Anyone else not that bothered about West Ham?

At the start of the season the Hammers were always my favourites to win the league. They forked out big wages for players like Nolan and Bentley, not to mention keeping players like Cole, Carew, Green, Diop, Faye and Taylor. They've got Big Sam in, who is a very good appointment for this level, regardless of how ugly he plays.

Personally I dont' really care if they win the league. It's the gap to 3rd I'll be looking at and if the Hammers beat teams like Boro, Leeds and Cardiff then great IMO. I'd like to win the league and I will be happy when bottom half teams beat them, but other than that I'm not too bothered.

I came to this same conclusion, stuck in traffic on the way to the game last night. I would like West Ham to beat the likes of Middlesborough, Leicester, Cardiff etc,etc but lose to those clubs not likely to be in the race. That lessens our chances of winning the title perhaps but increases our chances of getting promotion by widening the gap to third.

Leicester is the one team I worry about as they have the resources and now have a good manager to organise them. I only wish they had kept hold of Sven a little longer......

All that said I hate the way West Ham now play and thank god we don't play that way.

Why worry about Leicester, they've spent a lot of money but they just aren't all that good.

If they're lucky they'll get 3rd or 4th and be favourites to win their first round play-off game but at 13 points behind us after only 19 games for automatic promotion they are toast.

Actually I'd like saints to win stuff, I hated coming second last season. The point of football is to win stuff like cups and league titles. Considering that if we do go up we've haven't a cat in hells chance of winning anything ( we will ditch the cups with second string teams becuase PL status is more important) I 'd like us to try and go up as champions who knows when we will be in this postion again?

Apart from being on the honour roll what do you gain by winning the Championship that you don't from being second??

Is there any monetary prize?

There is but it is peanuts compared to the sky TV money in the Premier League.

I would like Saints to have the honour of first place but feel West Ham are brutally dispatching the opposition to gain an auto spot. Their players would be otherwise competing in the premier league if it wasn't for the bongo brothers money.

Winning the league instead of coming second not only says you are the best team in the Championship, but also that you have more chance of staying in the premiership and not getting relegated in the first season back. That, more than for any other reason is why I'd like to win it.

That's just a statistic really. Generally the team that wins the league is better and has a better chance of staying up, but that's often not the case. Just look at Saints and Brighton's form this season.

You don't care? It is obviously most imprtant to jut finish in the top 2, but I can't see why anyone can say they don't care. Bet it means plenty to those at the club, actually winning some silverware and going up at Champions.

Absolutely, 100% agreed. We can talk about "there's not much monetary difference between coming first and second" - but it's this kind of statement that has been ruining football. Money talks, why we have such an ugly game these days.

Not bothered about WHU. We will finish above them as champions. We are top on merit, we are the best team in the Championship, we have beaten WHU once and will do so again in February. Just 48 points from 27 games will give us automatic promotion, as we are currently averaging 2.21 points per game we'll probabaly end up with 101 points. No worries, the future is bright the future is red n white!!!

I would love to see Saints win the league if not I would prefer to win the playoff's than come 2nd to be honest I am not at all bothered about the prem I know we have to get there for the club to continue to move on.

Don't get me wrong if we get promoted I will celerbrate till I get giddy it will be a magnificent achievement to get back to back promotions but to me it is not all about getting to the prem I would much rather see us win stuff playing good football with players that have a connection & feel for the club.

If we do go up I really don't want us to be forking out for imports & big time Charlies looking for big bucks I like the squad we have I would like to see some decent signings but I still want us to be a Saints side not mega bucks fc like City

I care. Love us to win it!

Who remembers 2nd.

Didn't we get promoted in '78 after finishing 2nd? I don't remember too many people at the cup final in '03 saying, "yeah, but we finished 2nd to Bolton". Come Autumn the difference between 1st and 2nd really is immaterial. There aren't many people raving about Brighton these days and they beat us last year.

To me winning the league is the icing on a promotion cake, but it's still a nice cake without the icing and way better than a mouldy prawn sandwich.

I actually think having WHU breathing down our necks is a positive as it should spur both teams on and hopefully keep the chasing pack at bay.

Anyone who says they aren't bothered about winning the league is kidding themselves, I'd absolutely love to win the league but of course top 2 is the priority.

I am kind of hoping WHU will be this years Huddersfield - push us all the way - we handled that pressure last season, do it again this and we will be champions playing our style of passing football - for me that is really important, that we do it entertaining and less Big Sam old school hoof and muscle (it may be effective, but could not take any real pride in that or the way they are 'managing a huge debt burden' to ty and go straight back up). It will be far tougher in this league, but as Nige says, together as one and as long as we recognise the value in the way we play, sometime being more important than the result, we stay as one.

West Ham will go up.. our job is to go up as well and if we handle the pressure, it will be above them. Bring it on

I would be happy to WIN promotion. Of course it is nice to win the league and it may even enable to clinch promotion with a few games to spare but, at the end of the day, nobody really remembers how teams got there, just that they are there.

We are way beyond anything that was predicted by even the most optimistic at the start of the season. I don't think my heart could cope with the play offs but 2nd place will do me.

Brighton trotted out this argument at the end of last season but, let's be honest, who remembers 1st if it's in the second division? We'll have still been out performed by the likes of Wigan/Bolton/Swansea/Norwich/QPR. Don't get me wrong, supporting Saints is outstanding at the moment and going up as champions would be huge achievement, but only slightly huger than going up 2nd; we'll have finished 22nd as opposed to 21st in the football league pyramid.

On an aside, anyone else wondering how West Ham are financing their promotion push? Remember Gold/Sullivan last season saying relegation from the Prem would be "armageddon" for them..

My thoughts exactly. Competing with West Ham for top spot is a great focus that ultimately will help us secure a top 2 finish.

if SFC are serious about making promotion as certain as it can be, the club must aim for top spot so that 2nd is there as a buffer. The way to do this is to strengthen the team in January with at least two players who would be first choice selections and would be Prem players for next year. Take on WHU at their own game and bring in big guns.
