Teamtalk - Penders?

For some reason I have just reminded myself of the teamtalk Saints page and the "discussion" forum there. Did anybody here post on that back in the day (late 90s, early 00s). I think the admin for saints was a guy called Andy Penders? He would add a nugget of his own wisdom to your post if he felt fit. Does Andy (?) post on here now?? If you submitted a post it would often take a day or two to appear on the page so you couldn't really get a discussion going but it was better than nothing.

Oh yeah mate - I remember those days. I was on there way back then too. Can't believe that was the late 90's.

If I recall, Andy Penders was the chap on the line doing the news pieces when you phoned up. If memory serves, he left there to move to Australia at some point.

Remember there being a guy called Brian O'Halloran from Ireland posting on there too. Wonder what happened to him?

Hey. Yes I am in Singapore now. Been here for 12 years and working for ESPN.

Following the Saints via Saints Player and radio! But still getting a mention of the team on most shows I do! Did a piece on World of Football about Tadanari Lee. Nice.

Could you stop doing pieces on him and take the quick flight accross and help him pack his bags, if it takes much longer I'll start to think he's not real.

HaHa yes, been around Asia since 99 and did chuckle every time you mentioned Saints.

I was working in Dublin and a rocked up for the office 5 a side and much to my astonishment, amongst all the Man Utd, Liverpool, Celtic and Gaelic football jerseys, was another Saints shirt - Brian O'Halloran. He picked his English team in the early 80s and it happened to be us. Fair play, he's stuck with it. Comes over once a year to SMS, still in touch with him now.

Small world! (And you're right - Fair play to him for sticking with us)

I can just remember them days. I was plain old Dalek in those days. I becam Dalek 2003 after one of the many re-incarnations.

I only really stepped up my postings after the debacle surrounding the non appointment of Hoddle in 2004. Still mad about it today, if the mouthy few had kept their mouths shut we would have been in our 33rd year of unbroken top league football i am sure.

That is a good story, just read it again. I have to say, one of the nice things about League 1 was meeting fans who stuck with their teams through thick and thin, mostly thin. It would be so easy to be a glory hunter. i have a great deal of respect for them and often they are very knowledgeable.

The is true. Used to infuriate me when Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool fans used to think you didn't know what you are talking about because you support a League 1 teah. Give me a chat with a Carlisle or Huddersfield fan any day!

Well, I used to be a normal poster until that moment. I suppose the whole debacle shook me. can't believe how casually our club was ruined just to satisfy the ego of a myopic few. Worst part about it, is they will never admit their part in the clubs downfall and probably are the same fans slagging off players at SMS.

I hate that I'm posting about this to you again, but I was also one of those 'minority' who didn't want Hoddle back. There were other option available. But yes, I guess it my fault we were relegated to league 1.

So Hoddle was the only manager that could have saved us then? Whats he doing now? maybe he can save is from our slide to 17th.

You and the other small but vocal minority should take part of the blame because you put your own misguided feelings before the club. Hoddle, I am sure, would not have got us relegated at the very least. The sudden decision not to appoint Hoddle led to a chain of poor decisions and it started with the appointment of Sturrock.

Any idea how long you are going to continue to trot out this tedious response to just about anything. It didn't happen, get over it. Hoddle may or may not have saved us, there is nothing that can be done to prove one way or another, but the reality of Glenda is that without Gorman he is not the messiah you and others seem to believe. Look at it another way, if Glenda had saved us we would probably still be under the stewardship of Lowe, Hoddle would have left soon after when a better offer came along and we would now probably be in lower Championship level (17th maybe) without much hope of investment or promotion. I know where I would rather we were, top of the League (or at least in the Top 2) with NC and the legacy of Markus Liebherr, rather than the legacy of Lowe.

I also think Sturrock would have kept us up. It was the appointment of Wigley that put us down that season. So either way, Sturrock or Hoddle, we'd have been safe. How about blaming Lowes decisions?

If it really had only been a minority of fans who didnt want Hoddle back then he certainly would have come back. Every Saints fan I know bar one was dead against him returning, and even the one in favour of it thought that the additional pressure on him because of the nature of his previous departure probably made it a bad idea.

Sturrock had lost the dressing room. He would have soon been in trouble. His sacking was justified, what happened next was bizzare. There are a lot of unanswered questions about this period in our clubs history.

This was a period even more traumatic than the later "appointments". In retrospect, losing Strachan (despite his shortcomings) was disaster.

I believe that Sturrock had indeed lost it (for a number of reasons previously discussed) but forcing Wigley to take over was even worse.

There had to be some sort of continuity, and the arrival of Sturrock saw the departure of a number of "behind the scenes " faces and Steve Wigley..(IMO a good coach in his own right who had the respect of the clubs junior players ) - was suddenly asked to become manager to an already struggling and dis-oriented side.

What did we expect? .. even very experienced managers don't always turn things around so suddenly.
