Celtic's Jos is Saints' Gain

But Chappers was playing for us on loan & he wasn't signed until the January window opened. :?

As Jos was signed on loan before the close of the transfer window the deal can be made permanent at any time, window or no window.Emergency loans are different ,you have to wait for the next window to open to make them permanent. Jos was signed on loan on the 31 st

August so the loan was always transformable at any time. Chaplow was a short term loan in September or October I think.

Can't remember the exact loans in question but there are different rules for short-term and season-long loans, and that wasn't the question anyway. I would think Hooiveld's deal won't become official until January 1st anyway, but as it's signed there's no reason not to announce it now. Might just be that Chaplow's deal wasn't concluded until the window opened.

These sound feasible, but Jordan Sibley says on twitter:

"For those asking, Jos' transfer done outside the window as he was brought in on an international loan, ie. we already hold his registration"

You think we need SIX centre halves? :|

looking forward to the end of the season..

Jaidi (now injured) will retire end of season.

Seaborne - still not back in the fold ..may never be ?

Martin - V.G. prospect but not played CC level regularly yet. May be good enough in a year ..or two.

Harlee Dean ..if youre counting him ?) only recently converted to CH for the U21 side, and hasn't even had a debut yet !

which leaves us with Fonte and Hooiveld as regulars ...can't really say we have six CH good enough for next season - can you ?

He said we had 5 good enough for this season, in response to the suggestion we need a new CB in January or something I lost the will to live just writing this sentence

Agreed! we probably do have 5 good enough for THIS season, but I'm sure he's written off at least two of those as far as Premiership candidates - or do you disagree? Injuries to key players always seem come at the most inconvenient times, and at a time when others are out of form / injured.

Of course we need more (and better alternatives) than we have now .. no disrespect to the current pairing !

I wouldn't fancy going into August next season with the same central defenders we have now - and facing up against Man.City in the first game.

Yes, if we get promoted we'll be looking to strengthen no doubt. Just can't see us signing a CB in January to compete with AM, RJ and DS for a spot on the bench.

Fantastic signing, a no brainer for me. As well as being terrific on the pitch, he looks like such a decent genuine lad and has struck up a really good rapport with everyone at the club.

I genuinely like the lad and I think him and Jose could be our partnership for a long time to come, they both compliment each others games very well. Best CB partnership we've had for a long long time.

One of my favourite moments from the exquisitely sweet Brighton game was of Jos helping one of the Brighton amateur dramatic troupe up off the ground with a big smile on his face. I hope the contrast to the diving, writhing and shirt pulling theatricals was noticed by the Brighton team and someone might have thought " mmm perhaps there is a better way to play this game" ... but I doubt it.

Well done Jos, good to have you on the bus with an extended season ticket

I have some messages to all the numpties who were going on about "couldn't get near Celtic's first team".

1) Trust in Nige. Chaplow couldn't get near the Preston team either.

2) WAAAAANNNNGEERS

Really pleased Jos is on the bus.

Chaplow was for very different reasons. He was top earner, did not get on with ferguson & they have financial issues. Not at all the same.

I was not sure when we signed him. I had never seen him play & the Celtic fans said he was rubbish. BUT - most of us said - wait & see. We did & he played really well for us. Utterly sensible IMHO!!!

Don't think that anyone knew much about Jos before we signed him. Wait and see was the appropriate response.

This really is a top bit of business. Let's face it, he has made that position his own and linked up brilliantly with Fonte. In Jan., we'll hopefully see the back of a couple of players that are not making the grade (e.g. Forte) - replacements I think should be a fast striker who can shoot from outside the area and a fast tricky winger who can play both sides but mainly provide cover/pressure for Lallana. Get those and we're looking very good for auto.

Should clarify the situation that has allowed us to sign him permanently outside the transfer window - international loans are a bit odd in that rather than the player being loaned in a conventional manner (i.e. the "parent" club keeps his registration), the player is technically transferred to the loaning club, with a binding agreement that he will return to the parent club at the end of the loan period. As a result, *technically* he was already our player and today's announcement is actually that he has agreed a new contract with the club.

Loopholes :adore:

Oh, and apparently the fee was £1.35m, which seems reasonable value.

£1.35m sounds about right. He's been so good for us it's hard to think why the Celtic fans thought he was pants. Perhaps it was the climate or the diet affecting his performance?

Lemon likes a different type of CB, one that is a little more hoof so to speak. Jos was brought by Mowbray who like us likes to pass the ball from the back, hence he wasn't used at Celtic.

Spoken to my contact at Celtic this evening, who first told me Jos was coming in and for which the majority on here were underwhelmed (what a difference now in a few short months), Said fee was set at £1.4million. Also said Lennon wished Jos all the luck in the world and wasn't to chuffed at him going as he was looking forward to getting him back in Jan. Lennon has a priority for 2 centre halves when window opens.

And what a credit to him. He came in with some terrible comments from Celtic but has more than proven his worth.

Very interesting comment from NA on his Donny build-up,talking about Jos and José he says that defending is now about interceptions rather than tackles because you don't want to give free-kicks away.Roughly what I was saying on some thread or other yestersterday in response to those who say we stand off of players and don't get stuck in enough.

Quite a few Celtic fans not happy with this as they rate Jos better than their current centre backs.

Fortunately for us..the Celtic Board didn't, though I can understand that Lennon and some of their fans weren't happy. Jos looked the right fit to me from day 1

A no-nonsense defender in the mould of Michael Svensson !
