dune Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 I'm relatively happy with that. We were the better side, you could see that we had more quality. They were ecstatic with a home draw against us and that just shows how the tables have turned and how we have re-established our birthright of superiority over them. I was once against p/ssed off with Guly. He is a waste of space who gives it away more times than not. He thinks he's playing on the beach in Rio. Drives me crazy everytime i've seen him. It's as simple as that. He is good enough, away I think he is probably not the right player, but who do we have instead ATM ?? In this division I think he is a very good player, he makes space, finds players and normally works hard, you can usually rely on him to make something out of nothing. Derby matches are classically all form out of the window and it didn't come off, either way we are top at xmas, and didn't lose at the shed, the equaliser was a catelogue of errors. He seemed caught up in the decision to stay at the post or challenge where either or would have been a better outcome. It was a goal from nothing. We need a winger, another striker and perhaps a CB in jan, and we will be ok.

saintoli Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Very forgettable first half, but a lively second half. Some great play by Lallana, especially when he walked through 3 skates with the ball glued to his boot! The goal really woke us up and gave us the upper hand, whatever attacks they had were broken up with ease and turned into counters. Thought NA was a bit negative towards the end, looking to hold onto the 0-1, but that nearly always leads to trouble. I would have liked to see SDR come on for Guly with 10-15 mins to go as the skates were really on the ropes and i dont think they would have coped with the runs he makes. Guly had a 'mare for me though, just didn't seem that interested to make things happen. He can be so frustrating at times! I would have given anything to have DC on the end of that chance that Guly fluffed. Before kick off though, i would have settled for a point and i think the end result was pretty fair. As for people saying 'at the start of the season you would of bit someones hand off to be top by a point come Christmas', I can't agree with that. We are top on merit imo, and we have missed to many chances to strech our lead by poor performances. Everyone has a blip at some stage of the season, i'm just glad ours has come as we limp towards the transfer window. These last few games have highlighted the fact we have some big gaps in our squad which need addressing asap. Overall though, it's ours to throw away, just hope we don't. Lazlo78 Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Having let the game sink in a bit, I'll post a few more reactions: - three people quoted my defense of Guly's performance at the goal and kindly asked me to watch the replay again. Living abroad I can't see Beeb highlights, but I'll make sure to check it out on SaintsPlayer tomorrow - maybe I was too kind on our Brazilian. - I'm surprised that there was little or no controversy at all in the game! Compare this to the Brighton game etc. and today there were no major decisions to make for the ref, no bone-breaking tackles and no fights etc. Kitson is an ugly git, but he took some battles with Jos and Fonte and I was surprised to see the good nature of that battle - clapping hands, pat on shoulder etc. after their duels. I'm probably in the minority here, but personally I like it when the game is about the football and not about constantly having to deal with all sorts of controversies. - Hooiveld never looks really calm to me (I can't really put my finger on what it is but he looks a bit frantic(?) at times - not necessarily a negative thing though!), but he is really alert and gives everything he has. An honest battler and a good partner for the more assured Fonte.

Charlie Wayman Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 No hiding from this one, it was seen by the whole country. Drab and uninspiring about sums up our play. How can we hope to get promoted with this current aimless style of football. It is pointless saying that in the past five years all teams on top at Christmas were promoted, this is now and the reality of Saints in current form is that we are not good enough. No comfort at all in Pompey being abject - we knew that anyway - we should have wiped the floor with them and we didn't! Our lead has been whittled down to a single point and at the rate we are losing points now - back to 2 per game - we'll soon be overhauled by Middlesboro, Cardiff, Hull and West Ham who relentlessly grind out results. We need to buy a decent striker - yes! - but also a real match winning midfielder who can really make things happen and boss games to supplement the silky skills that are already there. St Marco Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 All in all you have to say other then a good 10-15min spell by us it was a pretty dire match. I felt our support was decent. Their support was a bit ****. When we scored they were very silent. A steward told me it was around 20k in there, didn't feel like it at all. First half was **** and i think both sides were just hoping not to lose. Both playing long ball and hoping either Kitson or Lambert got it. Second half was an improvement and i felt we dominated . They didn't look a threat at all. We tried to create chances and when they came we couldn't put them away. We deserved to lead and when Lambo scored that was one of the best momments i have had following Saints away anywhere. Suprised the stand didn't fall down! After that goal i think Adkins totally ****ed up. He should of brought on De Ridder because Pompey would of had to push people forward and we would of got them on the counter. We were in control and that outlay would of helped loads. Seeing Lambert on our left trying to run at 2 defenders was so frustrating. You could see he was not pleased either. He should of been in the middle for the crosses not on the wing, same goes for Guly, why the fook was he moved to the right? Guly should of been off after the goal and De Ridder on with Morgan pushing back into a sweeper for the last 5-10mins. By keeping a knackered and totally un-confident Guly on was just baffling to me. The same goes for the Fox sub. I thought he was doing well and don't get why he came off. Someone said he saw Adkins and him argue or something? They didn't threaten us at all and i think it was Harding who came on and caused the corner. Then nobody was picking up the pompey **** from the corner. We should be clearing those situations. Guly should be throwing himself at it, that is why he is paid like 8k a week or something. We were the better team and deserved to win. We showed some great football but like in the recent games it has been patchy. I think that this game shows we need to bring in a proper striker i.e Sharp to play alongside Lambert and we need a proper winger out on the right who can start every game because obviously Adkins doesn't rate De Ridder. A draw is not a bad result. But we have failed to win a game this month. They still have to come to ours and i think if we play like we did for that 10-15min spell we will destroy them. I just can't believe they scored as i thought they were ****.

He could (and maybe should) have scored twice if he could have headed it on target. His away performances of late have been poor. shurlock Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Pretty dire game - thought the wind was an important factor and we took better advantage of it in the 2nd half. Yet again, we produced f**k all down the left. And in the first half, could not count more than a few balls that were played to Guly or Lambert's feet - no wonder Guly struggles. Jos and Cork were my MOTMs. Deano and Frazer also deserve honorable mentions. Adam looked good with the ball at his feet but his decision-making was poor IMO (should have played Guly in earlier at the end). With Frazer our only real wide player, we're reliant on interplay in and around the box - and without the incisiveness and composure of Connolly or the runs from deep from Chaplow, we looked hurried and predictable. You're moaning now, but if I'd said to you that the only thing you could moan about at Christmas.....was the pack closing in on us in first, then you'd have probably said I was mental. We were always going to dip. It's happening, and hopefully happened. Thankfully we had such an excellent spell it has enabled us to go through this poor patch and still stay top of the division. We've been top since the middle of september, that's pretty incredible really. I've gone from not seeing my team ever top a league, to seeing us as a perminant fixture there for the last 3 months. Our away results need to improve, absoloutley, and I have doubts that they will. We've got a terrifc group of players and even though we didn't win today, I felt heartened by the display. We weren't nervous, we didn't freeze, we were bang up for it from the off. It wasn't a pretty game, but that was more down to Portsmouth and how they set the game out. They didn't intend to win that game, their game plan was about stopping us playing and crowding us out in the middle. This is where I felt we fell tactically short at times too, because we didn't have the option to change it and we were all too often crowded out in the middle with 3 incredibly similar players in there. We need a striker for sure, but I don't think we can ignore our need for an out and out winger - someone like Antonio who can pick the ball up and run, run, and run. We don't stretch the game and our breaks often start promising and then slow down to a crawl because we don't have that 'injection' in the final third. I'm sure Adkins is aware of it though and from what I've heard we're looking at a ST and an AMR for the January window. That would set us up nicely, because there's not much missing from this team at the moment.

Saints Warrior Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 Pleased with the draw given the 2 away games leading up to the game and Blackpool. Surprised how attacking we were, Saints were the better team and thats a positive. The Skate fans said the 3 points were in the bag, that didnt happen, they say they have the best support in England, they didnt turn up (empty seats). This game proved Saints are `the` team in hampshire and Skates can never build a new ground with 40,000 empty seats who are they kidding a bank? The bubble showed us the how thick the Skates are with some half wits signalling 1-0 to Skates as we exited the **** hole, can they not count it was 1-1, oh but they probally never went to the game like the 6,000 that have vanished from the blue few from the FA Cup win. Its a point for Saints and 2 lost for the arm chair club. get in there Saints...3 points in the bag your having a laugh

InvictaSaint Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 You're moaning now, but if I'd said to you that the only thing you could moan about at Christmas.....was the pack closing in on us in first, then you'd have probably said I was mental. Most sensible and rational post of the day; I doff my cap to you, sir.
