CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Proud of the way our players stood up to the intimidation today and all-in-all I thought we were clearly the better team - by a distance. Can't wait (but will have to) to get them back to St Mary's, something tells me we're going to rip them a new one.
ericofarabia Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 have'stolen access via EoA's puter. Thought we gave them a lesson in how football should be played today. Disappointed we didn't go on to tear them a new one that we deserved, but on the positive side we will only lose 1point when their results are expunged for going bust. Watched the game in the home pub pf the Scousers & many of them were keeping an eye on us after they went 2-0 ahead and they were VERY appreciative of our football. So overall, shouldda couldda won but didn't lose. Will take that. IF only we'd had Chappers or DC & width on the right we could have torn them one. They should be very worried they offered nothing apart fro the goal Dubai_Phil on Eric's puter after too many Kilkenny's

MatthewStiles Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 PFC were extremely negative, just Kitson on his own up front, I don't think Davis will have many quieter days. However, they did make it difficult for Saints, the game seemed very congested. As already pointed out, Guly had a shocker. Not just the goal, he kept on giving the ball away. Still Saints are top and with people like Lambert and Lallana we can beat anyone in this league.

Still Saints are top and with people like Lambert and Lallana we can beat anyone in this league. You're spot on about it being congested. Neither team had any real out and out width, and I think if we had that in our side (I.e we still had Chambo) it would have beena different game, and we'd have given Mattock, who I think is incredibly dodgy, a more difficult afternoon than he was given. The middle 4 we are playing with at the mo are too central and games become bitty and congested in the middle of the park. Get an Albert Adomah type player in January who will pick the ball up and beat players with pace down the flanks, that's what we miss.

Nexstar Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 First half was a non-starter, as we created absolutely nothing. The Skates rarely threatened in the opening exchanges, but more so than us. Second half we were by far and away the better team, but both defences had very good days and two mistakes saw the goals. I feel had De Ridder come on for Guly in the last 15-20 minutes then we might have nicked it with that extra energy on the counter. Some notable performances from all of the back line, added to Hammond, Cork, Lallana and Lambert. Overall not a bad result on the face of the league, considering the respective home/away forms. A good run over Xmas please.

rshephard3 Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Totally agree, you can tell with Guly what he's going to play like in the first 15 minutes usually. Had NA more faith in De Ridder I'm pretty sure Guly wouldn't have been on the pitch to NOT defend that corner. Having seen the effort from Guly for Wards header I can certainly see what people are saying. 100% is a minimum requirement of course. Any ideas why De Ridder seems not to be trusted by Adkins? Any ideas why De Ridder seems not to be trusted by Adkins? I'm not sure it's just Adkins. Does anyone remember a moment late in the Blackpool game when De Ridder hit a cross at Lambert but it was (only slightly) long? Rickie waved his arm and shook his head in disgust at SDR and I wondered at the time what was behind his clear contempt. Perhaps he's one of those players that fans tend to rate while the coaches and his fellow pros are much more sceptical.
teamsaint Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 We are clearly a bit off our best at the moment. but for all that we played some decent football in a tough atmosphere, and were seldom in trouble. Poopey have really decent home form, based on a solid defence so a point there is really not a problem. plenty of teams could have folded after the equaliser, so got to be happy really. Still on 2 points a game after a rather poor run. Just have to pick it up over the next few games.

scotty Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 I only heard the last ten minutes on solent, been at work all morning. It made me laugh, skate inbreds singing like they'd won the game instead of nicking a last gasp equaliser. If that utter tw*t mackrill really believes appleton set up his side to scrape a home draw against their local rivals and a side that had lost their last two away games that speaks volumes about their ambition. SNSUN Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Granted it was against the fishy fuggers, but had it been against anyone else, this is a good away point. We all wanted a win, but this wasn't a defeat, and that gives us the platform to smash them at SMS. With reinforcements, which it's obvious to everyone we need, we can do just that. Plus we're top at Christmas. And home on Boxing Day. So I'm happy.

It's no coincidence that we haven't really been the same team since 7 minutes into the Bristol City game at the end of November. The loss of Chappers was always worrying but our failure to adapt tactically is perhaps rather more troubling. Even today there was no real balance to pull them apart. eelpie Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Nigel's summing up is true of many of Saints recent performances: "You have to go and win the first and go and win the second ball. It's as simple as that." Too frequently recently Saints have backed off challenging for the ball. Earlier in the season they were hungrier to take the ball from the opposition. Now they are more often relying on collecting the ball from stray passes. That is why they drew against Blackpool who were allowed too much possession, and why we are drawing matches which we used to win.
Legod Third Coming Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Two things have contributed to our poor results. Chaplow getting injured, then persisting playing three pedestrian central midfielders who don't gel or offer any goal threat. I would say that was true of previous games but not this one. We created enough chances in the second half to have won comfortably. Guly was slow onto Lallana's through-ball, Lallana paused when he should have shot and Morgan really has to work on shooting accuracy. In previous games they have not worked well together, but today we were just undone by a hopeful ball and some poor keeping/defending. Either Guly or Kelvin could really have claimed that ball. The loss of Chappers was always worrying but our failure to adapt tactically is perhaps rather more troubling. Even today there was no real balance to pull them apart. What made us a good side before BC was the contrast, two from three solid in the middle movement and dynamism outside with Lambert and Guly feeding off it. Put Hammond, Cork and Schneiderlin in the same midfield slows us down and allows defences to consolidate, whereas before, we were ripping through them. CanadaSaint Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Schneiderlin doesn't do goals but that's all the more reason for Lallana to start doing them again. It was extremely frustrating to see him turn back after we carved out a clear opening for a vital second goal. We're doing that too often for my liking, and that's magnifying the danger that we'll fall back into a "style over substance" team fighting for a playoff place when we should be well clear at the top. Professor Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Expected more from Adkins. If he was trying to sit on a 1-goal lead by subbing Fox for Harding it certainlyt didn't work and NA knows well enough that team only one down is never out of the game. Thats when they say its the next goal that counts and a defensive swop sub is not an attempt to get the next goal. Three central MFs meant no threat down the right at all and not to make a change, even after they equalised, was very strange. Unless Connolly is fit by Jan, we need that new striker urgently and if SDR is not good enough to be a replacement for AOC, which it seems NA has decided he isn't, then we need a quality winger. Its no consolation to still be top by one point when it was 5 points not long ago and 8 points clear of third instead of the 3 it is now. If the club take the complacent line some fans take, we might be down to third, or worse, by the time people wake up.
