The official unofficial January transfer targets thread..

My Christmas shopping list would be (in priority order):

1. Albert Adomah

2. Mame Biram Diouf

3. Luke Chambers

4. Lewis McGugan

4. Nathaniel Clyne

not a chance in hell of getting Adomah to leave Bristol for us at this time. He has not long since moved there and seems to have settled in well. He is playing extremely well and is not goign to jump ship unless its a Prem side that comes knocking - which I doubt they will. Bristol don't need to sell as was shown by Maynard staying in the summer, so that move is just not going to happen. Likewise Clyne. He turned down a move to Wolves last season preferring to stay at Palace for at least another season. He is not going to go the same route as Bostock.

McGugan has fallen from grace massively at Forest. He would be a great signing IMO. Great feet, plays with his head up and has the kind of ability we are looking for to slot into a floating attacking role like Lallana often plays He was their outstanding player last season and the Forest fans I know are all scratching their heads why he has not been picked this season. The game against us was a prime example with them desperate for an attacking player only for him to come on with a couple of minutes to go. The link has been to Everton though. The link with Puncheon might stand up as Cotterill fancied him when he was at the skates but just could not afford him.

I can't believe we haven't been linked with a left back yet. OK we've got Fox, Harding, Dickson and Luke Shaw coming through with Hooiveld and Seaborne possibly being able to cover but what happens if they form a little clique hire a minibus for a night out and get involved in an accident? That's all our potential left backs out - we need to sign a new anti-social one ASAP IMO.

The fact we are top at this stage proves the decison to go with the exisiting squad with minimum changes to have some some degree of merit!

That's the mentality the Romans had in about 400 AD and look where it got them. The moment you stop trying to achieve better by improving is the moment you begin to fall. We have got away with it so far, but the cracks are beginning to show. If we continue our timid transfer policy we will drop like a stone.

Antisocial is your c*nt of a next door neighbour who plays very loud music late at night, unsociable is someone who doesn't make friends and avoids talking to people. P1sses me off when morons get those mixed up.

Strange logic. Three bottom half of the Championship sides linked to him, so Saints at the top of the league should?

Do you not read your post before you post it? Do you not realise what someone is trying to say, Clearly he was implying that Darron Gibson is a premiership midfielder of a decent quality so if there are other teams below us in the championship in for him there is no reason why he wouldnt come to us over them! If we were interested that is. I think he would provide decent competition for places.

I've always rated Gibson and if these three sides are interested then surely we should be too?

Although, is he a more creative central midfielder than what we already have?

TBH I'd rather bring through JWP than sign another CM at this stage.

I have no idea whether he'd be a realistic target but for me I'd sign Simon Church before any of the other hotshots mentioned.

Really impressed me for Reading against West Ham, a very complete striker. What would be his price...roughly?

I expect Reading would be seeking similar to when they sold Doyle, what was that £5-6m ? although unlikely to sell to a rival in the same division at this stage of the season. Might be a potential target in the summer if we go up and they don't.

Sunday Mirror reporting the NA checked out Robbin Ruiter on Friday - 24 year old Dutch goal keeper plays for Volendam and is rated at £1m.

Oddly enough (perhaps), I think our mini-blip this month will work in our favour in terms of being able to attract a "higher profile" player or two into the side.

When we were flying, you can see the likes of Sharp and co saying "I'm not going there as they've got such a strong team already I might find I don't start as many games as I'm starting here". Whereas now, they might be thinking "I could be the player that makes all the difference down there - they need a boost of fresh talent and I could be a hero for the second half of the season".

Maybe. Maybe not.

I imagine it was more to do with his family situation than anything else.

Timid? What a load of ********. Ever thought that perhaps we are trying to live within our means? The prices quoted in the summer (£5m for Maynard) were crazy, and I for one don't ever want to see us stretch beyond our means again. Far too many Saints fans that have forgotten how close were were to folding, so anyone moaning about not spending these sums of money now are idiots.

personally I've never rated him. He was dire in the cup game against us last time out. Morgan gave him the run around. Do we need another centre midfielder?

all three promoted clubs, who were at the top of the league and therefore were similarly placed to ourselves, strengthened in some way during January.

If the right player is there, at the right price and we keep within our budget, then it is a no brainer. It's the gambling on promotion we should never do ever again, ever.

Thats the crux of it. The problem with threads like this is people assume that the players they've highlighted want to come here, are easily in our price range (despite having no idea what our price range is), the parent club want to let them go etc etc. then when said players aren't brought in people get all upset that the club has no ambition.

No one is going to complain about us getting in good quaility players but it has to be right for the club.

Getting back to the OP I do like the look of Adomah at Brizzle city and Matt Phillips at Blackpool both would add something to the team IMO. From watching a bit of Europa footie I also like Nathan Redmond from Birmingham though at 17 maybe not what we're looking for right now.

he has been outstanding in those games. Brum will need to sell players in January, he'd be last on their list to be allowed to leave, but if they can't offload Ridgewell for the right price they might get desperate.

I'd buy Curtis Davis and a fit Jordan Mutch without a second thought. Note we like to raid teams that are desperate for money - you tend to get a good deal of course. I doubt either would be available in our price range.

How about this guy from Irish PL. Rory Donnelly is 19 years old, 6.2 and a striker. Quite a few teams are interested in signing him including Liverpool and Swansea apparently. Looks like he has an eye for goal though I have no idea what level Irish football is at. BBC link below including video off some of his goals.

Curtis Davies is overrated IMO - was very poor for Leicester when he went on loan and has been OK for brum but not spectacular. Hasn't realised his potential.

We need a decent CB, a midfielder with pace, a free scoring striker and a goalkeeper. Kasper Schmeichel, Snodgrass or Whittingham, Maynard or Sharp plus a decent CB. That's it!!

doesn't every team?? There is a reason why they aren't two a penny as well.

I just don't see the need for another CB at the moment. We already have 5 on the books, which is one too many IMO. I know Jaidi and Seaborne have long term injuries, but that's why you have cover when only 2 of them can play. If we sign another we will just have Jaidi, Seaborne, Martin and new matey on the wage bill not doing anything. Maybe that doesn't bother some of you, but when we're paying £3 booking fees all season it's quite annoying for me.
