Saints don't want Sharp or Maynard

I really hope it's not Lukas J. Wouldn't surprise me if we went to the continent again.

I quote from a Coventry fan, "He is our last really good player....."

He is doing his best to prop up a team that will set low points records. He will be a good signing if it happens.

I have regular chats at our Gym with a member of staff at Swindon Town, who is a good friend of Lukas Jukewitz & speaks to him weekly on the phone.

Lukas has spoken to Saints & is keen on a move, as his Mum still lives in the City. He would LOVE to join, just waiting for the scenario to play out in January.

Honest to God, straight honest truth - not lying, no BS.

lets not try and second guess the big men (adkins & cortese) too much eh, who predicted SDR's signing ...we may/probably are not even looking in this league or this country, to be honest i get a bit fed up of reading all these saints fans saying we 'need' maynard or sharp, yes another striker is probably what the dr ordered but as others have said ...there are other strikers out there...

and Rhodes is playing for one of the best teams in a lower league and Lucas is playing for an awful side in this league. I have no opinion on Jay Rod, dont know enough about him.
fair point. They are very different type of players anyway.

I have to say I thought Lucas looked pretty average at their place, but one game is never enough to judge a player. With all three we would be buying a lot of potential as they are still young.

Don't judge Lucas please as the Jos deal is a fine example of that.

We have a great team at the moment and if I pointed out to you the quality of crosses (Vs Palace Boxing Day) we would deliver to Lucas then he will score for fun.

At the moment I expect Lucas is getting the service of a hump 50 feet in the air, poor kid.

It's some news that creates more questions than answers.

Not fussed about Maynard, Sharp would be nice but he rejected us in the summer and we've moved on since then.

More importantly, does that mean our reported interest in the other strikers is still valid? Or did the Solent just not mention their name? And who is their insider - I suspect only a few people in the club know genuine transfer targets.

The BBC and the club have a good relationship, with BBC Radio Solent staff and the media department at Saints seeming to get on very well. Along with certain broadsheets I think Cortese likes the BBC and has given two interviews himself to them. I have a feeling this "leak" about Sharp and Maynard may be deliberate as the BBC wouldn't want to upset the club behind their backs.

Not fussed about Maynard' date=' Sharp would be nice but he rejected us in the summer and we've moved on since then.[/quote']

We keep hearing that Sharp rejected us but I distinctly remember it being the other way around. Adkins was very clear at the time that we dropped the interest.

There are even quotes out there in cyberspace to the effect "We got the chance to talk to Billy Sharp because we had agreed a deal with the Doncaster chairman, but after the negotiations it was decided that we wouldn't take it any further, it's as simple as that. Whichever way you want to talk about it, the fact of the matter is that Billy is going to remain a Doncaster player." That quote is even in Nigel's style so I tend to believe it.

Well looks my source was wrong then, sorry about that. Whatever happens I hope we have a striker lined up and aren't just hoping on something that doesn't materialise. Jutkiewiscz is decent cover for Lambert and no doubt could partner him as well but just IMO it's a bit of a meh signing, Rodriguez? Despite the hype he just doesn't look that good compared to Sharp and Maynard who are now much cheaper. Sordell fits the bill in terms of potential but would be very expensive and I doubt we'd have much of a chance now anyway. As for a foreign signing? Massive gamble (as of course all signings are) but do we have the time for them to settle in before making an impact? Naturally I'll wait and see before passing judgement though and I'm sure NA and NC have it all under control.

after doing some digging on the net....Jukewitz or what ever would suit out play...he is far from a penalty box forward..he likes to move across the front like and pulls out wide a great deal...something our forwards seemed to be required to do...he is also pretty good in the air too

cov fans seem desperate for him to stay (obviously)

I would be very surprised if we make a Guly/SDR signing other than a goalkeeper from a foreign side. Anyone we sign for the first team has got to be able to fit/fill in immediately, to do that they would really have to be playing in this country already. It took quite a while for Guly/SDR to fit in. I personally favour Jutkeiwicz as he could play with or without Lambert and wants to play for us. Sharp and Rodriguez have turned us down already so even if they came to us now, their motivation as far as we are concerned is questionable. I would like to see us double up and try and bring in Vokes as one for the future/backup.

As said in Font thread, We are hardly desperate for 1st team forward.

Think club will be looking for either back up for rL, such as Cov bloke, or one for future.c

oncerns with Sharp and Maynatd -will they fit into squad spirit and our playing style?

We queried CB in summer, but Adkins went for one with. our playing style

In which case I wouldn't believe that leak at all - it may just be political jostling from the club to position themselves for a lower fee etc. In my opinion, it doesn't make sense for the club to rule out targets as it narrows options down and any position of bargaining.

You are correct - the club did say that. Sharp said he rejected us. I usually go with what the club says but in this case I believe Sharp more than the club. I guess we'll never know the truth but I just think the chances of Saints agreeing a fee and speaking to a player and then rejecting the move without saying why (e.g. medical concerns in the case of Fontaine) is peculiar. Adkins knows all about Sharp already and if it was an issue around wages then surely that would have been sounded out via the agent before Saints made a bid as bidding for players you can't afford is stupid.

One thing is certain. Under Cortese's leadership Saints are far to proud to beg. We only go for the players who want to play and give their everything for the club. Sharp and Maynard blotted their copy books long ago. Hence we no longer have any interest,

I wouldn't be surprised if we did not get anyone whom we know much about, kinda getting use to loads of wild expectations on here and ending up back in reality land.

We will not pay the wage demands of any player in this country who is regarded as half decent, this is not a moan btw, I just don't think Cortese will pay inflated prices or salaries for mediocrity, he and NA will probably look abroad for it.

we never really got to the bottom of the Sharp transfer collapse, but on face value it looked like he wanted more wages than we were willing to offer. His wife's pregnancy has subsequently been used as a reason for not wanting to move, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. Why chat at all of you didn't want to move. The Maynard deal never seemed to get off the ground as it appeared Bristol City wanted a sum far exceeding what we feel is right for a soon to be out of contract player. It therefore wouldn't surprise me if we spent the last 5 months scouting elsewhere.

Quite happy, as I'm not a huge admirer of either. There could well be better players from abroad more reasonably priced and demanding lower wages.

I heard 3rd hand via another agent that it was because we were not prepared to pay the agents fees and it never really got considered. His agent threw some carefully selected words our way and that apparently was it. I have no idea who we are after now but a combination of Lukas J + Jay Rodriguez would be close to ideal. I don't rate Rodriguez any where near £5M, but those behind the doors at Saints certainly do. It would not surprise me if we still got the speedster in from the continent, especially after Rodriguez form of late, Lukas J looks good value to ensure promotion. It would not surprise me to see a couple of our players go to Coventry to sort the deal, whether permanently or just on loan.

I'd be worried that signing a player for that amount of money would upset the team spirit and lead us into a sharp decline which would ulitmately end in us missing out on the playoffs.

Why would it? The squad at the moment seems to have a great spirit and banter between them. Long gone are the days of Euell, John, Saganowski etc who were more interested in earning more than anyone else rather than playing for the team.

I very much doubt the XS signing will happen but if it did I think It will boost the team...

Why would we admit to not chasing Sharp & Maynard? Wouldn't it be better to no comment as usual, and so help keep our real targets hidden?

Perhaps Bristol City and Doncaster have narked off Cortese in recent months (maybe partly as they both beat us??!!??), and he wants to play no part in any auction which may see them get more money for their players.

The interesting thing with potentially signing Jutkiewicz is that we were supposed to have royally peeved off Coventry when we didn't sign Elliott Ward a couple of years ago and went for Seaborne instead, so you wonder whether Cov would hold out for any other potentially interested clubs (Middlesboro??).

Interesting, that's the second time I've seen Vokes' name mentioned in the last 24 hours by people whose comments I think are always worth noting (the other person to mention Vokes being Clive Foley).

Both could be right. The club rejected the terms that Sharp wanted. Sharp rejected the terms that the club offered. There is no contradiction.
