Here we go - Maynard

Not a great surprise to me - City haven't really managed to pull away from the drop-zone and are very unlikely to be in the promotion mix later on this season.

Bearing in mind he's only got 6 months left on his current deal I think £3 to £3.5m would be enough to secure his services in January. If we could sign him that would be absolutely brilliant, but we will have to wait and see.

I guess it is not only the fee (inc signing on fees and agent commission) but the wages

Pay him top whack and it upsets the current equilibrium in the Dressing Room

How much would it cost to get a foreign mercenary in the mould of Demba Ba in.

Always a risk (eg Delgado) but they do come cheaper

Leicester are paying Beckford £35,000 per week and will need to off load him.

According to an agent on twitter Beckford is looking to leave Leciester in Jan. The agent has a good track record or transfers so likely Leciester will need a replacement if they do sell him.

Would hope we were in for him, if the price was reasonable. However, I think that a number of Prem teams could also be interested: Wigan, Norwich, Swansea, QPR, Blackburn, Bolton and Wolves all may be in for him. Plus a number of C'ship teams. Who doesn't need a pacy striker with a decent goalscoring record, available at a knock-down of the market value due to the length of contract?

It will all depend on how much we bid, how much we are willing to pay in wages and the lad's ambition. The article states he's wants Prem footy, yet I'd question whether going to some of the clubs I've listed above was a good career move. However, as we all know, money talks in footy...

Really do not rate Beckford at all..

Despite his reputation, when Leeds came down to SMS 2 years ago Jaidi just outplayed him and he spent the entire game on his arse.

Maynard on the other hand would be a good acquisition and better than Sharp IMHO..

Bottom line is if he is willing to conform to the team ethic and be on the bus then worth a punt, but if he wants to be Billy Big Wotsits or a bit mardy like Puncheon then that is a hell of a lot of money to spend on a reserve team player.

see what you mean but I don't get the impression he is like that. After all if he was just a mercanary type he would have gone to LCFC in the summer.

Without stating the obvious, Sharp and Maynard are different players and each has different strengths and trade-offs.

Sharp gives you back-up for Lambert and the option to play alongside him; Maynard would work well with Lambert but couldn't play instead of him. Both are instinctive finishers but Sharp gives you strength and ability in the air while Maynard gives you pace in behind. We rely heavily on crosses -Richardson is our leading assist maker- and direct balls into the front man; but we've allowed teams, especially away from home to press us high up the pitch because we aren't the quickest team. Would a pacy winger -another position on our wish list- offset the need for pace up top? Can Lambert maintain his fitness and form for the rest of the season, making a back-up less urgent?

In sum, do we reinforce our existing strengths or add great variety to our play? There are no easy answers - possibly we bring in two different strikers. If that's the case, it doesnt make sense to buy, say, both Sharp and LJ.

Erm....no that is not strictally speaking correct as you make him sound an ideal like for like for Lambert. Billy Sharp does not give you ability in the air. He is is 5ft 9. Maynard is 5ft 11.5" according to wiki. Maynard has been playing as lone striker this season and according to his manager does his work around the 18 yard box, unlike Lambert who drifts wide and deep at times - which would be ok with someone like Maynard essentially goal-hanging. Lambert and Sharp would be a classic big un little un combination for a 442 formations - an ideal like for like replacemwent fo Connolly imo rather than Lambert. Maynard possibly allows a little more flexibility to that in keeping with Nigels mobile team formations. Both are goalscorers, but Maynard is regarded as the quicker of the two. If i had to choose id say Sharp would slot in easiest but Maynard would give us an extra outlet we dont have at present and for times when we are being found out - pace. For that reason id pick Maynard though both are very good.

He turned down Leicester already this season, he said he didnt want to play for them.

he did not want to play for anyone back then....I bet this jan is slightly different..I can see us going for him...just depends if leicester offer silly money for a striker with 6 months left on his contract

I would not be surprised if we havnt gone in for him already

We won't get Maynard. We like to do our deals in secret but BC will do everything they can to get the most money for him, to do that they need to make Leicester and West Ham know about it so they offer more than us which I am sure they will.

Maynard has said he doesn't want to join Leicester, so unless the problem was SGE (understandable) then I would be suprprised if they followed up. I sincerely hope we do not spend silly money on a player out of contract in the summer. Clearly we didn't consider him value for money in the last window, and would be surprised therefore if we follow up. I think Sharp is more likely target though I think he is more likely to go to Ipswich.

Give us a striker who's not afraid to have a pop from middle distance and looks for every opportunity to snap a shot off wherever possible. A striker who's selfish in a good way sort of thing, someone in the Jermaine Defoe mould. Sharp and Maynard would both be terrific.

In fairness to him, he got a decent amount of goals in the Prem.

People are quick to forget Sharpe's spell at Sheffield United, the only club of similar size to Saints he has played at in his career. He played 51 times for them in 3 years, scoring 7 goals. I'm not saying this makes him a bad player, but it should definitely be factored into any decision/bid we make

Only if he has a lack of ambition or doesn't back himself to cut it at a higher standard.

Am I alone in admitting that I don't see nearly enough of Maynard, Sharp etc to make an informed opinion? It's hard enough making your mind up about some existing Saints players who you see at least occasionally but I find it almost impossible with players I've seen for a few short minutes of on the FL show and with little or no knowledge of the team they play in and how they play. Love to contribute but I'd be bull****ting.
