JohnnyFartPants Posted 31 October, 2008 Share Posted 31 October, 2008 Years ago I had a lovely little Collie dog, the sort that are really clever and learn tricks really easily. Even though I got him at an advanced age he was still able to learn new stuff and was a welcome pet, even getting on with our cats. Sadly, when we had a baby it began to behave differently. With the French doors open all day long, and even with the dog in the garden, he would come inside to **** his leg. This was met with being shouted at and chased outside. His actions became more and more until one day I decided to take him to a vet. Without knowing anything of my family life, he asked if we had a new baby. I said we did and he said that what the dog is doing is begging for attention. Without meaning to, all the attention was now going to the baby, meaning the dog would do anything, mainly bad things, as even bad attention was better than none at all. This is a common trait in dogs but is by no means limited to canines only.

JohnnyFartPants Posted 31 October, 2008 Author Share Posted 31 October, 2008 How did you resolve this issue? Did you have to deliberately give the dog more attention? That did work for a while and I thought things were going to be okay again. Sadly, on seeing the baby getting some attention in a bouncy chair on the floor, he walked up and growled one day, so I had him sent to the RSPCA to be re-homed. He went to an old man and I am sure he lived out his days in happiness. I still recall my final words to him as he left. "Bert, you are the weakest link, goodbye."
