I'm starting to get concerned that we've become a "style over substance" team in the past month - especially without the direct aggression of Chaplow.

Just when we create an incisive opening, we stop, turn back and try to do it again, as Lallana did with his clear second half chance (one of many examples).

And there's a special hell reserved for players who turn in a disinterested - never mind gutless - performance in a derby game. Guly may never be forgiven for that.

Overall I'm sure that NA and the lads would take a point in Hindsight. There is no way they will get anything at St Mary's so 4 points off the skates won't be bad! Just feels like **** as we should have seen that out.

No wins in December but we're still top, transfer window round the corner and players to come back from injury. COYS!

1, He was slow to attack the ball

2, He turned his back to the ball

3, He had no interest is getting his head to the ball in case he got hurt

Have a second look tonight.

I've had a second look. I thought Kelvin's reaction was p*s-poor too.

Guly is just too inconsistent to be a regular first choice player and on his off days he is atrocious

Hammond has been poor as of late too, just doesn't contribute anything. Would definitely take him out of the side when Chaplow returns.

What, so the home crowd should start chucking abuse at him ?

Think a few people should cast their minds back to the Boro game...

odd game...very scrappy in the 1st half for large parts of the 2nd half we were far far better....again, we messed about with the ball around the area...lallana tried a turn too many instead of shooting. shneiderlin missed a great chance...guly brought a good save.................hooiveld was very good...........richardson was very good...........lambert was very good......lallana was good.......guly was utterly terrible.......

In the spirit of the Great Man:

Negative:

Poor corner given away by Harding and poor defending on the line by Guly

Positives:

We didn't lose to the fishy ones

We are top by a point going into 2 Xmas home games

5 times out of last 6 seasons team top going into Xmas has gone up

Lambert was immense

Hooiveld showed why we were right to buy him

Guly compounded a bad performance with that poor defending and I was wondering why he wasn't replaced at HT. Irrespective, mightily proud that apart from that moment we didn't bottle it and were the better team. Skates as always jammy, but we'll do them at SMS.

Not a bad day really, shame we couldn't hang on for the win but in fairness we were the much better team and should have had the game put to bed by the time the skates scored. If the Skates come to us and play like that we will kill them. Not a disaster ....but could have been better though I'd have taken a draw at the start of the day.

Lazlo78 - lots of fair points, but Guly should not have let Ward bully him like he did. He may not have clean won the ball but he sure as hell could have got in the way and prevented the goal, by being so half arsed he also gave Davis no chance. Chance to redeem himself after an absolutely dreadful performance too.

He'll get another chance at Palace on boxing day, so I'm not going to get on his back unless he shows the same lack of effort and bottle then.

Also having seen the last 3 away days, I cannot believe anyone still believes we don't need another decent forward and right winger - If we spend £8m on those two positions we go up (and collect £100m) if not it's going to be a huge struggle. Chance to see how much Cortsese wants it - we may never get another chance like it.

Holmes did as much as guly today!

Not true as Guly missed our best two chances constantly gave the ball away and didnt clear on the corner

Holmes even though he wasnt on the pitch was therefore much better

Such a shame. But I would have taken a point beforehand. Guly was very poor today, don't think he liked the atmosphere!!

On another note, the BBC coverage was awful, I just wanted to watch the game, not watch individual players for about 15 secs each time and watching needless replays about 4times in slow motion while the game is going on. I'm sure they make it crap because its a CCC game. It was so frustrating to watch.

LOL at the role reversal of you two.......

Give Guly a f**king break. Been great for the past few months and one poor game gets all the morons out in force to bash him around. Good point at fratton. The build up has taken our eye off the ball of recent weeks, lets come on strong after christmas. COYR!

A) Did I suggest that the crowd should start abusing him?

B) The Boro game was back in October.

Pretty rich, coming from you, Alps.

Yes it was dire.... coupled with the fact that other than Claridge all the pundits are so cuaght up in the PL that don't have a f ucking clue about clubs and players outside of the top flight...

Disagree

End of Nov

5 pts clear of Westham and 9 clear of third

Now

No win in 3, very poor away form, finding it difficult to make and convert chances, 5 points from last 5 games and no win in December

So now, 1 point ahead of Westham, 3 ahead of third and most importantly gving away a win at Fratton when we were in such a good position.

Maybe I will feel more positive tomorrow!

I think a portion of criticism today is justified. He hasn't been great for the past few months, he's had good games here and there, mixed in with awful games. He's a very patchy player and I'm not sure he's one for the away games.

Frustratingly we all know how talented he is, but he's one of those players that struggles in tight, niggly away games like that.

despite all the gloom for drawing away at your hated rivals.................who else thought we would be top at xmas back in august..?...............not me that is for sure......I will be a bit deflated if we dont sign a good striker with pace at least....throw that into the team and we could hang in there......

I don't understand why peolple don't want us to go up, that's absolutely mental. If we don't go up, there is a good chance of we'll lose a lot of our better players and face the disruption of having to try and replace them. If we do go up, we get £60m and have a fantastic chance of staying up considering the poor quality of the EPL. And if we don't stay up, we go down with £60m in the bank which will give us a better chance than "building" for another season in the NPC.

Absolute no brainer.

PS: We have enough players in our squad who can hack it in the EPL. 3-4 additions short of being competitive, we're not too far off Norwich's q

Hate to have a pop, but Guly plainly wasnt interested, should have been replaced!! can't forgive not giving 100%

Have stuck up for him many times but today he went missing in action.

We're in a great position, unbelievable really. Bit frustrated by our away results which aren't anywhere near the standard we need, but I'm sure they'll improve.

We have 2 good home games to come, and an away match at an injury and a suspension depleted brighton side. It could turn into a pretty good Christmas programme yet.

Think emotions are getting the better of some - thought Guly was ok, yes, should've done better for their goal, but wasn't as bad as some are saying. As a team we played some good stuff, but just weren't quite able to take the chances to earn the win. Frustrating and on the day disappointing, but in the great scheme of things, we're top of the league at Christmas despite our recent away form. We'll do them at home, and that'll do for me.

Well said Minty, as always the voice of reason !

Some of the comments on here are way over the top and we do not need to be making scapegoats after a game like that !

Top of the league at Christmas, how many of you would have been happy with that at the start of the season !

Come on Saints, onwards and upwards !!!!!

In fairness Guly looked no different today to how he always looks on the field. On a good day he plays like that scores and everyone loves him on a bad day he plays exactly the same doesn't score and everyone hates him........

We are so far above were I thought we would be this summer I can't get despondant. I'd still rather be top even by 1pt (after a tricky away derby) than not be......

Totally agree, you can tell with Guly what he's going to play like in the first 15 minutes usually.

Had NA more faith in De Ridder I'm pretty sure Guly wouldn't have been on the pitch to NOT defend that corner.

I still have a feeling that we'll find out how important Chappers is to us when he comes back.

With a bit of luck our bad spell is almost behind us - and we're still sitting top.

5 points from 15.

A threadbare bench.

Letting a lead slip through sloppy play (to give the corner away and defend it).

Time to start earning the money.

Of course I would have snapped up top at Xmas, just can't help but feel we've lost our way.

Posted

I was pretty annoyed de ridder never got 15-20 mins at least....Guly was a complete passenger...gave the ball away many times and struggled to get into the action............oh well, 1-1 at pompey, probably one of the hardest away games of the season IMO

I just don't think Adkins trusts De Ridder at all, especially when we're in a position of 1-0 up in a Derby game like that. Frustrating player who promised so much.

Of course I agree however, summer was then and now is now, I now have a lot more expectations (being greedy) hence my frustration (plus of course this was Poopey we are talking about)

Ok, could be worse I suppose. Hooieveld was brilliant I thought, again. Great signing he has been.

He was an absolute beast. Although he could have possibly done a bit better with the header in the leadup to the goal!!

He makes all the difference when teams line up to defend - he makes the run beyond our CF's - proper attacking MF.

Posted

A little perspective please.

Yes, Guly was b0llocks ad bottled the 'header' but Fonte(?) shouldn't have let Thorne have the header back across in the first place. The beauty of Guly is that he'll probably go score in the next game and everyone will scratch their heads in confusion.

Pompey were sh!t, and we'll p!iss all over them at St Mary's. They have no money to buy someone who actually knows what it's like to score a goal to replace that donkey Kitson and we're miles ahead of them at the top.

Lallana was quality, as was Cork and Hooiveld. Lambert - 1 chance, 1 goal. Not sure why Fox came off, surely a knock?!

Onto Palace, but 2 points dropped.

Posted

West Ham, Middlesbro, Hull, Leeds, Birmingham, Brighton and Blackpool not withstanding of course.

Not many teams are as **** at home as they were today, they wanted one point and they got one point.

The celebrations from them at the end told you as much.
