supersonic Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 No. He wouldn't go anyway, nor would the don let him. Pointless thread clogging up my Saints thread. Stick it in the "oh well nobody really cares forum" merry christmas

CB Fry Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 Sunderland won't be interested in Adkins, not enough glamour and no history with the club or the area. And Cortese and Adkins would collectively say no. Adkins is not going to be agitating for a move to the Stadium of Light. Bigger fanbase, but in reality no more chance of winning something, or getting into Europe, than staying at Saints (as long as we go up this season of course). Adkins really won't interest anyone until we get promoted, and then he's going to have to get us top ten for any club of any significant size - your Villa, Newcastle or Everton - to take any interest. And even then he probably wouldn't want to go if he's top ten with us.
Tommy Mulgrew Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 Agree with CBF. MON and Mark Hughes are far more likely to interest Sunderland.
dune Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 Wow that's a shock. As for Adkins going there it would be a step down. We are the bigger job with our mega wealthy owners.
Matthew Le God Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 Could Adkins be a target for them! Hope not! What can Sunderland offer Adkins that he can't do at Saints in the next few years?
aintforever Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 I wouldn't be surprised if they were interested, anyone with half a brain can see that Adkins is a quality manager. I doubt they could tempt him to jump ship though, Adkins seems quite a loyal bloke and they are not much bigger than us.

Crazy Diamond Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 I wouldn't rule out the possibility of them making a move for him. How can you? Look at what Nigel has achieved and look what he can achieve with all his potential, and the potential here. It's unlikely but not impossible. I would, Sunderland are in the crapper, they need someone with experience of the top flight because they don't have time for any initiation period.Hughes,Benitez or even Southgate. James Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 Looking at the early odds there are some big big name managers on there. Not sure I'd want many of them here over Adkins - but their fans who think they have a god given right to success will demand someone of O'Neil's stature. For this reason I can't see them coming in for Nigel.
Dalek2003 Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 They will probably turn down the Spanish world cup winning manager and go for someone from league 1, thus setting themselves up for a couple of seasons of relegation to League 1 and bankruptcy. The9 Posted 30 November, 2011 Share Posted 30 November, 2011 He was rumoured to be getting sacked on Saturday night, bookies stopped taking bets on it Sunday morning, then Gary Speed died and they left it until today to announce it. Mate (and former teammate) of mine is a Sunderland fan with a few connections and it was all over his Facebook on Sunday morning. It still has sod all to do with Saints though. david in sweden Posted 1 December, 2011 Share Posted 1 December, 2011 (edited) As a Saints fan in the early 1960's.. it seemed the Sunderland game was a highlight in the season in a division that lacked "big name clubs ", and as the years went by I found myself still looking at their results as they played "jack in the box" between the bottom of the (then Div.1) and the following season getting promoted back up - again. In January this year, I was pleased to see Steve Bruce (someone I admired as a manager though I disliked as a player for some reason) take them up to sixth place in the Prem. Then they sold Bent for a massive £24 million, and later lost Jordan Henderson to Liverpool and then were hit by an unbelievable run of injuries that saw NINE of their first team squad injured, SIX of whom had major operations, and they plummeted down the league. Having survived at the very end, they bought the talented Gyan for £13 million - only to see him loaned out for the season!. No wonder Steve Bruce's world had fallen apart. Sunderland fans were as impatient as you would expect and not very polite with their comments either. It takes real money to get a good Prem. side together, and a good manager to turn it into a successful team. I think they had the manager - but not the team, for which their Board must take a share of the responsibility - but no matter. Looks like Mark Hughes or Martin O'Neill might be coaxed back to try and bring some respectability back to the Stadium of Light. Steve Bruce, will in time, get another club managership and the only people to make a real profit from the whole mess will be - the agents!
