The official unofficial January transfer targets thread..

Have to agree with Dalek on this one. We should have made wholesale changes during the Summer and brought in 10 or so players. That way we could have really disrupted the squad and had a similar start to Leicester.

The fact we are top at this stage proves the decison to go with the exisiting squad with minimum changes to have some some degree of merit!

Lambert back up is greatly needed. We have no other CF in the team and trying to put Guly in that role will never work. We lack pace along the front line as well so someone like Maynard would be great. Also someone to take the pressure off Lambert a bit.

We also need a winger who has some pace and can attack the by-line and whip a cross in. That Adomah gave us more problems than any player I've seen in ages. Someone like him would be great.

Lastly defensively we struggle against players who have pace. Any thoughts on who we could bring in to help this?

CF - Stephen Dobbie, Swansea

SD made second and scored third of Swansea's play-off final goals. If he went on loan to a championship club this year he'd be on a hat-trick of promotions.

Whilst I personally think he's the dogs b0ll0x and love watching him play, he's never been great as the lone striker, playing far better just behind the main CF, which in Swansea's 4-5-1 puts him in the centre of midfield. This requires insanely high pass completion rates > 90% (Leon Britton managed 100% v Bolton). Dobbie just can't match that and so I wonder whether we'll really see that much of him this year. Shame.

I reckon Dobbie/Rodgers have a decision to make come January. CDAJFS.

I'm sure that it was a good squad - in Eriksson's mind, at least - the problem was he wasn't given enough time to convince them that they were ..a team.

At least half of our present side is the "Pardew inheritance " (most of whom are still here in the big squad) and have now been supplemented by Adkins' buy-ins.

Nigel & his Coaching staff have succeeded, where Eriksson wasn't allowed time to work on their mindset in the same way.

That.... is the main reason why we are at the top of the League, and Leicester are where they are .....

Oh my God, why do people think Jut is the answer. The only question he answers is 'Who is a distinctly average striker, who also happens to be a Saints fan.

We should buy players that could make the step up to the Prem, not very average Championship players. The only striker from the Championship we should be looking at is Maynard, and *maybe* Rodriguez.

I really am getting frustrated with people on this site who blatantly have no ****ing idea what they are talking about ability wise.

He also answers the question of 'Who is playing for a club who needs the money that can also score goals, provide a physical presence going forward and work as a holding attacker that can bring his team-mates into play?'

I personally do not feel he is merely an average championship player, I feel he is a player of good ability who is wasted in such a wretched Coventry team.

Going on such a rant of a difference of opinion really is needless. An agreement to dissagree is all that's required.

Plus it's not like Leicester are getting consistently better is it.Mind you when Mills gets sent off every 3 or 4 games it can't be helpful can it.

The problem with having a back up for Rickie is like having a back up for Kelvin- they do not play often enough to make an impact when on the odd occasion they are required.

Do not disagree that another quality striker would be useful, but he would have to play at the expense of Rickie or Guly at times to ensure he would make the impact, Lee Barnard maybe could fit this role but at the moment is woefully short of competitive match fitness (one thing doing lots of training, but you can't beat playing in full games to get match fit). If you want a real quality player in January, someone has got give up their first choice spot to make room.

Tom 28...i love that list...

Fantastic list there and would be over the moon with that...lots of youth and pace...exactly what is needed

Diouf never gets a game and would be great for a loan with view to permanent if we get promoted

Adamoah would provide genuine pace and penetration..

McGugan can player accross the whole midfield and has excellent quality

and Clyne could be the right back that could take us to the Premier league

Some good suggestions there

Have heard from several forest fans that puncheon heading there in jan as part ex for mcgugan

That would be fantastic if true - would be a good move for both players IMO. Cotterill reputedly rates JP and JP might be more willing to go there than Skatesville. Mame Biram Diouf is also a good shout, would be able to get him in on loan faster than wasting most of January haggling for Maynard or any other number of random strikers although Watford might be willing to strike a deal before Jan 1 on Marvin Sordell. Either way, we need the new faces in the first week of Jan, not Jan 31st as our squad has clearly been creaking recently. There's some faces we need to move on who aren't going to get a game like Dickson (although I think he's a decent player personally)

My Christmas shopping list would be (in priority order):

1. Albert Adomah

2. Mame Biram Diouf

3. Luke Chambers

4. Lewis McGugan

4. Nathaniel Clyne

Great list, you've pretty much covered all our ''dodgy'' positions in one there! All pretty realistic too. Adomah would likley be the most expensive, heard that Bristol City wouldn't accept anything lower than £5m, not sure how true that is though. Chambers would cost a bit, but players like Cylne, McGugan are running down their contracts and would be avaliable at a pretty decent price.

Doesn't sound very likely, Puncheon won't want to go to a relegation threatened club, it's too far north and Forest want a genuine striker.Anyway from the little that I know about McGugan he's probably not good enough to play for us anyway. We don't need another penalty and dead ball king.

He's a funny player, in a way from reading what Forest fans are saying about him....if the swap deal is true, we'd be trading like for like. Both very sulky characters apparentley - but when on their game they are match winners in any side.

I think McGugan had a reasonable season last year when Forest had something approaching a decent side and a decent manager but I don't think he's done very much at all this season so far.Mind you they were mad to sack Davies and then eventually replace him with Cotterilll via McClaren, guess it's about money for transfers being available or not, that seems to be the root of half of the managerial sackings and resignations these days.

Saints seem to be a bit choosy about who they sign and under what conditions nowadays, wouldn't be surprised if we only see

2 signings in january, a mid range, mid price striker and a youngish centre back; maybe even on loan.

Mcgugan and Luke chambers are best mates off the pitch, would be good if we can get both, as for mcgugans attitude he had rough time a couple of years ago but seems fine now, very versitile and would fit in well here, as I said there's a few forest fans reckon this is done deal

You could sign Jon Parkin on a 6 month loan to do the same job.

I'm going to throw the name of Luciano Becchio into the ring. A good all-round striker, can hold the ball up, decent in the air, and IIRC has decent burst of acceleration.

I often think out-and-out pace is overrated in a central striker, sharpness and a little bit of acceleration is more important to get away from defenders in and around the area.

He's not been getting regular games at Leeds because of Ross McCormack's form, so might be available.

That's not a bad shout steve. He's kind of like a more mobile, faster version of Lambert.

Knows where the net is for sure, but I'm not sure how well those 2 could play up top together as they have a few similar attributes. Would say that Lambo would work better with a small tricky forward who can play on the shoulder. (i.e a young conners)

Ben told from a decent source that Zaha and Ambrose (both Palace) are at St Marys for talks about signing.Great if true

I would be blown away if we signed Zaha - he's being tracked by a host of top European clubs and would cost a bomb. Has your source been right about transfers before?

Ambrose would be a sweet signing too. He can play on either flank and offers us something different to our current cork/morgan/deano midfield 3.

Be surprised if they were at SMS so close to our fixture with them, and two and a half weeks before the window opens, or if Palace were willing to sell in view of a cup semi final coming up.

Okay my go for the gossip bit.

Lucas from Coventry, just needs to agree personal terms according to someone who knows Lucas very well.

Never had gossip from this guy before but his son knows him.

I've no doubt Lucas would like to join us, subject to terms being correct etc but my view - not ITK etc - is that if we had wanted to sign him we would have completed a deal before the November loan period ended.

Not sure we will go back on this one. He might have been available as a "loan" to buy previously but come January there will be a wider list of candidates we consider.

I love this time of year, love it!! If all our sightings and wishes come true, we will have one hell of a squad!! Won't be enough to appease dalek though, his grand bet on us finishing 17th will be in real jeopardy!!!!!

I think we can take from the summer that almost nothing will be true. Or even if they are true we change our minds at a late hour. I don't think we will sign any of those mentioned and certainly not a big money signing like Zaha.

Still it is fun wishing certain players will sign!!! I have also wished for an ipad2, but I wont get that either lol

I honestly think we'll go back for one of our original summer targets like Billy Sharp or Jutkiewicz and I can see Jutkiewicz being the one we actually get. I'm sure one of the reports I read was that we'd made 2 offers: a slightly higher fee for a loan then perm or a slightly lower fee for a straight purchase in Jan. Maybe Cov wanted him for a bit longer to get them out of schtuk and felt happier to take a risk on the lower fee? Would kind of explain his reluctance to talk about our interest in Nov, without dismissing it out of hand.

The build up to the window is great: Billy Sharp is selling his house and is nailed on to come here; Zaha & Ambrose are in talks; McGugan is a done deal from Forest with Pucnheon going the other way and now Jutkiewicz is all but done too. I bet Mrs Cortese is well p*ssed off Nicola hasn't been round much to help with the Xmas shopping. Unless these are his presents to Nige... ;)

So what is the new starting X1?

If we are signing 2-3-4 starters (we are only signing players WCDAJFU in the Prem right?) who are the 2-3-4 players they replace?

I'm not sure we'll sign any out and out starters in Jan; the 5 year plan is well on track and our full starting X1 is more than capable at this level.

More bodies WCDAJFU are clearly what's needed, the bench looks very threadbare at times, I accept this is a pretty poor re-run of RL's failed policies but it makes sense to me. Are we really going to spend 4m-5m-6m on players like Adamoha and Rodriguez (?), totally unproven at prem level; surely when we get up we will need some kitty left for 'proper' Premier league players?

Where's McAuley now (West Brom?), a player we coulda, woulda, shoulda signed 5 years ago.

speaking personally ..I don't know that he is "the answer" either..but a quick look at the goalscoring table shows that despite Coventry being bottom of the league he has still managed 8 league goals, which is more than any other Saints player (except Lambert of course) and distinctly more than any of the other "so-called " targets that NA... may/may not.. be watching and who are being quoted at £4-5 million.

I'm a bit fed-up hearing about "great players " who are suposed to be playmakers/top strikers who can't manage 10 goals a season...

When bidding /buying a player there has to be something that tips the balance in favour of one club or another.

Assuming that Coventry might agree a fee with more than one club..I'd say then (and only then) might the "Saints fan" bit come into consideration.

Let's face it ..who wouldn't want to play for their home town side . .given the chance?
