The problem is...

We can quite easily bring in Maynard, Lucas, nippy winger & Clyne but it's the wage bill.I've noticed we operate at a percent of the income which means Dickson & Puncheon are the ones we need to get rid of in January to push on.I honestly believe we can walk this league if we go for it!

Doubt if Dickson and Puncheon actually cost us very much actually, not compared to the potential cost of Maynard anyway.

I don't doubt that we have some exceptionally highly paid players though, question is whether that cost is justified if you need to bring in yet more highly paid players to supplement them.

I dont think it matters if their highly paid or not. Just their the right players for us right now!!

You get what you DON'T pay for.

we obviously need to move some players on in January such as Holmes, Forte, Seabourne, Puncheon, Dickson or Harding, Jaidi, Connolly for example to free up some money on the wage bill

And we won't bring any players in until we get rid of the rubbish & the injury prone.

Do we? How have you noticed this? Have you seen accounts. QPR are currently paying Punch's wages, but we were clearly prepared to pay them before he paid for his loan, so don't see that this is correct. Apart for Puncheon and possibly (hopefully) Forte can't see us "moving anyone on" in January. If NA says we need 2 new players in Jan and we are still in the Top 10 (which we will be), then NC will sanction them based on the anticipated income that promotion will bring. 2 players wages would be small fry in comparison.

We will not move onmany if any of the players you mention. Jaidi and Connolly are on 1 year contracts, no benefit of movubg them on, in any case Jaidi is crook and DC has been excellent and I'm sure will be again soon. Seaborne is out long term, so no chance of moving him on, who would have him? Why anyone thinks NA would get shot of Harding is beyond me. Holmes is playing again, so that would only leave Forte, Punch and Dickson. I'm sure we will try to unload Puncheon but as he is not costing us much if anything at the moment don't see how that helps, and Forte must be on about £20 a week (if value for money is anything to go by). Doubt Dickson will go anywhere either. Why the obsession with the wage bill?

Why obsession with the wage bill?

It's because the club sets itself at 60% (example) on all the income that it makes and if it's bang on 60 now then something has to give.

We need to push on to the next level which Is the premiership which means those players listed above won't ever play there because they are not good enough.

I know that football clubs operate by the % of wages as I know a chairman of a local club who told me this, he even told me that Pompey used to operate at 120% at one stage, ha ha.

lots of assumptions about wage bill % etc, do we actually know.

NA and NC appear to me to operate in a way which causes minimum disruption on style and first 11, I expect to see only 1 or maybe 2 new players in Jan but would not be surprised if none of those mentioned previously come here.

I actually believe a striker is priority but would not be surprised to see a holding midfield player

Interesting attempt at an ITK input there Pilchards. Consept is right source for the idea is right, but bit short on where you get the percentage from.

IMHO the problem is simpler than that. We need to buy players - pretty clear.

We stand a damned good chance of going up this season IF we get the right players.

BUT to sign players we will need to offer 3 year contracts. Are we REALLY sure that those we have speculated about are capable of playing in the PL for the next 2.5 years?

All very well worrying about getting dead wood off our books NOW to get the wage bill balanced, BUT how many of the current squad would fit the deadwood label NEXT season? And THEN we add 2 or 3 more potentially to the list.

Tough call for the backroom staff to serve the answers on a plate to NA. None of our "targets" are proven in the PL or even at International Level.

This is as big a part of the problem, buy now to get out the league or hope that our "too good for L1 team" can do it on their own.

Right now it's pretty obvious we need cover for Chappers & Rickie.... But to buy PROVEN PL quality versions of them in January or cover?

Happy days then.

We've probably got a few out of contract at the end of the season, plus I'm sure 1 or 2 can be moved on. We might even find a team daft enough to actually buy Puncheon.

I'm not sure that we would walk the league because a number of clubs like Cardiff and Leicester are improving faster than we are. But I agree we have too large a wage bill spread over players who may not currently be of top CCC standard. Nigel has only used 20 players so far, which suggests this to be true.

We now have a very large number of players including youngsters under contract, and although a good number will not be on high wages, it all mounts up.

We should be sending more of the youngsters (and also fringe players like Dixon) out on loans to clubs in lower divisions to widen/improve their match experience, and with a view to selling asap, because our immediate aim imo should be to reduce the size of the squad so that we can afford the quality player or two that we must have if we are to progress.
