david in sweden Posted 7 December, 2011 Share Posted 7 December, 2011 Congratulations Kelvin, it's been a rough ride at times, but all credit to him 'cos he stuck to us in the depths of relegation... and Administration. 250 games is a lot for a keeper - in one club. He's been loyal and a great club man. If anyone deserves a chance of promotion and play in the Prem...it's Kelvin.

saints-cris Posted 7 December, 2011 Share Posted 7 December, 2011 Great achievement by a top keeper. Had his bad moments but hes extremely solid these days. Could have left us for West Ham but sticked with us, top lad.
Saint Garrett Posted 7 December, 2011 Share Posted 7 December, 2011 If anyone deserves a chance of promotion and play in the Prem...it's Kelvin. Although I agree with the sentiment, I'd be surprised if he's still our number 1 next year if we get promoted. Top achievement though and got to appreciate how he stayed with us through the 'hard times'.

Top achievement though and got to appreciate how he stayed with us through the 'hard times'. Odd how peoples opionions differ, I'd say that he's 1 of a few whose place would be almost guranteed next season if we're promoted. 1 of the only players with Prem experience, our most experienced player too... Wouldn't think he'll be an automatic choice next season at all, whether we're in the premier league or the Championship. Seems to be spilling a lot of balls of late.Decent strikers will capitalise on them for sure. Wouldn't Connolly be our most experienced player in terms of number of Premier League games, don't know the exact number of PL games played though,we have 6 players with English top flight experience,7 if you count Jaidi, and another 4 with top flight experience in other Leagues. Not a particularly pleasant experience for him, though. The Sunderland fans thought he was dreadful, and I have to say, when we signed him the following summer I thought it was a shocking decision from Burley. But he has shown himself to be a superb professional and excellent asset to have at the club. I don't think he's quite what we need if we were to go up, but I would like him to stick around. Agreed. Both our keepers have played in the Premier League before I believe and you can't say that about many of our other players.
Saint Garrett Posted 7 December, 2011 Share Posted 7 December, 2011 Won't Davis be 37 next season, and he hasn't been particularly 'unbeatable' the last few seasons, despite being decent. I would love him to stick around as he's a top professional, but wouldnt be surprised if we brought in a young upcoming keeper for him to mentor. Smithies? Lewis? Loach? Or maybe an experienced decent keeper from the NPC? Lee Camp, Joe Murphy?

Window Cleaner Posted 7 December, 2011 Share Posted 7 December, 2011 Bialkowski hasn't, has he? Don't thnk so no, came to Saints after relegation. FWIW the Saints players having experience in the PL are: Davis Connolly Richardson Cork Chaplow Jaidi Fox

Jack Posted 7 December, 2011 Share Posted 7 December, 2011 I thought Kelv was shocking when we first signed him. Made quite a few howlers IIRC an I remember a game at Colchester when the fans were right on his back, he turned around and gave the away end a piece of his mind. Fair play to him, he stuck with us and has been brilliant. Saved us a LOT of points over the years

The Cat Posted 7 December, 2011 Share Posted 7 December, 2011 I like Kelvin. Yes he has made a few howlers but so have most keepers. We don't let many goals in where you think "he should have saved that". His kicking has improved immesurably over the past year too. He could do a decent job in the Premier League for a season if we got promoted.

I could understand why you would still be like that if you saw his QPR etc. howlers in the play-off season, but not if you'd seen him since. Top achievement though and got to appreciate how he stayed with us through the 'hard times'. Agreed. A very good keeper, a model professional, and a even better man. But there's little room for sentiment in the modern game and the Premier League demands outstanding goalkeepers - not just good ones.
a1ex2001 Posted 8 December, 2011 Share Posted 8 December, 2011 If you'd told me he'd still be here all this time after the 'incident' at Sheffield Wednesday a few years back I'd have called you a liar, he's a decent keeper but nowhere near as good as some on here make out and his 'professional' attitude clearly wasn't on show that day at Hilsborough when he was terrible and got the hump when the paying support pointed it out to him. Brentford and MK Dons home last season, rochdale away, 1st goal at bristol city last week possibly. He occasionally makes a mess of covering his near post but has more than made up for a few errors in the last couple of seasons. Great pro, great bloke, but if we went up and Leicester didn't I would love to see Schmiechel here. I know people think he's overrated but some of the saves I've seen him make in this division are out of this world. His personality, on the other hand, might not be quite what we are after - a lot of posing and screaming at his defence, a bit like his dad, but he does the job. Mowgli Posted 8 December, 2011 Share Posted 8 December, 2011 Bialkowski hasn't, has he? What might have misled you (and definately me) was that he got that horrendous injury against Newcastle United. But hat was a cup tie. Still - he was having a cracking spell around that time and against Newcastle showed that he is more than capable of delivering in the Premiership

But hat was a cup tie. Still - he was having a cracking spell around that time and against Newcastle showed that he is more than capable of delivering in the Premiership So a reserve keeper who is manifestly not considered good enough to displace Kelvin in the Football League, must despite that somehow be good enough to play in the Premier League ? I admire the optimism and it would be great if Bart did turn out to be a outstanding success at the highest level, but lets face it, there is little or no actual evidence to support this view. It would be a matter of grave concern to this fan if we were to start a PL campaign with just our current goalkeeping line up - the need to dip into the transfer market would be unavoidable in my view. It should go without saying of course that we're not promoted just yet !
