VectisSaint Posted 29 December, 2011 Share Posted 29 December, 2011 You have to wonder why the Manager doesn't get mentioned as the one involved in the deal. Anyone would think the clubs's media dept have to mention NC in all the major releases to help massage the massive ego..........Just a thought...... I think you are just looking for trouble. The manager probably didn't get mentioned because he wasn't involved in the contract negotiations. Other than saying to NC, please get the man signed up, these sorts of things would not be handled by the manager. Its not like with some managers who shall remain nameless where negotiations with players have to involve decisions on the size and content of brown paper envelopes. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 29 December, 2011 Share Posted 29 December, 2011 With Hooiveld signing permanently, we definitely have the centre backs we need in place for this season. Fonte and Jos are going from strength to strength, and with Martin as a back up, and not forgetting Seaborne when he's fit and even Harlee Dean (who's been getting rave reports on loan), we're quite strong in this department. If we go up? Yes, sign a new CB in the summer, but I'm very pleased with what we have. It aLso seems that Jos and Jose like playing with each other too, which is inmportant. Like much else it remains to been seen whether either Fonte or Hooiveld would prove to be a success in the Premier League. Both look like very good defenders at this level, but the next step would see them up against quicker/sharper/brighter strikers every week. Could they cope with that ? Good question ....... S-Clarke Posted 29 December, 2011 Share Posted 29 December, 2011 Wow nice one - Didn't see this at the top of the forum! Nice to see all our first team players here for the long term. Beats worrying about players running down their contracts!
corsacar saint Posted 29 December, 2011 Share Posted 29 December, 2011 Great news,it is fantastic to know that every one bar none, are on the bus. A top new striker and a play maker will top it off nicely.
RobM Posted 29 December, 2011 Share Posted 29 December, 2011 Got to laugh at yet more gushing praise of our chairman. It seems no one can help but mention what a great job he is doing when a press release is made on the OS. If not NC, who concluded this deal with Fonte and signed the commitment? I see this as positive news, so praise should go to everyone involved. Given there are only a couple of comments about NC in the two articles about this deal, I think you're going a bit OTT. Ashby Saint Posted 29 December, 2011 Share Posted 29 December, 2011 While I think that tying him up to a contract is good. I've seen Saints 4 or 5 times this year and I do think that Fonte is a bit over rated. His distribution from the back is rather suspect on occasion, as is his defending. On the field, he is quick to blame others for his mistakes. I think Jos is the better player.

St Chalet Posted 29 December, 2011 Share Posted 29 December, 2011 I think Fonte is a clever defender who reads the game very well. In League One he looked a class above, in the Championship he has had a few wobbles in the few games I have seen. That said the partnership with Hooiveld has grown in strength game by game. ericb Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Really good news, though if we do get back to the prem' Jose probably needs to reign in his habit of climbing all over opposition strikers. I'm still amazed that he hasn't given away more penalties since he's very lose with his hands!
1976_Child Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 Hooorahh! Always was a good signing. Glad he has recommitted to the Don. Still prefer him with long hair. Was a proper stud-muffin. Oh well, so long as he keeps the ball away from the keeper....

Sour Mash Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 I'm pleased he's signed up for a new contract, but he hasn't been as good this year as I'd hoped/expected and I can't see him cutting it in the Prem. Also, all the references to NC every time a player signs a contract is odd, I've never seen that happen before with Saints or at any other club, just a bit unnecessary. I'm in Newton Abbott and dot have time to look on here all the time. I routinely give the club praise for positive news. Fonte is my favourite player and I have said so on many occasions. I said he was the last player we needed to tie down so delighted that we have.

On the field, he is quick to blame others for his mistakes. I think Jos is the better player. I agree with that. However he is one of those players a lot of our fans think can do no wrong. Probably because when he joined he was very good in league one and joined us from a club in a higher division. He hasnt been great this season but a lot of that could be down to the fact that he played with 3 different partners in the first 10 games, he's been a lot better since settling down with "Hoover" (LOL!). Centre backs need time to build up a partnership. Pleased he has signed a new deal. Edited 30 December, 2011 by Turkish
jampot Posted 30 December, 2011 Share Posted 30 December, 2011 I am also pleased he has signed but do feel he would be exposed in the prem. Jos also, as neither has real pace...

Dont you have a little chuckle to yourself everytime any piece of positive player news comes out on the OS the first lines of the statement are usually giving credit to the chairman for doing a fantastic job? I know i do.

I know i do. How do you manage to miss the first 6 paragraphs? 3rd paragraph for Jos. Why do you find it difficult to give credit to NC when he is the one who works behind the scenes to make the signings happen for NA? Personally I'm very glad that NC does this, and allows NA to get on with identifying targets and most of all coaching the team, rather than getting involved with contract negotiations. It was just the same when Lowe (spit) was in charge or the other clowns for that matter. I guess you would prefer the model they had at Nottarf Krap where they had to negotiate the managers's cut.
