.comsaint Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 Was there in '84 to see Steve Moran's legendary winner late on. Stood in the Fratton End that day (as did many Saints) as we couldn't get tickets for the Saints end. Was there again when we drew 2-2 ('87-'88 season) - Colin Clarke scoring both Saints goals that day. Was also there in 2004 when we lost 1-0 to the pikeys. I won't be there sunday alas - but I just know that come the final whistle - I'm so gonna wish I was!
St Columb Saint Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 84 have the scar to prove it. Bottle thrown, hit me on the head, was taken to medical area (under the fratton) I was told i needed to go to hospital but I had to make my I own way back. I thought bugger that so went back to the game just in time to see Steve score which made it all worth it.
Flyer Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 Was there last season for a game, its still a massive ****hole, even worse than I imagines although the last minute penalty equaliser and sending off of Liam Lawrence made the experience a little better. A little tip, if you need a ****, go during the game as you wont even get to the overflowing bogs if you start to queue at HT.

krissyboy31 Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 (edited) I've never even set foot in Portsmouth, let alone Fratton. One time my GFs old man was having his 50th birthday dinner in a skate hotel and I had to fake a sudden illness to get out of it. Other than that I've found it fairly easy to avoid the sh!thole. I can sympathise with these sentiments and I avoid it like the plague. Saying that I went in '76 and '84, so 100% record of last minute 1-Nil wins. SaintAmongSkates Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 First visit was the victory in the 84 (?) FA cup when i had to sit on the stands with the rest of my skate supporting family and drew too much attention to myself when we scored the first goal. Topped it off by getting Sperring's (?) reserve gk signature on my programme in the stands. Not bad for a 14 yr old with Southampton attitude. Certainly showed my family who's boss even though my 87 yrs old gran still calls me a scammer!

Chin Strain Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 Alan Knight game and 1-0 defeat, think it was 2004? Missed the 4-1 defeat when Niemi and Crouch bottled it! Niemi didn't bottle it. Claus and Jakobbsen did and Niemi lost all confidence in them which made him do things he wouldn't normally do.
Trumush Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 Had the pleasure of witnessing the 1976 0-1 the night we relegated them. Rednapp set us up to fail in 2005 , and players they shouldnt have been allowed to sign in 2010 beat us at ST Marys in the cup. It wont happen on Sunday,Nigel will have us up for it,the 3000 faithfull will be up for it 0-4 COYS !!!!
BlakeySFC Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 I've never been before, but one of my college friends years ago was a ref and she said that it 'literally is a sh*t-hole and smells of pi*s' so I think it's going to be a great stadium to watch football in... Dr Who? Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 Alan Knight Testimonial, and the 1-0...... to watch Saints. In the late 80's I was not allowed to go to Saints away games, and in the early 90's I used to go in the away end at Fratt*n. Best games Bristol City being 2-0 down only to win 3-2 with and injury time goal from a Mr Andy Cole!! The other being a 5-1 Skates win in the pouring rain, and while me and my mate 14 years old at the time were getting stick, we lifted up our tops to show the red and white!! ART Posted 16 December, 2011 Share Posted 16 December, 2011 My baptism into watching football came from sitting between dad and granddad in the stands at the Rust bowl back inthe early 50's with an occasional game at the Dell. It wasn't long thanks to John Sydenham I began going to the Dell on my own. I recall going to watch the Saints from the terraces at the Rust Bowl two or three times on my own till I went overseas. It was grim and got drenched one time and it poured with rain.
aintforever Posted 17 December, 2011 Share Posted 17 December, 2011 Went to the Alan Knight testimonial, that was carnage - plenty of Police outside the ground then 100 yards down the road and not a plod to be seen. Kicked off all over the place. Was sh!t scared. Then went to the 1-0 defeat, missed half the first half thanks to the local inbreds trying to kill us at the station, sh!t game, then locked in for an hour afterwards while they rioted. To be honest these games are more agro than they are worth, never a great day out. I will be happy to beat them Sunday then have them go out of business. Painswick Saint Posted 17 December, 2011 Share Posted 17 December, 2011 Only the once - FA Cup, January 1984. Brilliant day. The skates were throwing coins at the southampton team, and banana skins at Wallace. As Lawrie Mac said to the press the following day, 'we came away with a bye into the next round, two and six in loose change and half a pound of bananas'. I can see how it would be carnage, When I was there we were let out together and funnelled right in with the pompey fans, there was the potential for trouble considering the absurd finish but both sets of fans were chatting to each other about the game. Somehow I doubt that will happen tomorrow, I would imagine Saints fans will be held for a long time, especially if saints win.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 17 December, 2011 Share Posted 17 December, 2011 Due to my family connections I have been there well over 50 times, mostly between the age of 3-7. Fortunately my Dad also took me to a few games at the Dell, we only lived about 500 yds from there! My uncle was a fanatical Saints fan and he saw to it my football education took the right line. My first game at the Dell was in 1947, and I was hooked! From then on my only interest in Fratton was when my father was playing. I haven't been to Fratton Park, unless it involved the Saints since 1950. Who was your dad?
The9 Posted 17 December, 2011 Share Posted 17 December, 2011 I've seen 7 matches there. Skates v Millwall 1991/2 Skates v Newcastle, Cambridge and Bristol City 1992/3 Knight's Testimonial circa 93 v Saints in 2004 and some other match I refuse to acknowledge the year after. Given that the main rationale behind the bubble is that it's less invasive to freedom of movement than to hold people in the ground (as you have a choice to submit to the bubble but no option on the hold-back), I'd be pretty ****ed off if we get all this hassle AND held back - what it would do is prove that the secure area has no benefit to public safety and the bubble has failed. dubai_phil Posted 18 December, 2011 Share Posted 18 December, 2011 84 Cup match, stayed with a Saints ST mate who lived in North End, caught the bus to his place after the game. Hardest thing I have ever done in my life, keeping the glum face on during that bus ride. Got off at his road, we let out a massive YEAAAHHH, fecking bus stopped at lights 100 yards up the road. That was a scary moment, but made it home safe then down the Fawcett Inn & (memory bad think it was Nero's) for a bucket load
