Your 2011 Football Memories

I share many of the sentiments and events listed above but for me Ipswich was a milestone, an exorcism too.

I went to see Saints v Ipswich at Portman Road with a beautiful but Ipswich-supporting girlfriend in the seventies when they were at their best and we were humiliated 7-0. Killed the relationship and left a scar that was finally erased by the football that we played that night. Of course all the fears came flooding back when they pulled back those two goals but we were just magic...I'll never forget the Morgan 'dink' that put Lallana in for the 4th, the 5th was exorcism over.

I echo ColinJBs comments..sad though it may come across but my whole daily life is a cheerier place when we're doing well - long may it continue!

Orient away awesome atmosphere ! Even Lambert commented " I don't know how our fans get so many tickets it was like playing at home " , Plymouth away enough said ! And wallsall at home ole ole ole ole going up up up ,followed by the pitch invasion in which my klinsman caused a ****ed shoulder and 7 months of pain but it was worth it ! Roll on 2012

Just reminded me of a quote from the film adaptation of Nick Hornby's 'Fever Pitch.'

Football has meant too much to me, and come to represent too many things. See, after a while, it all gets mixed up in your head, and you can't remember whether life's **** because my team is **** or the other way around.

It is amazing how much Saints can effect your mood!

And i'm still gutted that I didn't go to that game at Portman Road!!

Great thread!

A couple that stand out for me:

MK Dons at home - When Barnard went through on the keeper, it felt like the whole crowd just sucked the ball into the net with pure adrenaline. A few seconds later the net rippled and the noise was incredible.

Orient away - Barnard's clincher and more great scenes. Such a tense afternoon and God only knows how they didn't equalise about 3 or 4 times. Looked and sounded like 3 quarters of the crowd were Saints fans, great day out.

Ipswich away - The first half was the best 45 mins of football I've seen a Saints side play live. They couldn't get near us.

little moments - that injury time defending against MK Dons, Kelv punched the ball into Millbrook, Lallana ran himself into the ground blocking crosses and then Barnard headed off over the hills and we nailed the game by showing great fighting spirit under pressure.

At Orient, watching the cross find its way to Barnard who said 'thank you very much, we'll have three points!'

I knew it was going to happen then.

Listening to Solent when we scored the first at Plymouth.

Great bit of simple commentary, he just screamed 'Lambert', and we all knew what had happened.

The demolition of the big names in the Championship.

But overall, what a year!

Wow. :o

Let's hope 2012 can match it - but first, let's finish it in style.

It has been alluded to but Lee Barnard thundering down to the corner in the last minutes of the MK Dons game just to keep the ball in a "safe" part of the pitch. He strained every sinew and used all his strength to get there first and prevent the ball going back to the other end. It epitomised the team ethic that now runs through our team. That was a season changing game. Fabulous stuff.

Living 2 minutes from Exeter's ground Rickie's winner there was nice.

Bournemouth away

Going ballistic at work when Fonte scored

Plymouth away and especially Lambert's penalty was amazing

Kissing Rickie on the pitch after Walsall

De Ridder's equaliser against Reading, sat right next to their support which was appaling all game. Being down to 10 men and 1-0 down and bringing it back to 1-1 was priceless.

Lambert's header at the Skates. Being stood on my seat in the backrow gave me a great view of everything that happend afterwards and I can honestly say that I've never been so impressed with our support.

That would be one of mine too. I was under where the Sky Pundits were, on the right hand side looking at the pitch. There fans were awful and even at 1-0 down it was all us making the noise.

Brilliant thread. The pivitol moment though, for me, was a year ago yesterday.

28/12/10, Huddersfield at home. We weren't in great form at all going into the game, and 1-0 down after a few minutes IIRC. Attacking throw-in on the left, Lambo turns his man, hits it on the volley, boom 1-1. We went on to win 4-1, and then the first 4 games of 2011, scoring 15 goals. We drew the next game 0-0 with Notts County, and then won the lot at home after that. Between the Huddersfield game and the end of the season, we picked up 61 points out of 78.

Set up a brilliant rollercoaster 2011. The ones that stick with me:

Man utd (h) - showed what we could do, was very proud of the lads

Walsall (a) - showed that sometimes you can be SO dominant, but it's just not going to be your day. Shocking ground & support

Bompey (a) - couldn't make it, but nearly crashed the car celebrating the Deano's goal going in. Brilliant.

Franchise (h) - What a turnaround

Brighton (a) - Huge win

Plymouth (a) - Couldn't go. Gutted to miss it. Brilliant seeing the highlights and celebrations

Walsall (h) - Win was never in doubt, brilliant day.

Could never have guessed we'd do this well this season.

- Smashing Leeds, Birmingham, West Ham & Middlesbrough at home, some brilliant performances.

- Lambert being top boy.

- Schteve's late goal at Reading - the worst injury I've had at football.

- Skates being sh*t scared of us d*cking them now.

- Brighton (and mainly Gus) hating the fact that we're far too good for them.

One for the new year - hopefully improve on my away record of seeing us pick up 2 points from 5 game this season.

Bart muffing up the winning run against Blackpool - I've only managed to get to three games this season, and I was unfortunate enough to witness that. And in the same game, Lambert heading the equaliser in injury time to send me into perhaps the biggest celebration I've ever done at SMS.

Beating Bompey and knowing it was going to be our season.

Muttering away in amazement at how well we were playing against Man Utd just before Chaplow smashed the ball home.

Getting smashed in Sheffield on the night Saints beat Plymouth and singing Saints songs at 3 in the morning.

First hearing the dirty skate bastards song at the Walsall game.

Seeing Saints top a division for the first time ever.

Going ape**** when Lambert scored against the skates.

How could i almost forget this for sheer LMFAOness.

I was actually worried about that programme cover as it appeared a bit Lowe-esqe.

The year has been so good though; at the beginning of the season, I looked at the fixtures and tthought "I can't really see any teams we can beat" now I generally think there are few we cannot (still a wee bit worried about some of the fixtures left but I'm sure we'll have bleedin good go at them COYRs!)

Best memories of 2011 for me were Forte's magic 20 minutes against MK, the wonderful final 10 at Brighton after their cheating and timewasting worked against them, getting outed as The9 by a fellow forum member at the Griffin pub before the Brentford match, our first 70 minutes at Barnsley when we were amazing, the final whistle against West Ham, and taking the lead at Fratton.

Oh, and thanks to this thread, I've remembered I quite enjoyed singing "you're our second favourite club" at the Bournemouth fans after we casually brushed them aside. The "Scummer Holiday" convoy to Fratton was a laugh as well.

On a personal note for me it's been about rediscovering away days, if we do go up i'm going to miss the affordable close away days that have really added to this feeling of a club on the rise. Part of what's been great about 2011 is feeling we're a big club again (relatively speaking), not just through winning but through filling other people's grounds for them and seeing the animosity towards us from other teams. Long may that last.
