Dalek2003 Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 Same was said in the summer when we didnt sign many! Look at us now, truth is nobody knows! Actually i stated clearly back in the summer, that we would start strongly and then fade away due to a small squad and relatively modest investment. I see this as happening right now. Stubby Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 I think: - We will be at or near the top in January. - Being in that position, we will invest in a couple of quality players. - With our squad plus those additions, we will be good enough to stay in the top two. So Yes :-)

Matthew Le God Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 (edited) For once I agree with CB Fry. Also Dalek has never commented on this... - Last season the 17th placed team had 56 points from 46 games. - Saints currently have 43 points from 21 games Dalek2003, do you really believe Saints won't be able to get more than 13 points from the next 75 available in the remaining 25 games? Saints didn't need to spend huge amounts in the summer as the squad was largely already in place. This has been shown to be correct given Saints are top of the league and top scorers in the League so far. Yes, one or two signing would be nice in January just to make sure, but the squad is already very good within the Championship. SuperMikey Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 If we can improve our away form and bring some players in to improve the depth of our squad then I don't see why we can't gain promotion. Champions is ambitious, because West Ham, Leicester etc will almost certainly be spending big in January, but I think we're in a great position to challenge for 2nd place and I wouldn't be disappointed with a place in the play-offs either. I suppose we should be grateful that West Ham have hit their poor patch of form at the same time as us, otherwise with arguably 8pts dropped over the last 3 weekend games we could be in a lot worse position than 3pts clear still at the top! That will help us to attract players in January and inspire the team.
corky morris Posted 11 December, 2011 Share Posted 11 December, 2011 Yes I think we can, but am not sure we will?? If we can maintain our best starting 11 I would say yes. Just not sure that is possible with all the games. What the last 4 games have showed to me is that we dont have the squad of other teams at the top. Think West Ham yesterday with Cole on the bench. If we can strengthen in January then yes we will, but this is Saints & we know we have the ability to implode at any moment.

But Corky, the others are in no better posture than us and they need more points. If the results go our way next week-end we could be 7 or 8 points clear of 3rd again at Christmas, then we have 2 winnable games.I've looked at a couple of schedules and can't really see any iof the others making up enough ground to trouble us.Having said that our season could well turn on the home game with Cardiff. As that is what it would take to have come 17th last season when you consider the points we have already. ffs Dalek! Either you are insane or on a pointless long term wind up (or both)! Saint Fan CaM Posted 12 December, 2011 Share Posted 12 December, 2011 Yes, providing that we strengthen certain positions in January. And when I say strengthen I mean buy in better than we've got because we need to bed those players in ready for the Prem. A striker, a left footed playmaker like Lallana, a pacey box-to-box CM in the mould of Chappers (Cork/Hammond/Morgan are too similar), and possibly a better keeper than Bart and Davis (but can't see that happening). Dr Who? Posted 12 December, 2011 Share Posted 12 December, 2011 I still think we will go up, there are many teams that win a few, then lose a few. All it would take is a winning run of 4/5 games, and someone could run away at the top. I think we are having our sticky patch and we are still picking up points and still top. I think we will go up yes!
Mowgli Posted 12 December, 2011 Share Posted 12 December, 2011 This time last year we were 9th. 8 points behind the leaders Brighton. We had all been a bit underwhelmed by the summer signings and although we all had a few ambitious targets for the january transfer window, activity was a bit limited. It worked well though and we pushed on after Christmas to get better and better with basically the same squad. Ringing any bells? This year We were all a bit underwhelmed by the summer signings and although we all have a few ambitious targets for the january transfer window, I suspect activity will be a bit limited. It's worked well so far and actually we've played in a way that has got us to the top without going all out. NA targetted 10th place or higher with a view to pressing on after Christmas. It's all working pretty well so far with Chaplow Hammond, and Guly especially exceeding all expectations of competing at this level. So all in all, I'd have to be very pessimistic or a complete miserable bastard not to suggest we have a golden chance of automatic promotion this season. COYR. Lets go up as Champions!! david in sweden Posted 12 December, 2011 Share Posted 12 December, 2011 (edited) I have believed in promotion from day one. Although.. I'm firmly expecting some expenditure in January and three or four new players to steady up the squad against injuries and poss. suspensions during the Spring. After last season, we're on the up , I'm not sure if this squad can secure a third season as it is now. Promotion to the Prem. will mean a LOT of new faces. Many of our present squad started off as L1 players, not may of those will be able to sustain life in the Prem. buctootim Posted 13 December, 2011 Share Posted 13 December, 2011 In five of the past six seasons the team top at Xmas has been promoted, so the chances are over 83% in our favour. Going by that logic there is a 20% chance one of the teams promoted will be Norwich or QPR.
Petersfield Saint Posted 14 December, 2011 Share Posted 14 December, 2011 I reserve judgement till I see the results of the January transfer window. All will become clear at that time. We dont currently have the squad strength to sustain the campaign to secure promotion. Agree with Alpine; heart says yes definitely, head says squad strength will be everything in seeing us through to the end of the season.
