Title or Le Tiss?

An argument between me and my brother this weekend occurred when I posed the question - "Would you rather have seen Saints win a Premier League title and MLT had never existed let alone played for us OR have it the way it has been - survival, relegation etc, but the memories of all his goals?"

He opted for the title, which in my mind would make us like Blackburn. I wouldnt swap the memories of MLTs magic for anything.

the world is full of ..." what if's."

Goes along with those threads about ..what if MLT had played in the same side as (say) Lambert, Ron Davies, or Mick Channon. etc, etc,

The fact is that (if lucky) you only get 50% ball possession in any game, and scoring chances are few - so that if all these "star" players WERE in the same side, they would probably have had careers much less memorable than they eventually did - (if it meant playing in the same team).

As it was, MLT and Ron Davies helped keep their sides up and free from relegation, whereas Derek Reeves, Channon and Lambert scored many goals that helped their particular sides get promoted. However, I have been fortunate enough to have seen all (the above play), and was glad of it.

The only IF..I would put forward would be that all of these players (did) and would have benefitted more, had they had the service from wingers like Terry Paine and John Sydenham.

Can you imagine it, Paine to the goal line and crosses for Lambert to head home. Now i don't think RL is as good in the air as Super Ron was, (and yes i did see him play many times) but i do believe that if we had an out & out winger and they got used to playing together then RL would score even more goals.

Ahh but then if we played with an out and out winger would MIGHT play the ball through the middle less so RL MIGHT score less goals from that way? Plus we MIGHT get less penalties as out winger MIGHT run to the by line and cross rather than players running into the penalty area. We MIGHT be less secure down the flanks defensively so we MIGHT concede more meaning we MIGHT spend more time on the defensive and less time attacking which MIGHT lead to us winning less games and scoring less.

If saints had won the league in '83 we would have only been remembered as the team that accidentally won the league while Liverpool and Manure were taking a nap. You have to win more than once to be properly remembered as a good team...........So I'd take Le Tiss by a country mile, please.

How old are you?

Ok smartarse - please enlighten me as to what the point of supporting this football club is? I have naively spent 40 odd years supporting this football club because I want to be entertained, I want to see the spectacular, I want to see the controversial, I want to see the unexpected. Winning can be a happy by-product but it isn't the be-all and end-all for me, so to say I have seen MLT spend near-on 15 years in a Saints shirt definitely rates higher than a flukey title win (remember this was speculation, and maybe if we had gone on to win 3 titles my answer may have been different!)

what a silly thread by its nature it seems to say we would only win the title without Le Tiss (not sure why) However without him we wouldn't have been there in the first place to have a chance of winning it!

Anyone who saw Le Tiss at his peak knows we were privalaged to have such a talented player for so many years and he has left us with great memories.
