Darren Clarke

Alastair Cook

Luke Donald

Mo Farah

I'd go for Cavandish or McIlroy I think. Even though I know next to nothing about cycling. Or golf.

Cavendish is the clear standout performer, it would be about fecking time for him too; however the problem is that the majority of pleboid voters in this country have no actual proper clue about sport and generally follow the press like the degenerate sheep that they mimic; so it'll probably be one of the two golfers.

Darren Clarke.

Showed that the beer swilling masses can still have their moments in the spotlight. His entire story, loss of his wife etc make him the stand out "Personality".

Doesn't mean he is the outstanding Sportsperson, for consistency you have to look to Cavendish and of course Luke Donald who by Sunday evening could become the first person to win BOTH US & European Tour order of merit.

Luke has kept grinding out solid consistent performances all year, Darren & Rory just had one magical weekend each, but the emotion of that win and the way he battled the elements....

But Darren is a true Gent - hell, he chatted my GF up then apologised and bought me a beer two years ago so would love to see him win.

The Manx Missile for me. First Brit to win the World Road Race Championship since Tommy Simpson in the 60's. The first Brit to win the points classification at the TdF. Another 5 stage wins at this year's TdF. The first Brit to win a TdF jersey since Robert Millar in 1984. His youthful arrogance seems to be mellowing. He is always quick to praise the contribution of the team to his successes HTC/British WC team etc. His achievements to date are up right up there.

If Cavendish doesn't win this year it will be the biggest travesty since, well since he didn't win last year.

The bloke is by far the best sportsman in the country. If he was French, Belgian, Italian or Spanish he'd be a God. To give it to Darren Clarke because he played well for 4 days and won one thing would be a joke. Cavendish has been consistently trouncing every cyclist on the flat for years and is World Champion. Give it a few years and he'll be the best sprinter of all time.

Also anyone saying Darren Clarke wins on personality can't have heard Cavendish interviewed or been following him on twitter.

Totally agree with that but it's the Beeb, as an eg Zara Philips ahead of the likes of Ricky Hatton in his prime? The list is endless.

Thing is even my Mum (86) votes for this each year.

Anyway, I'll be on the case next week, see if I can pull a funneh on this subject

Chris Boardman did indeed wear the yellow jersey on a number of occasions 1994, 97 and 98. This was as a result of success in the prologue TT (he crashed out in 95). Boardman on his Lotus bike was a phenomenal rider. In 1994 his speed over the 7.2 km prologue course in Lille was in excess of 55kph, a record that still stands. Later in the team TT on Stage 3 he was simply too quick for the rest of his GAN team and it was this that saw him out of yellow. However, Cav was in green in Paris at the end of the TdF as was Millar in the polka dot.

Who would you nominate in his place? Not suggesting he will win it or deserves to win it but he is a pretty good tennis player and I'm sure you wouldn't mind being in his shoes given his titles and assets.

Rebecca Adlington? Jessica Ennis? People who've won stuff?

How many people actually know enough about ALL the sports represented (and the ones on the periphery) to make a meaningful judgement? And even then, it depends on your interpretation of what makes a deserving 'Sports Personality'.

IMO, the programme itself is often an interesting review of the British sporting year and celebrates our achievements. That in itself is good enough for me, who wins is a secondary element IMO.

She didn't win - not this year anyway.

Murray won several tournaments this year - ATP 1000's.

These are not junior events.

You're quite right on both points. But in answer the the question I was (falteringly) answering, Rebecca Adlington is demonstrably the best at what she does and has the medals to prove it, whereas Andy Murray, good player though he must be, is not.

TBH I'd love to see Alastair Cook win it as he's both excellent and completely devoid of personality.

Possibly true but since we've been restricted to a shortlist of who we can choose to vote for I've lost interest. I realise why that is and the reason for it but it also plays into the hands of populist sports. To be honest I'd probably vote if I had a genuine choice but I don't, and frankly the last ten years or so the programme hasn't even been that good so I doubt I'll bother watching.

OK a final input.

Rory - OK he has Dengue Fever, but he was still a grumpy sod ALL week, him & his (blonde - I mean REALLY blonde) marketing man's dream came grumbled and went.

Luke Donald - had to only beat Rory to become a golfing legend, not only did that but gave it a damned good shot at actually winning the tournament

Then afterwards? Took the time between the press conferences to find anyone who worked with him this week, shake their hand (ain't gonna wash it for a month) and then didn't JUST go, he went to the bar and no, didn't just get some beers in but went and said - as much Moet as they want - they deserved it.

What an Outstanding Gentleman.

And I may hate him in the morning 8)

Think Donald has probably wrapped this up after this week. World No1 and first golfer to finish top of the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic. Didn't win a major like McIlroy and Clarke but won just about everything else.

Looking forward to seeing the media get all excited about Luke Donald's achievements. The same media which questioned the validity of Dinara Safina being World number 1 in women's tennis because she hadn't won a grand slam event.

Startling similar scenarios if you ask me.

It should go to either Clarke, McIlroy or Donald.

Clarke signed my programme after his first round at the Open so i'll go for him.

I would like to point out that I am in no way biased towards golfers.

Cavendish is an excellent sportsman and if there's any justice in the world he will come a credible fourth.

British public in choosing the right winner for once shock.

The programme really is a complete pile of arse now though. The BBC wasted far too much time wasted banging on about the phone numbers and shoving their collective penis up Redgrave's arse again.
