just been drinking me tea time cupper from my saints mug and got me thinking apart from being a sad bugger wasnt there a competition open to supporters in the late 70s to design the crest? every body happy with it ? does it sum uo southampton fc? thoughts?

I like it. Some minor changes would make it quality.

Back to an old-school style ball, edit the bar with Southampton FC written on it.

Would agree, it is quite distinctive. I like the Norwich City one up here as well very plain but recognisable. Got me thinking, which ones do I really dislike ? Will get back to you ? Leeds ?

Hey the9, there's another crest thread!

The style of stitching the badge to the shirt used on Shrewbury Towns 1998 kits is probably the best, although Huddersfield from 2003 runs it close.

I always liked it. I think it need modernising though

Be careful what you wish for.

Whenever I see Fulham's and other clubs 'modern' crests I'm so thankful that we have a well drawn traditional and colourful crest that is rooted in Southampton and Hampshire.

Posted

There would have been a Sunderland reference too but, I'm reliably informed, the so-called 'powers that be' aren't sure if O'Neill has what it takes to prevent their relegation.

Make of that what you will.

I've always disliked the tree on our badge as it doesn't really epitomize Southampton,I think the tree should be replaced with a ship as this has more connection with the city.

Posted

I have never been keen on the badge since its launch in 1974 .

There have been numerous attempts on here to offer a new and better design , Gecko in particular came up with some spectacular alternatives.

I think it's rubbish too cartoony. Chelsea, arsenal and Millwall have the best badges. We should have the halo stickman or the city crest like we used to before the 70s.

Posted

I think it's original and separates us from all the normal mundane crests out there in the FL.

It's instantly recognizable too - wouldn't want to change it for anything.

I think the crest is wonderful. I particularly love the top part - the shape of the scarf and the football with the saint halo on top. Brilliant!

Totally agree with you. I also like the fact that the tree symbolises our proximity to the New Forest and the waves similarly with respect to the Solent.

But the tree epitomises the New Forest which is within the County of Southampton. If we were called Southampton City you might have a point, but we are not (thank God). Hampshire is a relatively modern rename of the proper name for the County. Sometimes wish it was still called the County of Southampton, it would really **** the Skates off to have Southampton as part of their address.

Was that back when Winchester was a capital?

The badge is great, I really like it, and if it changed I would not feel such a connection to it. I am proud to be a Saints fan and I am proud of our badge!

It also first appeared the year I was born..... lovely!!

Was it a winner of a compitition or did the club design it?

The best badge in football!!. Would hate it if we messed with it.

The tree represents the parks of the city. The son or nephew of the designer came on the old forum a while back and ran through the symbolism, most are strikenly obvious but the tree was the one people got wrong.

Like the shield, but find the scarf, ball and halo tacky. Much prefer our previous crest.

Ditto - probably the three features I find most tacky and dated.

Come on matey, your designs kept me up at night. Let's have some more!

I'm pretty sure I've only ever done one badge design (sent via PM), I stick to kits usually. Gecko likes a badge dabble though... I actually quite like our badge, unique and convoluted as it is. I hate all of these 1990-2010 reworkings, they're gash and transient. There's a lot to be said for tradition, and that's been the Saints badge in various forms since long before I was supporting them.

Seriously, I expect this badge to go when we reach the PL, hopefully next season.

You see, the club badge is it's corporate symbol and that's important in the modern day big business world that is PL football.

Saints were a much more folksy entity 40 years ago when a fan designed the badge in a competition, they're not now.

Unfortunately the badge looks a bit 'Roy of the Rovers' and is all over the shop with images not representative of the football club. Saints, after all, are not the local tourist bureau.

You may recall a new very modern shield design was used to promote the Markus cup competition, so an agency has clearly been employed for that purpose and I suspect a new badge based on that shield may be in the pipeline.

In this day and age a corporate symbol needs to be simplistic and unambiguous to have instant impact and recognition as the key image of the organisation concerned.

What is the core image of Southampton FC? ... The Saints, of course.

It is a superb nickname, as good as any, and should be the key identifying image in the forward promotion of the football club and it's associated business entities.

But it must be kept simple, even a stick saint or just the word Saints, so long as it is professional and stands out as the unmistakable logo of Southampton Football Club.

The current badge has served us well enough in a simpler corporate age, but just prepare yourselves for the start of the next 40 years, not a continuance of the previous 40 ....

I'd like to see the tree changed to a bear or similar to represent the Liebherr family because without them we probably would'nt have a club to support let alone a badge to moan about !

Tacky? How so.

The scarf is shaped like a scroll, and it puts red and white stripes into the crest. The ball is placed at the top with the scarf around it - like a scarf around a supporter's neck. And the halo is over the ball - like a halo over the head of a saint. Simple, but clever! How can you possibly find that tacky?

Equally why would the club throw away the recognisability of a crest that has been seen worldwide in the Prem already, and the (however tenuous) affiliation some overseas fans will have built from the successes of 2003 and the 12 years of Prem history we already have?

The previous badge was the city crest - which the club had no copyright control over. The 1974 badge meant that they could control merchandise. Personally I think that it is OK. Much more concerned about Sundays game.

This would presume the badge was an unmistakable icon of style, taste and recognisability known the world over. Sadly, it is not and I would guess it has almost no recognisability beyond dedicated Saints fans.

Now, if ever, would be the ideal time to change it to something that is, or can become, iconic.

Something that will bring more recognition of Southampton FC and present the club as a progressive, cutting edge outfit in the 21st century.

Sadly, the current badge has all the savoire faire of a 1950's Butlins advertisement ...

You want a "corporate symbol"; I want a club badge. You're focused on Southampton FC as a business; I see it as a football club.

In fairness, I think he was thinking about how the club sees it. He's probably quite accurate.
