Crouchie's Lawyer Posted 30 October, 2008 Share Posted 30 October, 2008 Adventurer Ben Fogle is being treated for a potentially fatal flesh-eating bug he picked up on a TV shoot. The star, 34, has a hole about an inch wide on his right arm after a sore broke out following his return from the jungles of Peru. He now faces a month of treatment to stop the infection, which is believed to be Leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is transmitted through the bite of a sand fly insect and the disease can kill if left untreated. Doctors are testing some skin taken from the arm of the TV presenter, with the results in the next few days expected to confirm the presence of the bug. Fogle would then have to have daily treatment where a compound is put into his bloodstream through a drip. The substance kills off the parasite but can make the patient poorly. The sore appeared in the wake of a mystery illness that left him bedridden for three weeks after returning from South America, where he was filming a new adventure series Extreme Dreams. His spokeswoman said he was still planning to take part in the inaugural South Pole Race in December with Olympic gold medal-winning rower James Cracknell. The 370-mile race follows in the footsteps of Roald Amundsen and Captain Robert Scott and will see entrants pull sledges across the ice and snow to beat teams from across the world to the South Pole. Fogle sprang to fame in 2000 after taking part in the BBC's reality show Castaway. He has also appeared in other shows like Countryfile, Crufts and Cash In The Attic. He lives in London with his wife Marina. Think I can safely cross Peru off of the list of countries to go to!
JohnnyFartPants Posted 30 October, 2008 Share Posted 30 October, 2008 I was once in a specialist rehab place for knackered old gits mainly. I had my ankles rebuilt and strengthened but some bloke came in with Ben's problem in his leg. He had a massive part of skin and muscle carved out of his leg and was getting what was left made to work again. His flesh looked like a plucked raw turkey and it made his leg a well weird shape. Crouchie's Lawyer Posted 30 October, 2008 Author Share Posted 30 October, 2008 Its things like that and the spider one, where (correct me if im wrong) but a spider bites a fly and lays its eggs inside said fly. The fly then incubates the spider eggs and when they are nearly ready bites something else (normally a large animal, but it has been known to be a human). The eggs are transferred to the bite and the spiders start to grow in you. The next thing you know is a lump appearing on your body which bursts and releases loads of little spiders. Again, this maybe an urban myth, but im pretty sure I have heard its true
