing in July pocketing a big signing on fee and top wages. Coming to us would pale in comparison to waiting six months.

But it's not just what has to be paid to Donny is it, it's what he wants on a personal basis. If his contract buy out price has dropped by 1.15 million £ he'll probably want at least that amount in signing on fee or loyalty bonus or goal bonus or whatever have you, if we were interested in Sharp he'll be no less expensive than he was in the summer except that the distribution of the dosh will be altered.
