Thought they were appalling today. Preferred to focus in on player's faces when there were important passages of play, and pointlessly changed the angle on numerous occasions when the usual broadcast position would have been much better.

Give me itv any day of the week.

A bit like saying you'll take syphilis over a graze. ITV are woeful at covering any sport.

The fact is in a live televised game, its standard practice to do shots like that. At least you didn't have repeat shots of the moon or planes arriving at Heathrow like there was for Fulham v Odense.

I think 'standard practice' needs to be revised a tad.

didn't help that the main camera seemed to be on top of the spiniker tower!

Yeah sadly, Fratton being as **** as it is, the BBC had to erect temporary camera positions out of scaffolding, and were actually on top of the stands themselves. Equipment had to be hoisted up there using a rope and pulley.

It may be standard practice but it's poor practice. We really don't want to see long lingering camera shots of some ugly ginger sod especially when the ball's in play. Too much standard practice all round with that coverage. Very poor commentary and

lazy journalism which resorted far too often to cliche. The Skate was the only one that knows anything about the FL.

Lazy journalism? Don't know about that. If you knew how much preparation went into doing a game like that, I doubt you'd be making such a remark.

Jake Humphreys the presenter was bloody awful though, as I've said on another thread he infuriated me at one point with his comment about our league position flattering us. That's just a load of old ********, no two ways about it.

Was it a comment or a question? If a comment, then lazy journalism like I said. If he'd done his homework he'd have known the dip in form is recent. If he knew anything about football he'd have recognised that the Skate's tactics throttled the life out of the match.

He's BBC's Formula 1 guy I think.....so I guess they are trying to find something else for the pillock to do.

Not sure football is gonna be it......reminded me of someone who had been to Adrian Childs School of Presenting.

He said it with such conviction and tone of voice that it sounded like a professional opinion, but it was a question, admittedly. I was too busy swearing and shouting to hear Claridge's response, which was apparently very good.

Claridge was, as he has been all season, pretty fair about us, if anything a bit flattering towards us.

Doesn't surprise me, looked very shaky on TV!

It was pretty poor all round, but it meant I could watch it at home, so not the end of the world. Even if some of the in-game commentary was very pro-skate as well...at one point I heard something along the lines of "We're just starting to push forward a bit more now..."

Shearer just sounded like a brain-washed premier league pundit, who doesn't appreciate where his football roots were/are

You didnt see the start of the show then when he said coming to Southampton as a 15 year old was the best thing he could have done and how he learnt his football education here then ?

Humphrey may be better known for F1 these days, but he was much better known for football until 2 years ago, presenting Football Focus and Final Score many times. He's a Norwich supporter though so probably has little knowledge of football. He was quite dull today though, granted, but then the whole presenatation was dull. Bit like the Sky Championship presentations, Sky are only any good when it is a top PL game, and ITV have always been ****e at best. Shame really that they got Shearer as the "Saints" player, because it was quite clear that he has no great affection for Saints and had little or no clue about us this season, whereas Claridge as alwasy was very complimentary to Saints and proves over and over again that despite what many on here think that he is actually a very intelligent and fair summariser. As for Martin Keown, please BBC get someone with some personaility.

i think the coverage changed after about 10mins, every piece of action had someone mouthing abuse, we can all lip read. Everytime lalana took a corner in the first half the guy in the wheelchair was 2ft away shouting ''your xxcking xxit'' after that everything went long shot. We are talking mid day on a sunday afternoon. i think the producer was covering his ass, as for the sound filter for the songs, non-existant.

But he also made it quite clear that he had little or no regard for us since then and had no idea about us this season. I gather from the coverage today that he was also not very prolific when he was with us. If that was the case why did Blackburn pay so much money for him? 43 goals from when he was 17 to 21 is not a bad return in my opinion. Shearer has one love, the Barcodes.

I thought the same thing, the image selection was hopeless and interrupted the flow of play completely. Fortunately we didn't have audio as the Utd vs QPR game took priority in the bar. Having said that I'm delighted I got to see the game even if it was on pixelated and blurry at times. Roll on the return game at SMS. Top of the league!

Well done to Alan Shearer for pretending he's still some sort of Saints fan, but I'm far from convinced. Even accepting that the natural choice (MLT of course) works for Sky these days, surely the BBC could have found a more convincing representative of Hampshire's biggest club - Mick Channon or get Claus Lundekvam over perhaps.

Couldn't afford him I dare say. Shearer and co get a lot of money for their appearances, and then they'd have to fly Claus in from Norway and back.

Agreed a very poor show from the Beeb - disappointing

Unless I'm much mistaken couldn't even be ar5ed to give out the 'team sheets' before the match

I nearly had a coronary yelling at the screen in frustration at the crappy coverage. 'lets have a close up of the ugly goon Applethingy' whilst the ball is in play. Unbelievable! Give me Sky every time.

I was yelling at the director as well BUT if you watch sky you should know they all do the same. Forever showing replays, sometimes of meaningless incidents when the ball is in play and having to cut back to the live action quickly when the crowd noise tells them that something is happening. After a goal is scored you hardly ever see the following kick off, sometimes they don't show throw ins etc-just too busy showing off all the angles for replays. My new year wish (after promotion) to telivised football-show the ball whenever it is in play please

They didn't put the team up or discuss selection/tatics before game. Second half showed the teams but not the subs, awful coverage

I am pleased to see this thread and that so many agree that the coverage was dire !

I was watching with my daughter and we both commented all through the match just how amateurish the camera work and the commentary was !!

Sky beat them hands down, no doubt about it !!

I don't think there's any doubt Humpries either hadn't done his homework or is really biased against the Saints. I tend to think it was the former. Very obvious he prefers the glamour of Formula 1 and it was left to Claridge to place the Saints performance in context, "they've played better than this", which, he's done fairly on the FLS whenever I've seen him.

Shearer performed as he does on MOTD, totally anodyne, little insight, and, again, poor preparation.

As a Crawley boy who occasionally confesses to an allegiance to CTFC he's maybe got a Brighton/Lawrenson type downer on Saints?

I wish that they had some one else than Shearer, he justs didn't have the oomth or the knowledge. He even admitted that his opinion was based on this one game.

In answer to the above they could have got say Graham Murty, he's done abit of punditry, Jason Dodd, my old friend Franny Banali, the list is endless if they had only put some thought into it.
