Legod Third Coming Posted 13 December, 2011 Posted 13 December, 2011 I am 100% behind Nigel and his methods but I'm also a little concerned. Why is the game against Portsmouth to be approached any differently to any other away game? We won't win the league by winning one game. Our motivation to win should be 100% game in and game out. All I can see by focusing on one game in this way, is that the players come on the pitch over-pumped, one is sent off within minutes (my money is on Morgan) and we watch another three points away from home slip away... We have the class and capability to rise above this tribal b o ll o x and deliver three points. Plain, simple, straightforward. We can crow about it afterwards to our hearts content, but if we lose this (a game we have now made a primary focus), how does that stand is any stead for future away games that we have now rendered 'less important'... I hope he is purely playing to the crowd with this one and that, in fact, we're approaching this game exactly the same as all other games!!

Bearsy Posted 13 December, 2011 Posted 13 December, 2011 It's true that when we're playing the small clubs and humdrum also rans we should just turn up and collect an easy three points, but you've got to bear in mind for the minnows of the league like Portsmouth this is their cup final, so NA is clearly trying to avoid complacency amongst the troops.

I'm sure he prepares the squad for every match individually so in that respect its business as usual. The local derby element just gives the opportunity for a bit of PR spin to keep the fans happy.

Different atmosphere, more about bottle and focus than tactics so perhaps more focus on motivational and psychological preparation than tactical? Makes sense doesn't it? I think people need to start appreciating just how tough away games are in this league. Every team can beat anyone at home, all about timing really, that's what makes it so competitive. If we had good away form we'd be about 15 points clear! Just not a feasible expectation. I expected to lose to Bristol and doncaster, just felt like tough times to play at small grounds against teams with nothing to lose and desperate to beat the leaders. The next 2 games are very interesting. Beat Pompey and I can see every chance of taking the palace game for granted and getting caught out. Lose to Pompey and I'm convinced we'll beat palace. I bet palace fans would rather we beat Pompey that's for sure. 4 points from the 2 and I'll be delighted. Agree - people got it wrong on here. Its not just clever politics - NA telling the congregation what it wants to hear. Yes its only another 3 points and no doubt that will be stressed after the game; but to put in a performance and get the 3 points will require a different approach and mindset i.e. dealing with the atmosphere etc. In addition, winning a derby does bring benefits -no doubt, it boosts team confidence, a similar effect to a good cup run and it probably affects subconsciously the degree to which fans get on players back when things aren't going so well. So yes derbies are different and it makes sense to prepare for them differently (within limits).

For the hard of thinking, I wasn't completely serious. Suprised to find such a spirited defence of Portsmouth on here though. Would you care to expand further how great Pompey are, maybe you can win us round?

Not sure I buy it completely - I'm not sure the atmosphere of a Derby should affect a professional preparation any more than any other game? But you're right it will be a new experience for some players and they need to rise above it.

Surprised Glenda never mentioned that to you.
