Saints 2-0 Palace - Reactions

Yet again we seem to concede double the freekicks the opposition do despite having more of the ball and being on the offensive more. Are we dirty or was today's ref another w***er in black?

I think that it is simply that Refs favour defenders when there is any hint of an infringement. Both Lambert and Guly had fouls given against them that left them scratching their heads wondering what on earth they had done wrong.

If you didn't enjoy that or think we were very good, "Football" might not be the sport for you and certainly "Saints" aren't the right team for you.

I'm afraid that is about as good as it gets.

We totally dominated our opposition, created numerous chances, scored two goals, played some fantastic football, limited them to three very weak (Never going in) shots on target, were always in complete control and bossed the game from start to finish and tactically were light years ahead of them.

I worrry for some of our fans, what we are seeing right now is as good as we have had it or likely to have it for a long time.

Just enjoy...... Oh and we were brilliant today

Agree with all of this. I get concerned that we are so spoiled by success this year that players are no longer permitted to make mistakes. To me, in the first half especially, we played the fastest, crispest passing football that I have ever seen us play. Palace could not get near the ball and the statistics at half time for them of 0 shots on target from 0 shots said it all. All of the team played their full part in this, including Guly StScottoftheNortham's ravings notwithstanding. Sorry Scotty, but whatever Guly's weaknesses are, we are generally a better team with him than without him and NA and his coaching staff obviously believe that too. Has it occurred to you that perhaps the reason why he stayed back on the halfway line was because the CMs had gone forward and he stayed back as cover? I actually have no recollection of that passage of play but that was the first thing that crossed my mind from your description. Lazy is NOT a word that you can attach to Guly these days. I saw no evidence of it today.

From the BBC

Possession

Southampton 52%

Crystal Palace 48%

We had a lot more than 52% possession today, Palarse barely had the ball! Thought it was more like 65%-35%.

Our passing today was f*cking brilliant by all accounts, we haven't passed the ball about like that at home for a few weeks and it looks like our team is filled with confidence again.

For those of you creaming yourselves over this result, I think the opposite. Yes, we deserved to win in the end but the performance was not that of a team at the top of the table and unbeaten at home. We gave the ball away on numerous occassions and invited Palace to run at us. Palace should have had a penalty at 1-0 early in the second half and up until we scored again, I feared that we would concede. Too often the simple pass is not made and we play ourselves into trouble and a better team would have pinished us. However, two well taken goals by Guly were the difference and hopefully we'll start playing again as we did against the likes of Middlesborough, Watford and Brighton soon. It's great to be top and we are there on merit but let's not get complacent and delude ourselves that this was a great performance ...... it wasn't. As for the crowd, from where I was in the Kingsland, I thought our support was ok for a sterile Boxing Day fixture!

sorry, but that is absolutely bollix

That means Middlesborough go second. When Pardew went I wanted either Adkins or Tony Mowbray for the job - now 1st and second in the Championship, go me....

Think this might not be a blip and Middlesborough turn out to be our biggest threat for the rest of the season.

sorry to say got in an argument today with some "once a season family". spent all game moaning how we kept the ball etc without gaining any ground.put up with the cra* coming out of dad and granddads mouth for first half but finally had to say "tell you what mate why don't you save your money and stay home and watch the telly because the club is better off without your support"

give me 3000 on the bubble to pompey to pr*cks like that, ruined my day

And whack Hooiveld round the face after losing the ball in the second half. Can't believe he got away with that, but I seemed to be the only person that noticed it.

Zaha got Fox booked as well didn't he?? Anyway Zaha is probably just waiting for next monday to sign for some mid-table no hoper PL side, can't expect him to put in much effort for Palarse now.

Turned out to be a good day. Stretched the lead a bit just when it had dwindled to a point. We played good crisp passing football, but Nigel also seemed to have worked out a bit of extra width would undo Palace rather than passing it around completely like we normally try to do. Morgan and Cork were brilliant today, broke down everything and created good attacking platforms. Guly took his two goals well, and looked a lot better than at Nottarf Krap. Jos and Jose were composed and commanding. Lambert won a lot in the air and pulled the defence away from Guly. Lallana looks to be getting back to his best. De Ridder looked good, fast and committed despite a couple of wayward crosses. Frazer and Fox provided extra width and good accurate balls. Fox had Zaha in his pocket. Kelvin had nothing to do.

Guly's finishing and his increased commitment to defending was good to see today, though he still goes missing.

De Ridder looked vastly improved, especially defensively.

If that was 52% possession my name is Jan and I'm ready to play the kids and emulate Ajax from the 70s!

Palace were never in the game and the first half was one of the most assured and dominant displays I've seen this season.

The job was to take three points with the minimum of effort and to be ready to go again on Friday.

10 out of 10.

I've enjoyed 2011. :)

Birmingham look utter utter dross, don't think we can bank on them doing us any favours today.

This is why we are top of the league, we are very good, and the rest of the pack are utter dross. Nothing to fear from anyone, today has been a good day, 3 horse race now with Cardiff and Hull getting beat and Brum now so far behind even with games in hand. We've had a little blip and still are 3 points clear, 8 points clear of 4th and 12 points clear of 7th place.

Good win against a decent side! One negative for me today was our support. Completely outsung by the 3K Palace fans, it was embarrasing. About 5 minutes after we went 1-0 up. The ground was deafingly silent, as it took them a few more minutes to get back behind their team. Embarrasing that the loudest song (sung by the most peole at one time ) was STEEEEVE wen SDR got on the ball. Our support although good in numbers, was awful in terms of noise and support for our team, Like we were 2 nil down and bottom, not 2nil up and top. If this is how its going to continue as we progress as a club on the pitch, Id rather be abck in League one with 17k fans turning up to vocally support the team..from today's noise, we do not deserve a team playing as well as ours is at the moment. Please everyone prove me wrong on Friday and sing your ****ing hearts out for the lads! FFS COYR!

Were you at the game? Seriously? You are totally wrong in my oppinion

Yep, tbf during the first half of that game it just looked like a ''keep the score'' down routeen from birmingham, there was only one winner. Their 2nd half was better though, I still don't rate either side too much tbf. I think WHU are abysmal to watch and not very effective either at the moment.

They have some good players who should be doing much better than they are tbf. I don't think some of their players benifit from ''big sam's '' way.

Let's not forget that they have a tricky away game at Derby next, and are without Nolan, Mcaartney, Fabuert, Meite....etc, there are more but I can't remember all their missing players!

i am as frustrated as anybody when Guly has his bad moments. but his goals regularly win us games, and if NA thinks he is good enough to start every week, well that is good enough for me.

thought we were excellent against a good, tough to break down, palace side.Thought this might be a frustrating one today, but a fully deserved win. top of the league after half the season, and playing great football.

In my time, over 40 years watching, we have never had results or a league position like this. Happy days.

Well you can only beat the pile of turd that's put in front of you, and that's what we did, comfortably if unspectacularly.

Credit to Morgan and Jos today in particular, Jos looked in complete command and Morgan was prompting and keeping possession.

Would like to see us put these games to bed a bit earlier and really cut loose, would be nice to do that on Friday and go 6 pts clear, but Bristol should offer more up front than Palace.

Time to turn up the heat, 3 pts on Friday, then sort the away form out starting at our old friends at Brighton, and take the division by the scruff of the neck.

All that Zaha did for them today was moan and throw tantrums on the floor, seemed alot like Max Gradel.
amazed he was not booked for the first incident. Not sure about the second.

He looks a very good player to me. I can see why Newcastle are linked. He's strong, skillfull and has pace. He beat Fox, Morgan and Lallana on the turn, but all three gave everything to ensure he could not run free.

and he wasted pretty much everything...he saw a lot of the ball (for palace) and zero end product

I'm sure it was just an off day as lallana looked dodgy too

Wasn't able to follow the game today but been reading a few tinternet reports and it sounds like we were impressive. Good stuff, I hope it doesn't paper over the cracks of needing new players in January, but I see Adkins did say he was looking to strengthen.

On to the Bristol game which I will be at. Yay.

you are right there wasn't end product, but the rest of the side was ****e so he never found himself in space to really show his stuff. Also we defended brilliantly against him. We clearly recognised the potential threat and did a job on him. He impressed me though, in a similar way Phillips did last season. If we went up this is the kind of talent we should break the bank for.

Walking away from the ground with some friends we were commenting how quiet it had been, but all agreed probably because it had been such a routine win, even if the football was great at times. I can't remember any really misplaced passes and Morgan was a sheer joy to watch, with Cork much improved on his recent performances from what I've gleaned from internet streams and Saints player. De Ridder's defensive contribution was much improved (I noticed NA congratulating him), and people should give Guly a break; he sometimes takes a breather but I suspect if you looked at the yardage he covers it would be pretty high, I'm sure the club know the stats..

Adam and Rickie seemed a bit below par, but they're always still a danger. With only three days off until the next game it was good to win at a canter and the best bit is, I got my ticket for Friday today and won't be driving afterwards.. I reckon the atmosphere will be a bit better.:-)

Do not agree with this at all. We made a decent outfit look ordinary. We nullified Clyne and Zaha, two of the best talents on the championship, and didn't give Murray a sniff. In fact the opponents didn't create a single chance.

We created a few and two that were so good that we scored.

We dominated possession. We ran the game throughout and because of it were comfortable.

We kept a clean sheet and never looked stretched.

We entertained the fans with some great passing, plenty of movement and good football.

We looked like a top of the table side if you ask me.

This ^^^^. Best summary of the night.

Like i've said all along play morgan and cork together without the crap diamond and we'll be fine. Hammond has been our weakest link and now i hope NA see's it and keeps that partnership. De Ridder's pace is what we have missed, someone who gets the balls and runs at the defence. My only problem we have, as i see it, is Lallana, he really is not a proper left midfielder his best position is a free role behind the striker/s so he can pull defenders left and right and make runs through the centre. We need a formation to suit him in that position.

This is how it got to be in the premier league. Often, we were outsung by the opposition fans - who'd bought tickets in the home end!

That was brilliant - showed how much it meant to get back to winning ways. I love the team spirit this squad is showing.

It's genuine as well, not the usual ''oh let's just show the fans that we care'' **** that we've been used to in previous years. This group is really close. And that's probably 50% of the reason we're top.

Completely agree, which is why (although they are necessary) we need to be careful to recruit the right sort of players not just recruit them for the sake of it in Jan.
