Fonte new contract!

Badly need?! Top scores, top of table - hate to think how badly the other teams must need one!

Strikers are important but the creators that make them score....that's what we have that the others don't.

Anyone who thinks that Mr New Striker will take the place of either Rickie or Guly on anything other than an occasional or part time basis is deluded. That's why we need someone with a bit more to him than sticking easy ones into the net, we have the players to do that already, they don't get injured often and they don't like being dropped or even subbed.

Fonte drove past me this morning - on Paynes Road just past Clarence Hardware in Shirley. He was driving a sporty black thing - may have been a Maserati - and the license plate says F8NTE. Second time I have seen him when driving, I am approaching stalker-like levels here :/

José Fonte has given Saints some early New Year cheer by signing a new long term deal with the club.

The Portuguese centre back has been a key figure in the team's rise out of League One to the top of the Championship, and has now extended his stay at St. Mary's until 2015 following on from a number of other key players who agreed new terms in the summer.

Fonte joined the club two years ago from Crystal Palace and settled quickly into life at Saints, establishing himself at the heart of the defence which reached the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final where he turned out at Wembley just three months after his arrival at the club.

Consistency has been they key word with his performances. In last season's promotion winning campaign he played 48 times and notched seven goals, including a dramatic last minute strike to earn a 2-1 success at Brighton.

José made the step back into the Championship this season, and has been one of the first names on the team sheet as the team has risen to the top of the table.

He has been an ever present in the league so far this season, partnering each of Aaron Martin, Dan Seaborne and latterly, Jos Hooiveld with whom he has struck up a solid understanding with in the heart of defence.

Executive Chairman Nicola Cortese has moved to tie the defender down to a new deal before he entered the final year of his contract, which was due to expire at the end of next season.

"It was a very easy decision and I am extremely happy to have signed," Fonte told BBC Radio Solent.

"This is the only place I want to be and is one of the happiest days of my life."

"The chairman is doing a great job, the manager is doing a great job and all the staff are doing a great job. We are having a great season and this is the place to be," he added.

With Hooiveld signing permanently, we definitely have the centre backs we need in place for this season. Fonte and Jos are going from strength to strength, and with Martin as a back up, and not forgetting Seaborne when he's fit and even Harlee Dean (who's been getting rave reports on loan), we're quite strong in this department. If we go up? Yes, sign a new CB in the summer, but I'm very pleased with what we have. It aLso seems that Jos and Jose like playing with each other too, which is inmportant.

Absolute quality - can't express how happy I am being a Saints fan at the moment when solid players come out with quotes like this.

My Crystal Palace mate is still gutted about Fonte leaving always considered him Prem quality

Great news for many reasons. It shows our best players want to be here long-term, it shows the club is looking to the future, it shows us impatient fans that things really do happen behind the scenes (not all deals are done in the press!), assuming this new deal was at a better wage it shows we're sound financially and it shows that NC and NA are doing what's best for the club now and in the future.

Good times.

The only worry for me. I know i'll get shot for saying this but without progress the contracts we must be offering, even with our crowds, will be unsustainable.

I hope you don't get shot as it's a very reasonable concern. Let's hope that this isn't a risk, but a sign that we will back our own chances of success and invest to make that happen. It starts with getting the foundations in place (all key players signed up) and hopefully continues with strengthening the first team to help us progress.

Or, perhaps, my half-full glass is now overflowing...

Got to laugh at yet more gushing praise of our chairman. It seems no one can help but mention what a great job he is doing when a press release is made on the OS.

You have to wonder why the Manager doesn't get mentioned as the one involved in the deal. Anyone would think the clubs's media dept have to mention NC in all the major releases to help massage the massive ego..........Just a thought......

Not sure why. Surely the contract would be such that it provides different remuneration depending on where we are. Much like Lowe (spit) inserted a clause in most players contracts to reduce pay if we were relegated, so would NC if we are promoted. It really is not difficult to budget based on various outcomes.
