dune Posted 3 December, 2011 Share Posted 3 December, 2011 The pack is closing in. Fact is we're gonna have to sort out how we play away from home if we have any chance of a top 2 finnish, and sadly I can't see how we're gonna beat Pompey at their place. Fact is we're gonna have to sort out how we play away from home if we have any chance of a top 2 finnish, and sadly I can't see how we're gonna beat Pompey at their place. This is exactly it! We're having an amazing season, but our away form is pants!!! That's all people are trying to say. I still reckon we'll raise our game against the skates though, if we play anything like we can they won't be able to handle us.
saintmatt Posted 3 December, 2011 Author Share Posted 3 December, 2011 It's simple: before today our lead on 3rd was 8 points, now it's 7. Rather than dwell on the fact our lead has been cut (as some of the wrist-slitters seem to enjoy doing), let's acknowledge how well we've done to get to this position. Negativity breeds negativity, or is that concept too deep?

VectisSaint Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 I wonder if Man City have these negative supporters fretting that they are only 7 points above 3rd place (having played a game more). It really is quite ridiculous some of the reactions on here. Must admit I'm not actually too concerned with 3rd place, its the team in 4th that are more of a threat in my opinion. When are people going to start worrying that we won't even make the play-offs after all the gap is now only 12 points (other than Dalek of course). Saint_John Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 At the start of the season I was only expecting to be in the top 6 at this stage of the season. We have played above ourselves so far and to be top and 7 points (poss 5) clear of 3rd is a excellent effect from everyone (players, manager, fans, ceo etc). This league is very competitive and I thought at the start there were 15 sides who had a chance of promotion, so ALL SIDES are going to lose some games this season that they expect to win. I can remember last season when we went to walsall (0-1) and rochdale (0-2) we had problems breaking down teams that put up mass defensives and clogged up the central midfield area against us, it is the same this season. st.sj Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 You still don't make sense though!! I think he is trying to get perspective on our current position and quite right too. He is probably reacting to the slight air of discontent emitting in the main from this forum. Starting to hear on here and on the saints player commentary complaints and questions about Adkins. One person even saying yesterdays tactics/result prove Adkins will be no more than a lower league manager. I beg to differ. If before the season started I was told we were going to be top of the league above West Ham after 20 games I would have found it hard to believe. So I just want to put on record I think we have a great team in place, playing some of the best football I have seen us play for many a year and although it is inevitable we will lose games and even have off days, I am very impressed with the progress we have made in the last few years. [now waiting for the moronic happy clapper comments].
Lighthouse Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 It's not the league possition people are concerned about, it our relegation form away from home. 1 win in 7 I think now Donny - Lost Bristol - Lost Coventry - Won Reading - Drew Derby - Drew Cardiff - Lost Burnley - Drew Leicester - Lost This isn't a knee jerk reaction, we've been poor away from home since we beat Ipswich way back in August. S-Clarke Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 What position are we in? Oh yes we are top, aah now I see the problem. urrrrgh, no one is complaining about that! It's amazing. But the only reason we're top is because of our home form, if we step off it at home for a few games we'll fall down the league because our away form is relegation form. That's all it's about. Not hard to understand.

Not hard to understand. But by a parallel argument you could surmise that West Ham are only second because of their away form. It's a competitve league, most of the 24 teams in it have good players, some have really good players, in fact exceptional players, we stumbled across one of them yesterday afternoon. Lighthouse Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 You can dress it up however you like, our away form is dreadful and we need to improve it if we are serious about automatic promotion. Look how awesome we were at home last season and we still got pushed all the way by Huddersfield. If someone like Leeds, Cardiff or Boro turns it on in the second half of the season, even winning every home game (practically impossible) may not be enough. It's not doom and gloom at the moment. We're top of the league because of our home form and winning those first two away games at Ipswich and Barnsley. Our away form NEEDS to improve if we are to stay at the top. Not hard to understand. Am not looking for an arguement. Just think people should get in to perspective that as bad or as good as our away form is we are top. Am trusting Adkins to improve away form as I think he has probably also noticed that it could be better? I know its a weakness on my part but I just get irritated that some people on here just revel in the negatives when there is so much good about our current team. hypochondriac Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 Overall we have been brilliant. Our recent form however is a little concerning if we are looking to get promotion. Why should people be all happy clappy on here just to keep you happy? Top of the league and we play 1 up front. That is a pathetic tactic especially against a team that's bottom of the league. Adkins got what he deserved.

david in sweden Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 I think ...that the real problem is..we will try and play all this lovely, flowing SMS type passing game away from home..and it doesn't work. (someone is going to say that is because we don't have 20,000 fans cheering us on) but as far as I'm aware our away travelling fans often make more noise than the home crowd..don't they? Teams come to SMS prepared to put lots of bodies behind the ball and win a point . It's good to win, but getting ONE point away from home would be an improvement on recent away form - wouldn't it ? Lots of Prem. sides change their " away line-up" to withstand the home teams onslaught, can't we be a little more defence minded, and try and fix ONE point ? sotonian Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 hey people, enjoy where we are, most would of not expected us top at this stage at the start of the season, we are over achieving, people are starting to moan at the slightest slip, just get behind the team and enjoy it, if we finish in the top 6, it will be a great achievement to where we have come from in the last 3 years, COYR

Why some people have a problem on here with stating the obvious I have no idea. We seem to have run out of stream. We have not been playing well for weeks, and our last really good game was at home to Boro. We have managed to win the 2 home games some how, but we have not look good at all. Surely we cannot be out of stream already? When we drop points at home, I hope this does not deflate the team so that we lose a few games. Momentum is everything! Tartarus112 Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 Seems odd that people consider our away form 'relegation form' Drawing away is all you really need. And we ARE picking up wins. Coventry was only on the 5th of November. Too much panic over not beating teams in close matches. If we had won all these games with 'promotion form' (the opposite of relegation form) How ridiculously far ahead would we be? Not long ago we had a better start than Newcastle and QPR. No need to worry just trust Adkins to change the little things and change those 1-0 losses into victories. I also think we'll beat Pompey and Brighton on the basis that it means so much more to them and we always raise our game for high octane games such as the last pompey match at home where we stepped up massively despite the scoreline. This is what ive been saying all the time. We need to sort out a home team and tactics and an away team and tactics, both should be different or depending who we play. But atm we are playing the same tactics week in week out and teams have figured us out. Both Butterfield (against Boro) and Harding have done a great job when they have come in but to be dropped straight away when his main full back becomes fit. Playing three of our central midfielder's is not working either, it showed against Bristol it didnt work then he went on to play it again in the next 2 games, 1 we won after he took off one of them and the other we lost. I'm i upset that we're top? No but we could be top by a more comfortable margin than we are atm and by our away form we might not be top for the transfer window. Legod Third Coming Posted 4 December, 2011 Share Posted 4 December, 2011 If it is inevitable we will lose at home then why is it also inevitable that our away form will continue to be as bad?? This is one of the most ridiculous arguments I have ever heard - that basically losing (either away or at home) is inevitable but winning isn't. The longer we go on winning at home, the more likely we will continue to do so. Did Tiger Woods winning his first major make the second LESS likely???? If you've been watching results of those beneath us ..something like 9 teams have been in or around 5th / 6th place since September. Many of then would be glad to get a few points and move up into the top 6. I do think some of our fans are over-reacting a little. we are after all quite a few points ahead of the 3rd team. slickmick Posted 5 December, 2011 Share Posted 5 December, 2011 At the start of the season we were the underdogs in all our games and we got at teams/in their faces and wore them down. Now we are no longer the underdogs and teams are getting in our faces and thats the bit we're struggling with. I would have been happy with a top six place back then and still will be. Junior Mullet Posted 5 December, 2011 Share Posted 5 December, 2011 We're still on course to get an everage of 2 points a game - promotion form. Given our away form however i don't understand why NA doesnt change things and just attack the hell out of teams. I would rather go down fighting. I think our tight pitch at SMS helps us and large away pitches can be our downfall but we really should be doing better with the players we have.
