Whats happened to Lambert's free kicks?

First season Lambert was here it seemed that a free kick anywhere near the opposition area was pretty much an odds on goal ... his free kicks were a joy to watch. Tonight watching him smash another one straight into the wall I can't even remember the last time I've seen him put a free kick away.

Now don't get me wrong Lambert is a hell of a player but I can't help wondering why his free kicks don't seem to work on a regular basis anymore.... Maybe it's time to let somebody else have ago not sure who though.

The free kick was too close- on the edge of the area almost- not enough space to get it over wall at the speed he hits the ball

Well Rickie must have felt he had a chance or he wouldn't have tried it. It's not really just about tonights free kick though his free kicks have been going down hill for the last two seasons that first season in league one he seemed to bang free kicks in from all over the place.

Don't forget that we do often actually score from Rickie's free kicks. Just that lately the goals have come from 'trick plays' so to speak. Crosses beyond the far post and headed back across to be slammed home etc.

Exactly that. He probably only strikes half of them at the moment so a lot less opportunities to score directly. A lot of teams wised up to his dead ball ability and changed their defensive positioning to suit. That's why we've been able to exploit the space that gives so many times. Clever stuff as it gives us allows us more options and a greater chance of making the free kick count.

I didn't think the Hull wall was far back enough either.

League One goalkeepers aren't as good.

Also, we have decided against "just shooting" most of the time recently, so guessing he may have been working on passing moves rather than shooting.

The other thing is subtle changes in your body over time mean that doing the same thing you always did produces slightly different results.

When Ricky first came to the club, he would successfully smash free kicks. I have not seen him successfully take this approach for a long while. Now he wraps his foot more round the ball to get the spin, whereas previously he would also use a Ronaldo type technique of a straight blast that could get up and down over the wall. When Lambert lost his form, he also lost his ability of getting the ball up and down with that straight smash. I have never been able to figure out why and put this down to physical problems or injuries that has resulted in this not being possible anymore. When Ricky regained his form, he has not been able to successfully use that straight smash again.

You are not imagining this as others are trying to imply, there has been a definite change from his first season for what ever reason. I don't believe you can suddenly forget how, so I would guess it's deliberate to protect or reaction from some part of his body.

  • 2 weeks later...

I read in todays matchday programme interview with Rickie that he hardly ever practices free kicks anymore as trainning is dedicated to passing the ball and free kicks aren't part of trainning. Apparently he is not happy at how many goals he is scoring from free kicks. Might be worth letting him practice a few free kicks Nige....

Didn't MLT stay behind after traning to practice his free kicks? Nothing stopping RL doing that.
