Celtic's Jos is Saints' Gain

Jos has signed a three and a half year contract at St. Mary's, with the move completed outside of the transfer window as he is currently registered at the club, therefore eradicating any international clearance issues and giving the green light for the loan to be made permanent at this time.

Excellent news.

Does anyone know why he was already registered with us rather than Celtic?

Because he was playing for us, and you have to be registered with a club to play for them.

International clearance would have been given when he signed initially, rather than us having to wait for it now.

(Copied form other thread as this one's winning!)

Really pleased with that. I'll admit I was somewhat underwhelmed when it was announced he was coming on loan - looked like a last minute rather desperate move - but I'm very happy to say I've been proved wrong. Think the partnership with Jose is really strong and you can see how much he's taken to the club. Wonder if he knew this was happening when he did his personal lap at the end of the game on Tuesday?

Welcome aboard the bus. Good to have you in the building!

btw think we still need a loan cover at CB in Jan with MS and RJ out.

You think we need SIX centre halves? :|

*I* think we need at least 3 experienced competent players, if not 4, in that position with the potential to perform in the Premier League.

So currently we have Fonte (looks ok in the Championship but nothing like as dominant as in L1), Hooiveld (looks better than Fonte at the mo but unproven in English top flight and with a smidge of CL experience), Martin (backup at the moment), Seaborne (who knows?) and Jaidi (no contract after June, getting on and hasn't played this season).

I'd definitely want us to sign another CB, midfielder (centre or right), CF in January.

If we get up, maybe a keeper, right back, midfielder and another striker in the summer.

All of whom should be better than what we've got, if we're serious about getting up and not coming straight back down. We might be lucky and find that we have kids with the ability to fill those roles, but if not we'll need to buy or improve what we've got in other ways.

This is a very good signing, nevertheless.

But Chappers was playing for us on loan & he wasn't signed until the January window opened. :?

Can't remember the exact loans in question but there are different rules for short-term and season-long loans, and that wasn't the question anyway. I would think Hooiveld's deal won't become official until January 1st anyway, but as it's signed there's no reason not to announce it now. Might just be that Chaplow's deal wasn't concluded until the window opened.

As Jos was signed on loan before the close of the transfer window the deal can be made permanent at any time, window or no window.Emergency loans are different ,you have to wait for the next window to open to make them permanent. Jos was signed on loan on the 31 st

August so the loan was always transformable at any time. Chaplow was a short term loan in September or October I think.

celtic seem to be glad to see the back of him.... even a mention on the last page at how poor the championship must be if he cant make it "at a club like celtic".

are they having a laugh?

Probably nothing to do with the ability of the player, more a problem of Celtic and their tea-boy manager.

He might well understand Scottish football but the few minutes european action that I've seen of them tells me that there Lennon is completely out of his depth. He's a dinosaur so they play prehistoric football.

Let's face it, Jaidi is to all inents & purposes done; and who knows what Seaborne will be when he comes back from his head injury?

The only real cover we have at CB right now is Martin, who is still pretty much untried. I agree that another CB is still highly desirable.
