Colinjb Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 In preparation for my next blog I am toying with the idea of compiling a list of 100 players who have been the most influential on our history. (Very much a rip off of the Scouser's 100 players who shook the Kop... Granted, but still an idea with some genuine merit.) So, We need nominations, verging from the obvious to the personal, the sublime to the rediculous on who should be on this list. Also, I'm sure between is we can come up with a better name for the run-down!
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 These sort of lists are always so subjective as no one is now around to "push" the pre-war era or even the Edwardian days. So let's kick off with George Carter, Arthur Chadwick, Sam Meston, Harry Wood, George Clawley, George Molyneux, Albert Brown, Fred Harrison, Frank Jefferis, Bert Lee, Bill Rawlings, Art Dominy, Bert Shelley, Tommy Allen, Bert Hough, John Bradford, Arthur Holt, George Harkus, Mike Keeping, Tom Parker, Fred Titmuss, Johnny Arnold, Bill Luckett and Ted Drake. A worthy successor to both Chadwick and Bowman, the club’s previous centre backs, Bert was coolness personified and was at his best during desperate pressure around the goal area. He was also the mainspring when it came to feeding the ball to his forwards. His announcement to leave the club at the end of the season was met with outcry throughout the town; despite this though he left for Scotland and, breaking with his self- imposed tradition of an annual move, remained at Tayside for six years. He was briefly back in England in 1911 with Bradford before completing his playing career again in Scotland. After the war he became chairman of Dundee Hibernian but soon after expanded his footballing travels abroad, briefly in Canada and then to Ecuador where football was in its infancy. Returning home to his native Northamptonshire in 1926 he coached several local clubs before helping Ipswich Town achieve League status. In later years he became an insurance agent. norwaysaint Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 How about extending it to all people who were involved with saints? Nobody's going to mention Ted Bates as a player, probably none of us saw him, but as a saints personality he'd get near the top. Also it'd create place for McMenemy and other popular characters like Strachan, not to mention Rupert Lowe.

Including this roll call I have a list of nearly 80 names down already. Fitzhugh, I may need a little help when it comes to the specifics of these fine gentlemen. It's a good point regarding managers. But where do you draw the line? I'm not sure flexing beyond the 'player' idea would really be a good idea. Say as many members list their favourite 20 players. This would be detrimental to those from prior generations though.

Panda Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 David Burnside and his ball juggling as well as his visionary play. How about Dave Webb too, great RB for us. Don't forget Steve Mills either. The Phil Boyer and Ted McDougall double act. The mighty Mel Blythe. Peter Wells, one of our most under rated keepers. Peter Rodriguez who lifted the Cup. Reserve CF in the 1965-66 promotion side who came in and scored 11 goals in 18 League starts (!)... which included a hat-trick v.Pompey AWAY. (we won 5-2) I belive he is the only Saints player ever to score a hat-trick at Fratton Park. Deserves a special medal for that I think. However, Norman wasn't included in Ted Bates' new Div.1 line-up, because Bates bought in a new striker in the summer ..a welsh lad called Ron Davies !
