S-Clarke Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 Yeah, this is causing serious concern for the MetO. On current viewing it's similar to what hit scotland last week (possibly higher gusts) but it will be more widespread affecting the entire country in some way. We also have a pretty big weather system to get past tomorrow night first.

Lighthouse Posted 12 December, 2011 Share Posted 12 December, 2011 The jet stream is a long way South at the moment, over the North Coast of France. It's pretty strong too about 170mph. Normally that means pretty sh*t weather for the UK.

Normally that means pretty sh*t weather for the UK. I once flew back from New York to Heathrow in 5 hours 45mins when the jet stream was expecially strong - about 1.5 hours quicker than usual. Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 17 December, 2011 Share Posted 17 December, 2011 Brilliant..landing at Gatwick from Budapest on Thurs night...nothing like a windy landing. Landed at Gatwick from Barcelona a few years ago, second week of December. The flight was delayed 4 hours and the Air Traffic Control wonks would only let British based pilots into UK airspace as the crosswinds were gusting to 80 knots. We landed sideways with a fair number of the passengers praying. As we touched down and the driver put the engines into reverse thrust the cabin crew and a lot of passengers burst into spontaneous applause. S-Clarke Posted 17 December, 2011 Share Posted 17 December, 2011 And? Or was this another BBQ summer Met Office classic? TBF the media bigged it up, the meto were always keeping their cards close to their chest. Just happend that the system took a southern track and hit France with storm force winds, rather than us.
